BE UP FRONT ABOUT HAVING KIDS.

Don’t mention them in passing after a while talking, and being like “oh, I thought I mentioned that.” Then being like “I’m different.”

🗣️ Don’t omit it on your dating profile (!!!!!)

It’s not like forgetting to mention you hate the color yellow or dislike tacos. Having children is a pretty significant, life-affecting thing. Be explicit that you have children - ESPECIALLY IF THE OTHER PERSON IS EXPLICIT THAT THEY DON’T HAVE/WANT KIDS IN THEIR PROFILE. And it had been brought up multiple times that they did not want children and identified as child free.

You’re a parent, that’s great. I love that for you. But come on 😩 I’m normally so careful to screen parents out when I’m trying to meet people, and this one slipped by me. I feel stupid, hurt, and angry. They were honestly really cool, had they been up front about having kids I may have considered and tried for a friendship at the very least, but I would have been upfront that I wasn’t interested in more than that and it likely wouldn’t have been a waste of time for either of us.

For the record - I do not hate children. I think they’re great. I’ve just been a caregiver in one capacity or another since I was 18, I’m now 34 and my caregiving is not done (I care for my mother). When it’s my time to live my life I want it to be peaceful and either alone or with a partner. Friends and their kids, wonderful (I take my aunt role seriously). But I just wish people thought about why someone is childfree before being so vague and essentially lying by omission. Thought about it, respected it, and didn’t waste their time.

Vent/rant over. Y’all can tear me up idc.

General Resume Tips

So I’m currently revamping my resume to try and find a more in-office or remote administrative healthcare or nonprofit role (focusing on community health, but open to other causes). I have fifteen+ years in clinical healthcare as an EMT/MA (held supervisory roles), as well as nonprofit work/volunteer experience (no management), a BS in Sociology/Biology (graduated in 2015), and just started working on my MPH. My issue is that I have been unemployed the last year or so because I left work to be a caregiver for my mother. She is doing better and I’m coordinating home health for her now so I can go back to work. I am currently working as a baker (hard but fun!) just to make money, but I do not want to stay here. I have not had to structure a more “professional” resume in a while, and I don’t know what the current templates or preferences are.

———————————————

Some general questions:
- Are “Professional Summary” sections necessary or expected anymore?

- Are two-page resumes acceptable? I’ve been able to get away with one most of my previous years (or I found my job with my indeed resume), but my work/volunteer experience takes more room at this point

- I am also working on my TEFL Certification! This isn’t necessarily a focus in my current job search, more of a side interest (I want to volunteer to teach ESL/EFL learners in my area) but is this worth including in my “Education” section? Especially if there’s a chance I could find a nonprofit job dealing with education/TEFL-type work

- How do I note a career gap?? That’s probably my biggest insecurity and fear, especially with the current job market

———————————————

I’m feeling overwhelmed, and I tried utilizing my current school’s career services platform - they are slow to respond and just giving me “yeah that’s great!” responses, which isn’t helpful.

Any tips or guidance are appreciated 🙏🏻 and please feel free to ask clarifying questions.

English Conversation Tutoring :)

Hello! ¡Hola! Nǐ hǎo!

I am newly pursuing my TEFL Certification - this allows me to be a teacher/tutor for English as a Foreign or Second Language! My goal is to eventually teach EFL/ESL classes. But while I work towards this goal, I would love to offer English Conversation tutoring sessions. This would likely be more geared towards non-native English speakers who have a decent handle on the language and just want a more calm, encouraging setting to practice (think level B1-C1, if you’re familiar with the CEFR scale). It would just be conversations about work, friends, family, and familiar topics of interest like music, travel, hobbies, and the like. Kind of like meeting a friend over coffee to have a chat, but with language exposure and guided feedback!

My rates would be:
30 min - $9
60 min - $15
I accept cash, Zelle, or Venmo.

