First solo trip

Hey girlies!!!

It’s is my first trip ever solo I promised my self to break this chain of fear/comfort zone and predictability.

I have been going through tough time lately traumatic events I lost so many people and realized that no one is left but myself and always will be.

I have decided that I am not going to cancel my trips nor adventure if no one is joining. It will be my first time ever being completely relying on myself even tho i have always been a good planner considering everything and being so mature of planning things.

However it is different this time because actually I’ll be alone . I am very open to have convo with strangers with no specific age nor race or religion i really love to interact with people as long as there’s no harm I have difficulty with saying NO or drawing boundaries I have been used a lot and pattern keeps repeating itself but I still have high hopes in people plus I don’t listen I’m very smart and master in analyzing but again I don’t use any tactics on others.

Kindly give me advice that will help on this journey of solo trips.

Adventure next June

After moving my last son in yesterday to college, I’ve spent the last almost 30 years taking care of everyone else. Husband isn’t interested in marriage counseling. I am making plans for a month away next June. I’m a teacher or I wouldn’t wait. Retired once and on a second teaching career but might be retiring again in May for good.

Is a month in Sicily primarily for June a crazy idea at 58? I’ve traveled extensively but haven’t since 24 alone.

Returned from my second solo trip and it just wasn’t the same

Well of course it wouldn’t be THE SAME - I mean it wasn’t as fun as the first one.
And I just wander if it’s the destination I picked or if I was in a different state of mind than I was last time.

So my first time solo traveling was almost a year ago, in September 2025 - I stayed two nights in Budapest in a hostel, then took a bus to Bratislava Slovakia, stayed one night there and returned to Budapest for a 2ish night (as the flight was at 5 am).

This time I went to Bulgaria and did a slightly similar thing. 2 nights in a hotel in Sofia, 2 nights in Plovdiv and then 1ish night in Sofia as again, the flight back was at 5 am.

I still had a great time, but I couldn’t not notice that it was way less great than the first solo travel. Now I’m thinking it could be due to certain things. Perhaps, the fact that in Budapest I stayed in a hostel which is a very pro-friendly act kept me less lonely. Even tho I didn’t really make any friends at that hostel or hung with any, it still had a very “not alone” vibe to it (as I literally was not alone). This time in Bulgaria I felt like I’m too exaughsted to deal with a hostel and opted for a hotel. Well, my quality of sleep was significantly better and I had better chilling-alone times. But I was very much alone.
\- another possibility that comes to mind is the destinations. As sad and uncultured as it is, I find that I’m not much of a museum girl. And while I can’t tell you what there is in Budapest - I’m certain there were more things there, than in Sofia. Perhaps the way the city is built - the fact that there are two distinct parts, possibly the fact that the streets seem slightly interesting (or perhaps I’m making this up). I don’t want to be one of those people who say Bulgaria is boring - but perhaps it is?
It’s just, in Bulgaria I felt like having friends with me could make it way more fun. In Budapest I did not feel that as often - which is the thing I mostly find weird.
Note: when I go on vacation family I feel like I just NEED that walk alone, I’m basically starving for some alone time, and I also feel like I get way less familiar with the destination. So I really wonder what it is.

Solo female travel to Madeira

I am considering going for some days to Madeira from Canada to visit. I have a few concerns, how many days is enough? Is it safe for women alone ? I do not want to rent a car because I don’t like driving. How hard would it be to then go around and visit places ? Is it doable ? My intention is to visit some beaches relax and some easy hiking.

Portland Maine safety?

I’ve done a lot of solo traveling over the last few months, but I’ve always stayed fairly close (at least 6 hours was my furthest) from home. Visiting Maine would put me 9 hours from home, and this Labor Day weekend I really want to go to Maine and explore Portland and the Coast. i know since it’s labour day weekend that’s going to be insanely busy, but as a solo traveler how safe is Portland, Freeport, and Brunswik areas? Any suggestions for places to car camp as well (preferably for free since gas is already going to be an arm and a leg). Thank you!

