Within the last year and chance I lost my job, my apartment, and my relationship. You know, the big three that make your world go ‘round. I struggled with unemployment (have just now found a part-time job after over a year looking) and am heartbroken from the breakup as this was someone I wanted to spend my life with. I’m trying to be grateful for what I do have - friends, a relatively healthy body, a functional vehicle, a safe place to live - but the task of climbing out of this hole feels very daunting.
I’d love to hear from women who experienced similar struggles in midlife. How did you rebuild your life, and how did you deal with the feeling that you’re not where you thought you’d be at almost 40? What helped you put your life back together and where are you now?
This show is way less fun than SS. The personalities and clothes on SS were both dramatic but at least the drama was interesting. Basically none of these people are likeable.
Alex Hall: top bully who never grew out of her high school mean girl phase. I know we don’t see everything that goes on but she seems incredibly two-faced. When she told Rose and Jarvis that they were “rubbing their stink on everything at the office” at Gio’s casino night I was shocked that she’d say something like that to someone’s face, and her colleagues no less. I can’t believe she’s a mom. Literally the worst.
Polly: pretty on the outside, ugly on the inside. Loves snow sports a little too much. I need 200% less screaming from her.
Brandi: also two-faced. Seemed like she was cool with Kayla and the Alexes but then switched sides to Hall real quick when she saw that she was the queen bee. Weird that she’d side with the MAGAts as a woman of color but here we are.
Kayla: I liked her at first - she seemed sweet and genuine and I don’t think she deserved the vitriol she got from the other women for coming on to Tyler. (The Alexes were right about the hypocrisy.) Her confession to Hall at the yacht party was weird as hell though, especially after how awful Hall was to her and the Alexes sticking up for her. Girl doesn’t know what’s good for her.
Lauren: just kind of there.
Rose: kind of dumb (“Was Abraham Lincoln the first president?” will live rent free in my head for the rest of my years) but I don’t dislike her. She seems genuine and like she’s using the false confidence to cover up some insecurity. I think she sticks with Jarvis because Jarvis is genuinely confident and doesn’t take shit and Rose is hoping that will rub off on her.
Jarvis: there’s a world where she’s the queen bee in the office. Her takedown of Polly was great. I loved that the girls were making fun of her speech and eloquence because it seemed like they were intimidated. She’s poised and intelligent and calculated and that makes for great television.
Gio: despite the weird super-cocky intro he had, he ended up being one of my favorites. He seems sweet and genuine. Stays out of drama.
Tyler: hypocrite.
Austin: just kind of there.
Sean: just kind of there.
I’m not sure I have it in me for another season of this mean girl bullshit. At least Christine and Bre were charismatic villains. Alex Hall and Polly are just loud and grating with no charm or subtlety.

(Previous post about the breakup here.)
I opened up Instagram today (ironically, to message an acquaintance who is also going through a similar breakup) and the first post it presented me with was my ex of 3.5 months hard-launching his new girlfriend - his longtime friend. The corpse of our relationship had barely cooled before he monkey-branched to her. To say that I am reeling is an understatement.
When we broke up I told my friends that I was so sure that his single female friends would shoot their shot, because he is a catch - handsome, smart, funny, with a stable job and a passion project, loves animals, nerdy, outdoorsy, supportive, generous... I could go on. All the reasons I fell in love with him. She was at the top of my list. They had a close emotional friendship - they were both going through a divorce at the same time and supported each other through it - and I didn't think anything of it because I also have close male friends and he has plenty of other female friends whom he's also close with. I fully believe that men and women can be close platonic friends, but damn if this didn't shatter my trust completely.
I asked him when we broke up whether there was anyone else, since it was so sudden and such a rug pull. (I had her in mind.) He said no. (He had never lied to me.) I also just remembered that, at the beginning of the year, I had asked him whether he thought she'd ever be interested in him, and he said no, he wasn't her type. I don't think he was cheating on me, but I do think my intuition had caught on to something, a closeness that wasn't there in his other relationships. I do think that when he started really thinking and visualizing his life moving forward, he saw himself with someone like her rather than someone like me, or maybe just her. I don't know how soon after the breakup they got together, and I don't need to know, and I never will. I do know that he had never posted me on Instagram, and he posted her months, if not weeks, into their relationships. (I don't put a lot of weight into social media in general, but posting about how you're so happy with your new love 3.5 months after a breakup is a choice.) He also didn't warn me or give me a heads up that it was coming. Blindsided all over again.
So here I am, still trying to move on from the breakup, still healing, and slapped in the face with the evidence of his having moved on so quickly. I'm still heartbroken while he's posting hearts on social media. I'm struggling to reconcile the weight of the betrayal and the disrespect with the person I had believed him to be. I feel sick.
Sad girl kale sausage soup.
I am a firm believer in being friends with ex-partners when the circumstances are right, ie no abuse, cheating or anything like that, just a breakup where you're better off as platonic friends than romantic partners or life incompatibilities.
However, I'm struggling with my decision in this case. I was broken up with a little over three months ago by the man I wanted to marry. It came out of nowhere and blindsided me, and I'm still getting over it. He said he wants to be friends, and I know he means it because he tried very hard to remain friends with his ex-wife after they separated (I know there was no funny business there). I just don't know if that's possible. I didn't want this breakup and it hurt me terribly, and I'm not sure if I'll ever see him as anything other than "the one that got away".