For the rate and to stay close to home myself, I’m willing to meet students publicly within Berkeley County, WV. Open to parks, cafes, libraries, wherever is comfortable for you! We can discuss session frequency when we meet if you’re happy with the first one :) I also encourage you to bring ONE friend or family member with you if that would make you more comfortable in the conversation, or if the student is a minor. There is no additional charge for the extra person. If we begin meeting regularly, I would also be open to FaceTime/WhatsApp video sessions if that is more convenient for you.

A little of my background: I am a 34 year old woman, currently working as a baker but am looking for a more independent/flexible work schedule to accommodate taking care of my mother. I have a passion for languages, learning different cultures, travel, and helping people. I worked as a Medical Assistant previously for 15 years, and I have been to seven countries. I love music, books, I have two dogs, and enjoy various shows/movies. I also like to cook and bake!

If you or anyone you know would benefit or like additional English practice, please comment bellow or message me!

For anyone who is a caregiver for their parent - have you gone to “couples therapy” with them?

I don’t know how else to ask this, calling it couples therapy is weird. But I (34F) live with my mom (64F), she has numerous health issues and while her current regimen has her fairly stable, I’m essentially her caregiver. There are things regarding chores and household maintenance things that we can’t agree on how to get them done, or the timeline in which they are done. I don’t want to go into detail with everything (I feel like I’m frustrated and raw, we just argued again, and I don’t want to just blame her or throw her under the bus). But I feel like communicating with her right now is like communicating with a brick wall, and I’m at my limit. I also am trying to coordinate a home health aide to check in with her for a few hours a day when I’m working, but that is also a slow process because she doesn’t want people in the house. It’s a fight.

Is it possible to find a therapist to help mediate between a caregiver/patient who is daughter/mother? She doesn’t have dementia, her faculties are intact. I need someone to mediate, maybe someone to help me better approach how to discuss this stuff with her, and maybe an objective third party to get through to her.

For what it’s worth, I will read these comments tomorrow. I’m a baker by trade and get up early for work (3am, I’m in EST zone), so I’m going to bed. But any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Favorite Happy Hour Spots?

Hi! I just started a new job (YAY), and in an effort to get out of the house more to meet some more people, I want to find where some of y’all’s favorite happy hour spots are! My new job is as a baker; my hours are weird (5am-1pm lol). But from time to time, I’d love to hit up a happy hour after a shower and a nap!

What are your favorite spots? This can be because of the food/drinks, the vibes, the staff, the deals, you name it. I like various liquors, beers, and wines, and love trying new stuff. Hit me with your faves!

Frog ID?? Frog poops??

I do not personally have a lot of experience with frogs. But I moved in with my mother to help her out - she lives in the panhandle of West Virginia, USA. The last couple of years we have so many little frogs that hang around her house!

My questions:
1.) does anyone know what kind of frogs these might be?
2.) any general tips to keep them happy/safe without meddling with them? My mom told me to put some old bowls out and prop them up places to help create some shade/shelter for them, but I wasn’t sure about setting out water, or anything else…
3.) do frogs typically have big poops??? lol I’ve noticed almost like deformed tootsie roll type things on our deck and front porch, and they’re always around where I typically see the frogs. But they’re so big and the frogs are so small 🤣

I grew up near the city, I’ve obviously seen frogs before but not this many and I am not as closely acquainted with their existence. And their poops. I am fascinated lmao

See pictured. Thanks for the help and any info 🐸

I need help with blouses!

Hello! So I’m (34F) starting a new job this week - it’s a serving position at a British tea house & catering company. They have a specific uniform for the servers (attached is a screenshot of the email from the onboarding person). I either have or know what I want to buy for everything… except the shirt.

I never wear long sleeve button down shirts. Ever. I have no idea where to buy them - let alone with the color/pattern they want/need. I’ve worked food service jobs before but this is the first serving gig where I’ve had a more specific uniform because it’s kind of considered “fine dining” due to the experience they offer.

