Status of East US 3?

Has anyone heard where Microsoft is in terms of launching East US 3 (Atlanta)?

They announced/started construction in 2021 and I get that was kind of in the depths of COVID but we're going on 6 years now

Anyone have an idea when this will be available, and what its paired region might be? We're in Atlanta, will be leveraging Express Routes, and about to start building out basically from scratch and it'd be really great to know when this is dropping but it's been silence it seems since the initial announcement

Service availability issue

Is it possible to have the Spectrum team investigate availability for a small handful of addresses? My parents live in a newly built-out RDOF area and they have a spectrum line running right by their house, with a terminal on the power pole, but their address shows as unavailable

I suspect it's because it's a dirt driveway off of the main street, but the addresses from the main street continue up the driveway

I know the website says they should call to have the address confirmed but they are not very tech savvy and if we can just get the address fixed, they can then call in and have an order placed. But I want to navigate this part of it for them

ESPN Unlimited + YouTube TV, what am I missing?

I feel like I'm losing my mind, and hopefully you guys can help. I'm trying to activate ESPN Unlimited with our YouTube TV account

I have gone in the YouTube (not YTTV) app and gone to settings and linked my ESPN account. In YTTV mobile app it shows ESPN is connected. In the ESPN app the ESPN channels are unlocked because I authenticated with YTTV, but strictly ESPN Unlimited content is still locked, and all ESPN content in the Disney+ app is still locked

The only thing I can think of is the fact that the email address on my Disney/ESPN account doesn't match the account for YTTV, and the YTTV login I'm attempting to use is a family shared account, but not the main one (we have this shared account so everyone in the house can login to YTTV) but I didn't see any fine print about family shared YTTV accounts aren't eligible for ESPN Unlimited

[OT, hopefully] UFC White House: UFC loses $30m staging Freedom 250 event at White House

Set aside the politics, exposure and media is great, but a massive financial hit to the series would be less than ideal right now

Best route to modernize plans? (Wireless + Fiber)

My wife has a fairly old AT&T account that is made up of our home fiber and her phone, her mom's phone, and her sister's phone.

Fiber is 1 gig with no promos, other than a bundle discount and autopay discount, billing at $60 a month

Their wireless plan is an old AT&T Unlimited Plus Multi-line plan. For 3 phones, it's $221 after taxes and fees

My mother in law has a device payment plan so we can't just start over with a fresh account here, but what is the best path to get the lowest fiber + wireless pricing? Currently new customers in our area are offered $20 for 1 gig fiber + whatever the regular rate is on wireless. By my math I think that is either $35 or $40 per phone (AT&T's site is a little confusing, says $40 before I put in an address but building a hypothetical bundle it's giving me $35)

The kicker is my year-long prepaid US Mobile service is up for renewal soon, AND I am due to get a new phone so I'd probably be looking to move my phone to AT&T

So, with three existing phones, and the prospect of adding a new line, what is the best way for us to approach AT&T? Should I go to the AT&T store and have them do it in person? Should I call retention? Will I need to threaten to cancel fiber to get the discount there?

Probably going to wait for the new iPhones in a month or two before pulling the trigger, unless the new line doesn't make any difference

[OT?] Penske Corp & Japanese investment house Mitsui offer to take Penske Automotive Group private

Penske Corp is the private company that owns Penske Entertainment (IMS/IndyCar) and Ilmor, and owns a 52% stake in the public company Penske Automotive Group. PAG is the company that owns the Penske car dealerships, truck rentals, etc

Penske Corp and a Japanese investment firm Mitsui (who owns a 20% stake in PAG) have offered $3.8 billion to buy the rest of PAG that they don't own and take it private

That's a LOT of money, there's no indication how much Penske vs. Mitsui is putting in to the deal

At a purely technical level this doesn't impact Indycar because Indycar is not part of PAG, but the amount of money RP is throwing around here is not insignificant.

Will be curious if this helps or hinders or has no effect on what he's willing to put back into Indycar, although I think at this point in his ownership he's probably invested all the "free" money he was planning and now runs it to turn a profit

New job with very generous 401k -- should I change what I'm doing for kid's 529?

I've got a 20 month old son that I opened a 529 for just before he was born. Since he wasn't born yet, it's still in my name with me as the beneficiary. I've been working to pay down some debt so I haven't put a ton of money into it, today it's got about $650 in it, and the plan was when the debt I'm working on gets retired here in the next 12 months or so to start putting more into it

But

I recently accepted a new job with a very generous 401(k) plan. My current job is a 25% match of the first 6%. The new job is a 75% match of the first 6% PLUS a deposit into my 401(k) of 11% of my salary. This 11% is not a match so I get it even if I don't defer any on my own

The one kicker is that this job is about a 6.5% decrease in my base salary (IE: ignoring the 401k deposit). But, between the health insurance being less than half and the 11% free 401k deposit it is still about a 10% overall bump.