Best solo travel spots in November

Hi everyone! First time poster :) I am a 27 year old teacher looking to spend 4-5 days abroad during thanksgiving week! I would be looking for affordability, safety and lots of things to do. I am located near a major airport. I would plan to stay in a female only hostel room or cheap airbnb. I would prefer a warmer climate (I know- hard ask in November). I love beaches, pretty scenery, parks, long walks, anything in nature. I’ve visited Costa Rica by myself and a few of the islands with friends. I’m open to going to Europe but I’d be a little sad about missing days to the long flights. I’m also not opposed to staying in the US- just don’t say Florida, I already live there. Helpppp!

First time solo-traveling to Europe - where should I go?

I got laid off on Friday and immediately booked a month long Europe trip. Irresponsible? Probably. Something I'll end up regretting? Definitely not. TLDR - I'm a 28 year old woman who's traveled a pretty good amount - think Barcelona, Amsterdam, parts of Portugal, Italy, the UK, etc. But, I've never solo traveled. I'll be traveling with my sister to Vienna mid-September, followed by Budapest. From there, I have about ~18 days of solo time before meeting a friend in Copenhagen for a week. I'm looking for advice on how I should spend that time.

As I've never solo traveled, I want to be extra cautious on safety, ease of getting around, and of course things to do as a solo traveler who doesn't do well sitting still. I'd ideally love to do a combination of a warmer place (I live in NYC and am already dreading the winter), and a city environment. So, initial idea is to stay around central Europe and go to Prague for a few days post-Budapest...but then I'm stuck. Do I go to Italy or the south of Spain? Do I explore Germany or Belgium? What about all of the above?

I don't think I feel comfortable staying in a shared hostel room for the entirety of the trip, so that's also (price-wise) something I've been running into. Money, of course, is a key factor but clearly I'm taking a month long Europe trip so it's not like I have a track record of being responsible with it.

Would love any thoughts, opinions, advice. And thank you in advance!

Feeling lonely on my solo trip

I’m on my first ever solo trip (F21). I travelled a few weeks trough Japan with family first and decided I wanted to travel a bit longer so I went to Taiwan by myself. I’m now a week and a half on my own and I’ve loved it for the most part but I’m starting to feel really lonely.

I first stayed a few more days in Tokyo where I met some people and did some drinks with but now that I’m in Taiwan I can’t find any other foreigners to do something with. All the hostels I am staying at aren’t social at all and almost no one speaks English.

Mostly I’m fine on my own but I do wish I could meet some more people. I just don’t know where (especially bc I don’t drink alcohol/like to party). I have spoken to some locals, shopowners, … but mostly it’s just pretty superficial. Sometimes I just have this wave of loneliness and want to go home. Does anyone have any tips?

I also can’t really find any tours that are within my budget or where other foreigners would join. I’ve stayed so far in Kaohsiung and Taichung but going to Taipei soon.

Loneliness while doing solo travels

I’m 25 years old girl and this is my fourth time traveling alone—I’ve learned plenty about courage, independence, and finding my way around, but not about socializing. I can ask someone a question if I need to, but I’ll never be the one to start a conversation. I always stay in hostels, where there are plenty of opportunities to meet people, but I always choose to stay in my room. After my first two solo trips, I dared to spend time in common areas during my third and fourth trips, but what good did it do? I’m an introvert—I’m definitely not talkative—but I always feel jealous and frustrated when I see guys striking up conversations with other girls at the same hostel, or when they just start talking to anyone, while I don’t. I rarely exchange a few words with anyone, but it never leads to, for example, exchanging contacts.

I feel hopeless. I’ve always heard that solo travel teaches you a lot—that’s true—but every time I go somewhere, I end up feeling sorry for myself because of my lack of social skills. And I have in mind 2 types of relationships – romantical ones and just friendships. I've heard how other people made friends from solo traveling – again, I'm being jealous about it, because it does not look possible for me even after traveling the world.

That fucking Instagram algorithm keeps showing me how many of these solo-traveling girls are in all kinds of situationships when I’ve never had anything like that and probably never will. I know, I know—social media is fake—but that really doesn’t help me at all, because I’m definitely insecure about it.

Am I the only one like this? What could I do differently? I know it would take a lot of courage either way, but... I honestly feel hopeless and it takes the majority of joy from just being able to travel alone.

