Is building a lightweight observability platform a good portfolio project?

Hey everyone,

I'm a [B.Tech](http://B.Tech) Third Year CS student currently preparing for internships and freelance work. I have mostly built full-stack SaaS projects so far.

My current projects include:

* FinSight AI — finance management platform with analytics + AI features * BrainLoop — AI-based personalized learning assistant * DayFrame — productivity/journaling SaaS

My stack is mainly Next.js, React, TypeScript, Node.js, Express, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Prisma, etc.

I feel like my projects show frontend/full-stack skills, but most of them are still around dashboards, CRUD, and API integrations. For my next major project, I want to build something that shows stronger backend/system design skills instead of another AI app.

I'm thinking about building a lightweight observability platform (inspired by Sentry/Datadog).

The idea is:

* developers integrate a small SDK into their app * the SDK captures errors, API performance, and events * backend processes this data * dashboard shows errors, latency, logs, and application health

Not trying to recreate Datadog, but more like a smaller developer tool to learn things like SDK design, event processing, queues, real-time updates, and backend architecture.

Do you think this is a good direction for a portfolio project, or am I overengineering? Would recruiters/internship reviewers value this type of project, or would a more traditional full-stack app be better?

Would love opinions from people who have built/hired for backend-heavy roles.

Should I learn UI/UX design as a frontend/full-stack developer? Where do I start?

Hey everyone,

I’m a frontend/full-stack developer and I’ve been thinking about improving my UI/UX design skills.

I already know the frontend side of web development (React, Next.js, Tailwind, etc.) and have built several full-stack applications. Currently, I’m learning backend development and planning my next project.

One thing I’ve noticed while building projects is that I can implement designs, but I don’t always have the instinct to create good designs from scratch. I can make something functional, but I struggle with questions like:

- Why does this layout feel better than another one?

- How do I decide spacing, typography, colors, hierarchy, and component structure?

- How do professional designers think about user flows and interactions?

- How do I avoid building something that looks like a developer-made UI?

So I’m wondering:

  1. Is learning UI/UX design actually worth the time for someone who is already a developer?

  2. Should I aim to become good at design, or just learn enough principles to make better products?

  3. What concepts should I focus on first?

  4. Are there any good resources, courses, books, or YouTube channels you would recommend for developing a design instinct?

I’m not looking to become a professional UI designer. My goal is to become a better product-focused engineer who can independently design and build polished applications.

Would love to hear advice from developers/designers who went through a similar journey.

Resource guidance for ML and LLM foundations

Hey everyone,

I'm a complete beginner in the field of machine learning and LLMs and desire to learn the foundations first, coming from the web dev field. Took up a NPTEL course for the same, but lectures here are just too boring and slow to learn from, can anybody share some good resources to learn this stuff. Any help would be genuinely appreciated :)

3rd year starts in 10 days, still can't decide job vs higher studies

3rd year starts in like 10 days and I still haven't figured out if I should be gunning for a job or higher studies after grad. Doing IT at GGSIPU (not IIT/NIT, just a regular college), currently applying to companies for MERN stack internships, plan this year is DSA all-in for placements, dev keeps running alongside that. But I've also got this AI/ML itch I keep pushing to "later, once dev calm down."

Thing is I don't actually know if that's fine or if I'm quietly missing a window. If GATE/MTech is a real option, does starting AI/ML "later" already put me behind for the next cycle? If MS abroad is more the move, I keep hearing GRE and research exposure need to start way earlier than I'm planning.

Anyone from a similar non-IIT background who went MTech, MS abroad, or straight to job — what do you wish you'd started in 3rd year? Not looking for "depends on your profile," want someone to tell me straight if my current plan is workable or if I'm about to waste the year not deciding.

PS: I'm really interested and fascinated with the AI and Ml field, and have this curiosity to get into it atleast once, i feel like i'm really lost, help me 😭

Looking for a DSA accountability partner — let's restart/resume our grind together

Hey everyone,

I'm a CS student who keeps starting DSA prep strong and then falling off whenever life (college, work, internships, family stuff) gets busy. I don't think I'm alone in this lol.

This time I want to try something different: find one person at a similar stage to be my daily accountability partner. Here's how I'm thinking it works:

  • Every morning (or night before), we each set a small, specific daily target — like "2 array problems" or "finish DP intro topic"
  • We tell each other what we're committing to
  • At the end of the day, we check in with what we actually did (no judgment if you miss a day, just be honest about it)
  • Just one-on-one, low pressure, no big group/server drama — just two people trying to stay consistent

About me: currently going through Striver's A-Z DSA sheet in C++, comfortable with basics, trying to get more consistent before internship season ramps up.

If you're at a similar point (or even a bit ahead/behind — doesn't need to be exact) and want a partner who'll actually text you "did you do your 2 problems today?", drop a comment or DM me. Would love to pair up with someone serious about this, even if it's just for a few weeks to build the habit back.

Let's actually finish what we start this time 🙂

How do I balance being my recovering mother's full-time house caretaker with 6-7 hrs of daily studying I can't afford to lose?

II'm pursuing my B.Tech in Computer Science and about to enter my 3rd year. At this stage, I need to dedicate at least 6-7 hours of focused studying every day to stay on track.

A little background on my family: we're a nuclear family of four — a fairly understanding mother, a conservative father, and a hell of an irritating, stubborn younger brother who wants to be treated like a prince in everything and refuses to cooperate or help with anything.

My mother had major surgery earlier this week and came back from the hospital 2 days ago. Since then, my literal nightmare has started.

Ever since she came home, my whole day goes into managing and taking care of everything at home — from looking after the maid, to meals, to basically the entire responsibility of running the house. I'm starting to lose myself. I barely get time for myself, let alone time to study, and that's the thing eating at me the most.

Everyone at home just says I'm "angry," "crying," or "khadus" — but what they don't understand is how I'm actually feeling on the inside.

It's 1am right now, the only time I'm not being kept on my toes for something. But today my body and mind just gave out, and I've been lying in bed crying for the last hour instead of studying. I feel so guilty for not studying.

I genuinely don't know how to balance all of this anymore. I've been running on 4-5 hours of sleep all week, my body's been exhausted and sleepy all day, and I've had constant crying urges and headaches.

I know maybe no one's even going to read this, but if you do — please, any advice? I will not leave my studies no matter what. It's my only way out of this house after college, and I don't want to break the rhythm I've built with so much effort.

Looking for teammates to participate in hackathons

I'm from BPIT Delhi, looking for genuine and interested people who equally wanna participate in hackathons alongside me or the projects we build, consider the project as your own personal project instead of someone joining in a project.

About me:

I went solo in my first hackathon ever literally, due lack of availability of teammates, sometimes tech stacks didnt match or the timing didnt.

My stack:

Languages: TypeScript, JavaScript, C++

Frontend: React.js, Next.js 16 (App Router), Tailwind CSS, Shadcn/ui, Radix UI, Framer Motion, Recharts, Chart.js, Zustand

Backend: Next.js Server Actions, REST APIs, Zod, React Hook Form, Axios, Clerk, Svix

AI & APIs: Google Gemini API, LLM Integration, REST/JSON APIs, Async Data Fetching

Databases: PostgreSQL (Prisma ORM, Neon), MongoDB (Mongoose)

Github: https://github.com/mahimagupta-droid

If you're someone who resonates with me and with I'm trying to do, I would love to connect and participate in multiple hackathons together... would live to talk if youre interested