Obviously, I will keep doing the 6% deferral. My question is now with this massive free 11% into my 401(k), and the decrease in my monthly salary, is it unreasonable to give up on the 529 and just pay my son's college, should he want to go, out of my 401k instead?

I'm 43, and his birthday falls where he's going to turn 6 like a month into Kindergarten, so I think I will hit 59 1/2 just about the time his first semester of college would be due

And if this makes sense can you rollover a 529 into an IRA? I have a Rollover IRA at Fidelity where former employer 401ks have been consolidated, and if I do this I don't want to have to keep up with this relatively small account

Corporate hiring process?

Can anyone provide some insight on the hiring process for a corporate (technology) position? I applied and in the application system my application went from received, to under review, to finally "Interview" but I haven't had a single contact from anyone

The job is no longer listed on the careers page so I assume they filled it, but curious if they pull listings down before making an offer, or even before starting interviews

[OT] Go-kart facility coming to Birmingham nextdoor to Barber Motorsports Park

https://www.cbs42.com/news/local/world-class-go-kart-facility-coming-to-birmingham/

Someone is building a go kart track next to Barber. Not entirely clear if the Barber organization is involved, but it looks like it's not necessarily a non-profit doing this. At any rate, this is good news for those who were concerned something might happen to Barber Motorsports Park after George Barber died. Doubt this would be going in if they planned to do anything other than what they're doing today at Barber

2026 Robin Miller Award?

Did they do the Robin Miller Award this year at the 500? I can find stories on racer.com for 2022-2025 but can't find any mention of it happening this year. Robin got the first one in 2019, and in 2020 it wasn't officially awarded although someone in the Mailbag suggested Donald Davidson and Robin said it was a good idea.

Did they forget about it again?

Now That's What I Call Activation: SiriusXM Turbo Driver's Seat - Felix Rosenqvist

I'm an old, so that means I have a SiriusXM subscription, and I also listen almost exclusively to Turbo, which is 90s/2000s metal/hard rock. They have a show they do I think weekly called "Driver's Seat" where they let listeners do about 30 minutes of playing songs on the air

Well, this week's host is none other than our boy Felix Rosenqvist

Can't say how cool it is for SiriusXM to do this, the branding lined up perfectly with the channel name and the show's name, and Felix actually knows what he's talking about, it's obvious this is not a put-up and these really are his songs

Partial tenant migration w/ ShareGate--Limiting access of the other side?

We're a M365 shop. We are divesting a small portion of our business to a third party, and the acquiring company is entitled by the agreement to email of divested employees, SharePoint sites for the divested departments, and MS Teams teams for the divested departments

They do a lot of these acquisitions and have a fairly standard process where they will connect to our tenant with ShareGate and migrate what they need. I think most of the time they do full acquisitions, not partial ones

Our issue is that Sharegate apparently needs full permissions into our entire tenant, and we're obviously hesitant to do that

So my question to the peanut gallery is: Is there a way to mitigate this risk? We're waiting to hear back from ShareGate support if the new-ish Exchange Online RBAC for Applications can be applied to the app registration, but that will only solve our email problem

They've suggested that we use a VM in our environment for the migration and we can record/shoulder surf what they're doing, but I don't know enough about ShareGate to know if that is viable. Is it an on-prem tool, or is it a cloud tool? Is it possible for us to lock it so that it can only be used on a machine we control? Seems like if it's a cloud tool that's not going to work

Family on a legacy plan, question about how to proceed w/ a phone payment plan in place

My wife is on an AT&T plan with her mom and sister that has been in place since before we met 5 years ago. I'm on US Mobile, but was previously on Verizon with my family, but now just on US Mobile by myself

At home we have AT&T Fiber, and it's tied to my wife's account so we're getting the discount on fiber, but based on when we signed up our 1 gig plan is $60 after discounts where if we signed up new today it'd be like $35-40

On the mobile side, they are on Unlimited Plus Multi-Line. For the 3 lines it's $157 and change PLUS access fees for each line so they're paying damn near $300 for three lines after a price increase this month so obviously we've got to make a change

The ideal path would be to get us over to AT&T OneConnect: Move them all over to an MVNO for a month or two and then sign up for a new OneConnect account in my name