Why is it so taboo to travel alone?

I’m going to Paris soon. And I’m going solo. It’s not my first solo trip, it’s my second fully solo trip. But like everybody in my life seems so against it LOL
I’m doing group tours once I arrive but everyone is so concerned…. Wtaf

I’d be happy and supportive if someone I knew, like a friend, would do it. I think it’s okay to travel alone at least once.

Good first solo trip as 20F?

So I graduate in December and my plans to travel to Puerto Rico with some friends for a grad trip fell through :/ I still really want to take a trip, but I feel like PR as a first time solo traveler isn’t the safest choice. I plan to leave probably January 4-9/10. I’d like to keep my budget around 2k (including airfare and lodging). Considering my budget is this low, staying in the states is probably my best option. I really like outdoor stuff, but I also enjoy the beach. I’m posting to look for advice for a first time solo traveler. Any advice is appreciated, TIA!

I’m 16 and considering my first solo trip to Seoul — experiences from people who traveled young?

Hi! I’m 16 and considering traveling alone to Seoul, South Korea, for around 2 weeks next summer.
My parents fully support it and would give me permission. They’d also help with the planning and I’d have parental consent, travel insurance, emergency contacts, etc.
I’d love to hear from people who **also traveled alone as teenagers or minors**
Did you have problems with accommodation because you were under 18? Did you feel safe and comfortable? What was the hardest part, and would you recommend doing it at 16?
I’m mainly looking for real experiences and advice from people who have traveled alone while they were young. :)

Solo travelers who don’t stay in hostels, do you ever feel isolated/bored at night?!

I’m planning my first solo trip to Guatemala and will be spending 3 of my nights at Lake Atitlán. I’m not really a hostel person, but since I’ll be traveling completely solo, I’m wondering if staying somewhere private will feel isolating at night when I’d rather be socializing.

I currently have an Airbnb booked, near one of the popular hostels (so I can wander during the day or early evening), but it seems pretty secluded, and I realistically will not walk alone in the dark back to my stay. I’ve also been looking at a diff hostel for the social atmosphere/private rooms.

For those who solo travel but don’t typically stay in hostels, do you ever regret not staying somewhere more social? I’m considering splitting my 3 nights between somewhere social and somewhere beautiful/peaceful so I can get a little of both.

18F considering 5–6 months in Latin America — solo or group travel? And is my budget realistic?

18F considering 5–6 months in Latin America — solo or group travel? And is my budget realistic?

Hi everyone!

I’m 18F from Denmark and I’m currently on my first gap year after graduating high school this summer.

I’m seriously considering travelling around Latin America for around 5–6 months, probably starting in October or November.

I’ve currently saved around 78,000 DKK (~11,000 USD), and if I keep working until I leave I might have around 90,000–100,000 DKK. My parents could potentially help me with another 20,000–30,000 DKK if absolutely necessary, but obviously I would prefer not to rely on that.

I have no idea if that is actually enough for 5–6 months, though. I’m not looking for luxury travel at all and I’m happy staying in hostels, taking buses, eating cheaply etc., but I also want to be able to actually do things like hikes, tours, activities and occasionally spend a bit more. So I’d also really love to hear from people who have travelled around Latin America for several months about what they actually spent.

The bigger dilemma is whether I should go alone.

Some of my friends are planning to travel later, but I really want to leave around October/November. I don’t currently have a friend who I feel is the right travel partner for a 5–6 month backpacking trip.

I’m quite independent and I LOVE the idea of being able to decide where I go, how long I stay somewhere, and what I want to do. I also really want to experience places more locally rather than just following a fixed itinerary.

So travelling solo sounds amazing to me.

But I’m also honestly quite scared.

My biggest concerns are safety and loneliness.

I’m a very social person, so I’m worried that travelling alone for 5–6 months could become lonely. I’m also obviously aware that travelling alone as an 18-year-old woman in parts of Latin America comes with safety considerations, and my family is quite worried about me going alone.

The alternative would be joining an organised group/backpacking trip.

I can see the advantages: I would have people around me from the beginning, I’d probably make friends, and I wouldn’t have to deal with the initial uncertainty of travelling alone.

