Quarrel: June Updates

Hello everyone, I'd like to give you a rundown on what all happened in June and a look at future updates/ideas I have.

Recipes

I added recipe cards because I absolutely hate the format of all the blogs where you have to scroll back and forth to find ingredients and temperature in a dissertation. So I figured I might as well fix that problem, you can now share a recipe you like. You can put tags on it like vegan, gluten free, etc. Its also interactive in a way that you or others can follow along the recipe by crossing it off. You can also switch from US to metric

In the web search if you search vegan or any other tags, those recipes will show up.

Web search

Our web search got a bit better and smarter with a pseudo calculator. What is 1+1? it will give you the answer. But also improved on how searches are handled and other various UI changes. I feel like I need to say that this only gets better over time because it is user curated.

Achievements

I added one achievement (Founders) to get feedback on how its done and to get a read on whether to add more and if so how to implement them.

Images

Individual and Supporter subs get uncompressed photo uploads, so you can show off everything you want. 50/100gb of storage. You can also DM unlimited uncompressed photos to your friends.

I'm looking to adding this for free users but very limted like 100mbs or something. Haven't decided yet.

Example: https://quarrel.ing/media/cc132b30-397f-4674-82fc-368ccabc061f.orig.jpg

Bluesky

You can now sign in with your Bluesky account. If someone you follow on Bluesky joins Quarrel you'll get a notification. You can also cross post from Quarrel to Bluesky, though not the other way around.

Quarrel is on Android!

We're on Google Play(if you didn't know)! You can now install Quarrel as a proper app on your Android device, get push notifications.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.quarrel.twa

There's more that was done that you can look at here: quarrel.app/version

Future

Now lets look at the future and what that holds.

Next month

Arcade

Ongoing building of the games in the arcade, and hopefully one game that gets completed.

UI/UX

Always ongoing.

Coins

I'd like to figure out what to do with my currency system, I'm having trouble on what to do with it, but I know there's something there that I can do to make it worthwhile, just haven't figured it out yet.

Beyond

iOS app

I'd like to get Quarrel on iOS at some point. The reason it's not there yet is simple, its expensive, don't have a mac, and I'd need enough subscribers to justify it. So if you want it, tell your friends.

Community edits

Since its not open sourced (yet) I'm looking into a way for the community to edit the website and vote on those edits to go through in an editor.

For example, say someone wants to translate the whole website into a different language they can. The flow would be something like this:

Propose a change → seconded by the community → community vote → system review → live on the site (or rejected if it fails)

This way people without technical skill can feel like they contributed to the community/website in some way.

I'm still pondering on the idea, but I think it could be neat if properly implemented.

Anyways if you have any questions or concerns I'd like to hear them. Thank you once again.

Susie Lee signed a pledge saying she's "not socialist." Hypocrite.

Only 15 out of 200+ House Democrats signed this dumb "Promise to America" god forsaken capitalism pledge. So I got curious and looked to see what kind of socialsim she participated in.

Public school kid from Ohio. Got through Carnegie Mellon on federal loans and scholarships. Dad was a Korean War vet. She spent her whole career running nonprofits that run on government grants. Just secured $40 million in federal money for Nevada water infrastructure. Her husband's casino took $5.6 million in PPP loans during COVID. So either pay it all back or stop signing pledges against the thing that built your entire life.

And if her office wants to bring up Cuba, the US has maintained a full economic embargo on that country since 1962. You don't strangle a country for 60 years and then use it as your proof. Go look at Norway, which nationalized its oil industry and now sits on a sovereign wealth fund worth over a trillion dollars. Or Finland, which has the best public education system in the world and it's free through university. Or Denmark, which keeps getting ranked the happiest country on earth. None of them are Venezuela. The pledge is pointless anyway. Nobody running for anything in the US is actually proposing socialism(well a few are, need more). She signed a document against something that isn'thappening.

Oh and she took a $24,000 trip to London with her adult son paid for by an outside group. Took her daughter to Portugal the year before. Both places with universal healthcare and public programs that actually work. Came back and signed an anti-socialism pledge.