I know I don't have to decide right now, or anytime soon, but I'm curious to hear from other women who have been in this situation and how y'all decided to move forward. Were you able to build a friendship eventually, or was it just too painful to let him remain in your life?
ETA: I want to clarify that I am not looking to be friends with him right now, or anytime soon. I know I’m nowhere near ready for that. We’re not currently in contact.
ETA2: I am already friends with several of my previous partners and have no problem being their friend. I enjoy their company and have fully moved on from any lingering feelings. I’m specifically wondering if it’s possible to make a friendship work with someone you considered to be “the one” where the feelings were that much stronger and you were picking a future together.
I live in Oregon and I’d like to go down to the redwoods in NorCal and do a “retreat” of sorts. I’m really going through it and want to get away for a little while, spend some time in nature, etc. I’ve driven through the area once on a road trip down to Napa/Sonoma and loved it, so I’d love to go back for a solo stay.
I’d prefer to avoid luxury hotels and resorts as funds are a consideration, and I’m not into camping. What cities/locations should I look at, and are there any recommended retreats in the region for burned-out millennials who just need to hug a (giant) tree?
I moved recently and a lot of my stuff is in storage, and I got rid of a lot of things. Recently I’ve unearthed a few items I’d like to store away, out of sight, but still hold on to for now. Does anyone have any small-ish, decorative-ish boxes they’d be willing to part with? (Smaller than a breadbox; like half- to a third-shoebox?)
I know it’s a long stretch, but I’d like to find an Apple Watch for my mom. She’s getting older and lives alone out of state, and while she’s still very active I’d like to get her something that can serve as a safety backup since I’m a few hours away. Apple Watch specifically because we both exist within the Apple ecosystem.
I’d buy her one but I’ve been unemployed for a year 🫠
I desperately need a sun shade for the front windshield of my 1987 240 and all of the cheap ones easily available seem to be made for smaller windshields. Can anyone recommend a sun shade that doesn't cost $50 and will fit the Volvo's giant windshield?
The flat kind that can hang on the back of a door. Please & thank you!
Five cardboard boxes, the biggest one (big) full of packing paper. Pickup in Rose City Park.
I desperately need a massage and I have CareOregon. Are there massage therapists (or chiropractors who also offer massage) that are in-network? My PCP recommended one but I cannot get hold of them.
About 15-20ish hangers. Pickup in Powellhurst-Gilbert. Need them gone by tomorrow evening.
Two matching, one not. No flaws, just don’t need them anymore. Pickup in Powellhurst-Gilbert.
We have been together for almost two years. We met in the wild, neither one of us was looking to date but we had the most hallmark movie meet-cute and clicked instantly. He’s everything I wanted in a partner - handsome, funny, thoughtful, kind, smart, adventurous. He cooks and cleans, has hobbies, maintains a healthy social life, has a steady job. We had so much fun together and the chemistry was great. I was beginning to dream of a future together.
Then he broke up with me out of nowhere. Total rug pull. Said that he didn’t think we were compatible long term, that he didn’t see himself marrying me. That he had been having doubts but chose not to bring them up with me to discuss. Just kept it to himself and decided that I wasn’t his “end all be all”.
I’ve been living with him for the past month (moved in temporarily at the beginning of the year after losing my job last year) and it’s been hell. Literal hell. I cried myself to sleep most nights. Now I cry about half of the time. Heartbreak isn’t a strong enough word for what I’m feeling. It’s like my entire world shattered and will never be put together right again. Everyone says that only time will fix things but I just want to forget the relationship ever happened. I want to forget what it’s like to have everything you ever wanted and to lose it all. I wish I’d never met him.
Everything bagel with lox and the works.
Sob story: I was laid off last year and was just broken up with so I have to move out of my ex’s place. I’ll be renting a room in a house with no AC and no AC units in place. I have a chronic illness that makes me pretty heat intolerant so living without AC is really challenging.
I know it’s a long shot but if anyone has an AC unit or even a tower fan I’d love to take it off your hands!
I was recently diagnosed with an egg white allergy, which was a surprise to me as I eat eggs most mornings. Now I'm trying to avoid them but I'm really struggling with coming up with egg-free breakfast ideas that are filling and high in protein.
I don't really like dairy, I hate yogurt and cottage cheese grosses me out so those ideas are out unfortunately, no granola parfaits for me. I also have a chronic illness that makes it difficult for me to have high-carb meals so things like pancakes and waffles aren't ideal (plus I'll be hungry in an hour as my metabolism tends to burn through carbs very quickly).
I'm going to try egg alternatives and recipes like scrambled tofu, but are there any other egg-free, dairy-free high-protein and filling breakfasts I should try?
Big garbage bag of plastic hangers in assorted colors, mostly black, white, and purple.
Prior to this the only allergic reactions I've ever had were to amoxicillin.
Just did a blood allergen test (I have MCAS) and it came back positive for almonds and egg whites. (Egg yolks were fine.) My doctor told me that I can't have any eggs where the whites and yolks are separated (boiled, fried) but scrambled is fine. I'm having trouble finding any literature online that supports this claim - everything I see says to avoid eggs entirely.
I've also never had an allergic reaction to eggs or almonds, and I eat eggs for breakfast multiple times a week. My doctor also mentioned that the more exposure I have to an allergen, the worse a reaction can be. So I want to avoid eggs for safety reasons, but it seems silly to give up something that's never given me trouble (that I know of).
Has anyone else heard of the scrambled egg option? It seems like the smart thing to do would be an elimination diet, so I might go that route.