But I’m worried I would feel restricted by a fixed itinerary. I really want the freedom to stay somewhere longer if I love it, change my plans, travel slowly and experience places more independently. I’m also worried that an organised trip might be significantly more expensive than doing it myself.

So I’m wondering if there’s a middle ground.

For example, I could travel independently but stay in social hostels, join day trips/hiking tours and meet people along the way. Maybe I could do a 1–2 week organised trip at the beginning and then continue travelling independently afterwards.

I’d really love to hear from people who have actually done this, especially people who started travelling solo around 18–20.

A few things I’d especially love advice on:

  • Is 80,000–100,000 DKK (~11,500–14,500 USD) a realistic budget for 5–6 months of backpacking in Latin America?
  • How much did you personally spend per month?
  • How did you find the safety aspect as a young woman travelling alone?
  • Did you actually feel unsafe often, or did you get used to it?
  • For people who have done both: solo vs. group travel — which did you prefer and why?
  • And was the extra cost of organised travel worth it?

I’m basically trying to figure out whether I should just bite the bullet and go solo, or whether a group trip would give me a much better experience — especially considering that this would be my first time travelling alone for such a long period.

Any personal experiences or advice would be hugely appreciated! :)

Looking for ideas for my first solo trip ✈️🌍

This year has brought a lot of losses, changes, and unexpected chapters in my life. As I’m getting ready to tuAs I’m getting ready to turn 35, I feel like I really want to do something meaningful for myself.

I’m a big traveler and absolutely love traveling, but I’ve never taken a solo trip before. I’ve also been working as a bartender in NYC for many years, so I definitely know how to have fun, meet people, and enjoy life. 😄

So I’m thinking my birthday could be the perfect time to step outside my comfort zone, heal a little, have some fun, and start a completely new chapter. ❤️

I’m looking for somewhere that feels like a mix of healing + adventure + fun. Maybe somewhere beautiful, peaceful, or completely different from what I’m used to.

If you’ve taken an amazing solo birthday trip, I’d love to hear your recommendations! If you have ideas for events, retreats, group trips, or even plans where I could spend part of my birthday week, please let me know.

I’m open to suggestions and meeting new people along the way. 😊

Where would you go for a first solo trip at 35?

5 Days Off in Oct - Give Me Your Trip Recs Please! 🤍

Hi friends! I have five days off in October - a Wednesday to Sunday situation. I will be traveling from the East Coast of the United States (specifically, Washington DC).

Any recommendations on great places to go? I’m open to traveling internationally, and like a good mix of relaxation, outdoor time, and sightseeing (love the beach, hiking, exploring, etc). I’d prefer to go somewhere in/relatively close to the United States so I don’t spend 2 of my 5 days traveling (looking to keep total travel each way to under 5-6 hours).

What trips have y’all taken that you loved that would fit this bill?! I’m truly open to any vibe – beach, jungle, mountains, city, whatever! Just need a healthy balance of nature, relaxation, and activity and would love to explore a great new place! Thank you!

Feel like a fraud

Being here - I'll be a solo female but definitely holiday rather than "travel"

Anyway, im visiting marrakech in October, Iceland in March and Egypt in August 2027.

Any suggestions for unmissable trips/avoid at all costs would be greatly appreciated

Along with suggestions for a not too expensive November/early December destination for a short break - 4 days or so. Travelling from north west uk, ideally prefer somewhere dry but dont mind cold and dry.

Ive previously been to France, Spain, Greek islands, Milan, Amsterdam, Oslo, so probably wouldnt look to revisit them at present

Im not much of a drinker although I do enjoy dance music and clubs.

Prefer to be doing something- exploring local area, local history etc is more my thing than beaches bars etc.

Currently thinking of Eastern Europe - Prague, dubrovnik maybe, but also perhaps Scandinavian or even Malta...

Suggestions on a postcard 🤷‍♀️😆

Solo Alaska Cruise

Hi fellow solo travelers! I turn 50 in a few years and Alaska has always been on my bucket list. Has anyone gone solo on one of the Princess Cruises? What were your pros and cons? I'd love to get some pointers and recommendations. Also, did anyone see any Northern Lights? Many TIA for any help or advice you could give. Happy travels all!