At this point someone just needs to ask her if she even knows what socialism means.

First time watcher of everything

I have finsihed dragon ball, dragon ball z kai,and now im on super.

First, idk if i missed it anywhere, but where does Z come from? Im co fused by the Z part.

Second,i hate goku. I think goku in general turned absolutely terrible. His personality, and selfishness, mixed with his holyer than thou. Even though hes not holy or good at all hes the most selfish person on the show. In dragonball he killed what 2,000 some people? But now its like hey person who mass killed people. Hope you live so we can fight again! Like he should show no remorse towards these villains, yet doesnt care to bring his brother back to life?

I wish there were hints in dragonball about buu or something. Since buus egg has been on earth for a long time.

Why hasnt breeus? Been mentioned before now if everyone is afraid of him and knew him. Hes been asleep for only 30 years. But no kai mentioned him until super.

Idk theres just a lot of things that bother me with dragon ball. These are just a few of the things.

Quarrel update: we're on Google Play now!

Hey everyone, since my last post a lot has changed and I'm excited to share what's been going on.

As of Wednesday we're live on the Google Play Store. If you were one of the few who helped me get there, thank you so much, seriously! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ing.quarrel.twa

I also got business cards made to hand out at local events and coffee shops. https://quarrel.ing/media/baf277dc-0cfe-4ca5-875e-d5087cb44625.orig.jpg

I've been heads-down building every day, improvements, new features, bug fixes. I keep a full version history documenting everything: quarrel.ing/version

If you haven't seen it yet, I put together a promo video: https://quarrel.ing/promo

I'll also be offering two APK downloads for anyone who doesn't want to go through Google Play in the next week or so. One with Firebase push notifications and one without, your choice.

You can download your data anytime from Settings > Privacy. Not open source yet, but your data is always yours. If you think something's missing from the export, let me know.

One thing still in progress: photo upload speed. Images go through a content filter and get converted into multiple AVIF formats, so there's some processing time(most likely a server issue on my end that).

I genuinely think Quarrel is worth trying. But I'm biased lol

Age verification is bad

Age verification is on the rise, from companies adopting it to countries now banning kids under 16 from using social media.

Let me give a little backstory using my own experience as a millennial as an example. When I was around 15 one of my friends and I had a bet, well I lost, and this required me to see something no kid should see: 2g1c. Real or not, it and many other things I stumbled upon shouldn't be seen by kids my age or younger at the time. Even though it probably impacted me negatively, it did have some positive effects as well.

For instance, it showed me the depravity and fragility of humans. It's not just a movie, it's real, and actions have consequences that you might not come back from. So it taught me about people in ways I would probably still be ignorant of today. It taught me to be careful on the internet because it isn't a safe place. It also taught me how to clean a computer of viruses. Lol.

What I'm saying is I don't think kids or anyone really should see the stuff I saw. But in real life stuff will happen, good and bad, and trying to control every aspect of someone has its own consequences too.

These guardrails only stop those who don't need the protection. At the very least it stops those who are honest. It creates a weird and more harmful situation when a kid does find a way around it, because it's going to end up being less moderated since there are "no kids on the internet." It will also make kids easier targets for scams and predators.

How? The UK government's own impact assessment admitted age verification could push kids toward the dark web, where they'd be exposed to more extreme material and illegal activity.

Whenever I did something wrong my parents explained why. They didn't punish me for being curious. They made me a better person through that experience. Telling me why this or that is bad. How it impacts others.

Maybe instead of forcing something on a population that's used to social media, force new parents to go to school on how to communicate with their kids. None of us are here by choice and everyone makes mistakes. So make a law that new parents must take a class on how to properly talk and engage with their kids. Maybe then you wouldn't need everyone's identity on the internet, where corrupt corporations have even further access to your personal data and leaks happen all the time.

Identity theft is not a joke, Jim

Claude made my game better ; ;

I built a browser arcade game for my social platform and used Claude (in Cowork mode) to overhaul it. It's a mix between Space Invaders and Vampire Survivors!