Our main problem is my mother in law is only 7 payments into a 36 month phone financing plan that AT&T is crediting back almost 100%

My main question is, could we evaporate all other lines on this account and leave just her, and then have her move into a current AT&T 55+ plan, but not impact her phone credits? She's "paying" $33.34 a month for this phone and getting $30.56 in credits, presumably from a trade-in, so I don't want to rock that boat but need to find the most cost effective way to get out of this old legacy phone plan for them

[Hiring] Atlanta, GA (Buckhead) - Sr Devops Engineer (but traditional sysadmins, read too)

Details up front:

  • $115-120k + bonus
  • On-site in Buckhead, Atlanta, GA. Walking distance to the Buckhead MARTA station
    • No flexibility in this, not my decision
  • No sponsorship ability, must already be eligible to work in the US

I lead the infrastructure team for a real estate company. Our team is responsible for basically all of the core IT and technology infrastructure (network, AD, Intune, Entra, Microsoft 365, Azure)

We are all in on Azure and Microsoft technologies, and all of our infrastructure is in Azure with no on-premise hardware except for network gear

We've got many teams using Azure: Data analytics, data engineering, software engineering, and they all do things kind of on their own self-supported. My mandate when I joined the company about a year ago was to begin consolidating management of our Azure estate and to build a true "enterprise-grade" platform for the various engineering teams to build on

This is essentially building half of my team (the other half is focused on more end-user stuff like Intune and email, etc)

The goals of this position are:

  • Standardize, modularize, & maintain Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, but I'm also very fond of Bicep) and provide IaC modules as a service to engineering teams
  • Manage CI/CD processes (GIthub)
  • Help build a monitoring & observability platform (we haven't picked one yet)
  • Implement and enforce security standards and best practices for our stakeholder teams
  • Respond to infrastructure related incidents and participate in an on call rotation
  • Help us define how we will use and allow AI-assisted development, both from our SW Engineers but also "citizen" developers in the company. This includes both AI agent deployment and lifecycle management but also how might we support "vibe-coded" apps from users in the business. This one might be controversial, and I am somewhat of an AI skeptic so this is not going to be the wild west.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, not required
  • 5 Years experience in devops/cloud engineering/SRE
  • Deep expertise in Azure specifically
  • MSFT certs preferred but not required. AZ-104, 204, 305, or 400 are what we're looking for

One thing about this role is that our team is fairly small right now, and in a building/rebuilding phase. I know our job title and requirements are going to pull in a lot of purely devops folks and that's great, and what we're looking for

However, what will put you ahead of the pack is if you are approaching this from a traditional IT/sysadmin background. We vascillated on the job title for this. It was going to be SRE at first, then Cloud Engineer, and then we landed on Devops Eng

We're not a SaaS company, we're not a software company. This is an internal IT role for a real estate firm

If you can write Terraform and Github Actions but also know what FSMO roles are, you're the unicorn I'm looking for.

However that is not a hard requirement. We're looking for a good solid engineer that knows how systems work together, has a sincere curiosity when it comes to problem solving, and has the ability to lead projects and collaborate across teams with different reporting structures

Ping me in a DM if this is even remotely interesting to you

Comcast left trash in my yard

My electric utility recently replaced the poles in my neighborhood. Today, a contractor for Comcast came through and moved the cable lines from the old poles to the new pole

I am not a current Comcast customer, but I have been previously. There were two lines running to my house, one buried from the pole to the house and one aerial from the pole to the house

The aerial line to my house was unused, and could not be used. I've been wanting to get it off the house.

However when I got home the Comcast contractors had cut the line and just left it hanging on my house from the 2nd floor down to the ground.

Additionally they had left trash in my driveway where they had been working, including sharp pieces of metal that would have pierced my tires had I not seen it

How can I report this so that someone responsible at Comcast knows how shoddy their contractors are working out here? I can't call to customer support because I'm not an active customer

I'm thinking of picking up a starlink mini to install in my Jeep and keeping it on standby most of the time. Most places I go offroading have ok cell service, but I do want to be covered just in case, plus I can have the mini for a ready to go backup if my internet at home goes down

But, there a few things I'm trying to figure out:

First, what's the RF danger from the mini? It'd probably end up in the headliner area in the front seat between passenger and driver?

Also, in Standby mode what happens when you start moving? I know it's not allowed to use while in motion, but is there a penalty or does it just disconnect? I want to basically wire it up in a way that it'll likely be on any time the Jeep is on. If it's moving very often will Starlink get pissed off and disconnect me?
