Did you know that Tagore inspired Koreans under Japanese occupation?

Did you know that Tagore inspired Koreans under Japanese occupation? In his messages to Korean people, Korea is portrayed as 'one of its lamp-bearers'. During the darkest period of Korean history, Tagore's lamp illuminated Korean people's heart.

According to Korean media <Donga Daily>, dated April 3rd 1929, He is also described as '詩聖' (the sage of poetry), which only refers a few legendary poets in history in East Asian world. For example, Chinese poet Dufu is called by same words.

Happy Independence Day! Love From Korea.

August 15th is Independence Day to both India and Korea.

To celebrate our Independence Day, I want to quote some parts of <Glimpse of World History> by Jawaharlal Nehru.

Happy Independence Day! Love From Korea.

"India waited after the war; resentful, rather aggressive, not very hopeful, but still expectant. Within a few months, the first fruits of the new British policy, so eagerly waited for, appeared in the shape of a proposal to pass special laws to control the revolutionary movement. Instead of more freedom, there was to be more repression. These Bills were based on the report of a committee and were known as the Rowlatt Bills. But very soon they were called the "Black Bills" all over the country, and were denounced everywhere and by every Indian, including even the most moderate. They gave great powers to the government and the police to arrest, keep in prison without trial, or to have a secret trial of, any person they disapproved of or suspected. A famous description of these Bills at the time was: na vakil, na appeal, na dalil. As the outcry against the Bills gained volume, a new factor appeared, a little cloud on the political horizon which grew and spread rapidly till it covered the Indian sky. This new factor was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. " (Chapter 160 - India Follows Ghandi)

"But Korea, like her elder sister China, became fossilized and stagnant, and had to pay the penalty for this. Korea was givenits oldname again— Chosen, the land of the morning calm. The Japanese brought some modern reforms with them, but they ruthlessly crushed the spirit of the Korean people. For many years the struggle for independence continued and there were many outbreaks, the most important one being in 1919. The people of Korea, and especially young men and women, struggled gallantly against tremendous odds. On one occasion, when a Korean organization fighting for freedom formally declared independence, and thus defied the Japanese, the story goes that they immediately telephoned to the police and informed them of what they had done! Thus deliberately they sacrified themselves for their ideal. The suppression of the Koreans by the Japanese is a very sad and dark chapter in history. You will be interested to know that young Korean girls, many of them fresh from college, played a prominent part in the struggle. " (Chapter 118 - China Becomes A Republic)

My first attempt to cooking in Taipei

I am not good at cooking since I have never done it before. I used to eat my mother’s food when I was in Korea. After I came to Taiwan for studying, I usually had some noodles in restaurants. But I still missed homemade food with various side dishes.

So I decided to prepare meal by myself. In this small apartment without stove, I was allowed to have fresh vegetables such as paprika and cucumber. And I mixed spinach with miso instead of deonjang. I also replaced Kimchi with Taiwanese sour cabbage(酸白菜). I used Taiwanese local ingredients, which are easier to access than Korean vegetables and sources.

It is similar to ‘cutting’ than ‘cooking’ since I nearly didn’t do any process on ingredients. Only mixed spinach was cooked for 2 minutes in the microwave, before it is coated with two tablespoons of miso and one tablespoon of sesame oil. (I think I can reduce miso into one tablespoon next time, by the way.)

I am from Korea. I can’t be myself wherever I am.

I don’t know whether I am in the right place or not. This is not something that suffocates me until I die, but I just want to say a little bit words about it.

I have just seen an old picture of Korean high school students on Reddit, and as long as I remember, the first comment was saying that they finally found Korean faces without plastic surgery.

I felt a little bit sad after I saw the comment, because I have been facing this kind of bias in the real life as well. A little about me, I was born and raised in Korea and currently living in Taiwan to study Chinese literature.

When people here first see me, they start to say stupid words. For example, they often ask me— Is it true that every Korean who has just graduated from high school gets plastic surgery to celebrate their transition to adulthood?

Or, they appreciate our beauty in a very weird way, like “I love Korean actors for their appearance which is made by plastic surgery”, “I am very surprised to see a Korean woman without plastic surgery like you”….

Wow, wow, wow… All of these are racism but this kind of people justify it as mentioning reality… In this globalised world, they seem to be having 0 Korean friend… Korea in reality, I and none of my friends did plastic surgery.

As a queer person who was grown in the small city in Korea, I spent my whole life looking for the place that can be myself. I was sick of Korean people easily judging others by their appearance, talking tons of racist and sexist words in daily conversation and so on… Now, I realised that there is no room for me in the world. Because I am a queer, assigned woman, as well as Korean.