I gave it my kaplay version and just said make this 10xs better. I don't know if its 10xs better but it runs a lot better and it added a bunch of new things. I'm going to fine tune it more but yeah, i think its pretty fun. Its free to check out: https://quarrel.ing/arcade/swarm

Feedback is welcome. ITS A BIT ON THE HARD SIDE.

Quarrel, take two. A proper intro.

Hello again. My last post here didn't land, and that's fair. I basically walked in, said "here's my app," and figured anyone curious would ask. That's not how it works. So I took some time and I'm trying this again, properly.

A bit about me first. I studied electrical engineering and political science, and on the side I do a lot of art and design. Here's a piece of mine if you want a sense of who's behind this: https://quarrel.ing/posts/4aa89394-6d5e-4e8f-9c74-cc8ccdef84d7

What I actually want to talk about is the thing I've been building for over a year. It started as an educational project and quietly turned into a social media site, which is funny because I've never liked social media. I deleted Facebook and Instagram over a decade ago and never missed them. But I love the thing underneath all of it: someone from Canada connecting with someone in Lisbon at 2am about something neither will ever concede.

What I can't stand is that these platforms are run by people who would sell your life for a dollar without blinking. They take your information, they sell it, and the only thing you get back is ads built from the same data.

So this is the opposite of that. Quarrel is meant to be built and morphed into whatever you want it to be, from your feed to the curated web search to the way the whole site looks. I want it to feel like yours, and I'll keep adding ways to make that true.

Features

Voting. There's no up/down binary here. Right now every post is a 2D field you vote on: one axis is whether you agree, the other is whether the post is any good (low effort to sharp). That gives a post two scores, each from -1 to +1, so a link or a take you disagree with can still rate high on quality instead of getting buried just because people don't like it. The spread of votes shows up as a colored wave on the post, so you see the shape of the room, not just a number.

Debates. People love arguing online and there's never been a good way to actually structure it or measure it in any meaningful way. Debate posts are a separate format built for exactly that: a claim with for, against, and challenge sides, where a sharp argument can get credit even if it doesn't fully convert you. The structure and the mechanics will probably keep changing with feedback, but I think it holds a lot of promise.

https://preview.redd.it/gy8iiq1a764h1.png?width=534&format=png&auto=webp&s=803d6d8d521038a7ef8e8bbaddeeb6f2c6243ed2

Flow-System. Comments have a unique 'flow' state to them.

https://preview.redd.it/s1fxym8n864h1.png?width=786&format=png&auto=webp&s=aa365831f94b3bdc2987665bbd2bd3915c99b264

DMs. Your messages are yours. They hit the server already encrypted, they're burned after reading, and they are saved to your device.

3D. There are whole sites dedicated to posting 3D models, but the general public never visits them. That's a lost opportunity. Here you can drop a 3D object in a normal post and everyday people actually see what makers are building.

https://preview.redd.it/ib864gjs764h1.png?width=409&format=png&auto=webp&s=48f9820e09295d30a1219b17a85c461d32e2b43f

Web search. Sort of a search engine, kind of not. It's a user-curated, user-built index: you post links, you upvote and downvote them. It only gets better with more people using it. It also fetch's links from posts as well. Any videos posted will be indexed, and photos too.

https://preview.redd.it/roilj4sg764h1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=31032ea81e19934d38ef64ffe4dd1b60d694abda

Stack

  • SvelteKit and TypeScript
  • Postgres, real-time
  • Cloudflare R2 for media
  • Coolify for self-hosting
  • Brevo for email (I hate inbox spam, so no email notifications, it's only for sign-ups)

Happy to go deeper on any of it in the comments.

I have two asks.

One, I'm running closed testing for the Android app and I need a handful of testers to get it over Google's line (10 people for 14 days). If you're willing, shoot me a DM with the Google account email you use on your phone and I'll add you to the list and send the download link. It's only used to grant test access, nothing else.

Two, selfishly, I'd love for you to come join and tell me what you think. https://quarrel.ing

Critique is genuinely welcome.

Edit: I forgot to mention my arcade ; ;