Any recommendations… I would appreciate. Preferably today, and something I can get shipped to me before Thursday 🤪🤪🤪🤪 (or a department store you’ve had luck buying such things at that are comfortable lol)

I’m US, size 3x/4x, 24/26 (depending on style/fit).

Entering the restaurant industry late (AKA… am I stupid?)

Alright. So. I’m here for brutal honesty.

I have always loved cooking. I have also always loved serving people/working with people. I thrive in high-stress and teamwork environments - I come from fifteen years of healthcare experience, much of which was emergency/urgent care. I also have worked part-time as a server/barback when I was in my 20’s… I am now 34.

I left healthcare in the last year due to burnout, and my mom’s health issues/becoming her caregiver. I’ll spare you from what all I’ve explored in terms of a career shift, but I’m just not cut out for an office job. I like jobs where I work with people and work with my hands, and I like to have fun (even if the work is insanely hard).

I’ve started applying to dishwasher/prep cook/kitchen assistant positions. I have already scored an interview for next week! Part of me is looking into a job like this for more flexibility than a 9-5 m-f for my mom’s appointments. I am no stranger to working weekends, nights, and holidays - in fact, I’m fine with it. But other than wanting to learn new skills and try something new, I don’t have “career aspirations” (at least not yet) to be a chef or own my own restaurant. I admittedly just want a job where I can do what I described already - work with my hands, be on the move, and (most days) have fun. And to just make money… I don’t care about it being a lot of money.

Am I dumb or crazy for doing this? Did anyone else get into this industry “later?” Aside from being a rockstar EMT/MA, and generally being a people person, cooking is one of the other few skillsets I feel like I have that I can maybe expand and capitalize on. I do have a real passion for trying my hand at traditional dishes from other cultures (I’m in the U.S. if that matters), but I’m really interested in just getting in a kitchen to start learning the basics.

Any tips, stories… harsh judgements… guidance, etc., are appreciated :)

A little confusion… but open minded/hearted!

I think this individual may have thought this section was asking what ethnicity they might be looking for… rather than what ethnicity they are. I don’t know if anyone else would get a giggle out of this, but I did 😂

Direct is best?

No fluff. Straight to the point. I can appreciate it. But my profile was active for all of thirty minutes when I received this message lol

Mind you, my profile also says I (34F) have no interest in marriage.

Welcome back to online dating I guess 🤪

Dating but independent?

This may be a really simple or stupid question, but I don’t really have any friends that I can bounce this concept off of (all of my lovely friends are married with families).

How do you go about dating with the end goal of either living in your own separate dwellings, or at MOST having separate bedrooms if you live together down the line? I’m in my mid 30’s(F), bi/pan (exploring that). And understandably, I’m at an age where if someone isn’t settled down yet, many want to be married soon and starting families. I’m childfree by choice, and while marriage isn’t entirely off the table I really don’t have a pressing desire to be married.

Without divulging my whole life story, I’ve sacrificed a great deal of my life and time for others I’ve cared about, at the expense of my own peace and sanity. I’m at a point where I’m starting over financially, and trying to figure out school/career. But I am much more grounded in who I am as a person, and subsequently, what I want out of my life. I want love and companionship that is dedicated and monogamous but it is really important to me that we are still our own people. Like we enjoy date nights and texting/calling and sharing our accomplishments and struggles and have intimacy, but we are still our own people with our own space. I’m also pretty sure I want entirely separate finances, for my protection and for theirs, save maybe a savings account we contribute to for trips or some other common goal.

How do I phrase what I want? “Commitment without settling down?” I’m prone to being very forward when I’m getting to know someone new, so I don’t want to lead them on and waste their time. I just don’t know what to call it.

Editing Resume

I’m currently revamping my resume to tailor it to (ideally) remote customer service positions. My fifteen years of work experience varies between clinical healthcare and restaurant/sales, but my overarching theme that I want to capitalize on is customer service. I love working with people/helping people, and I have strong communication skills (written and spoken).

For anyone that currently hires for such positions, or anyone that has successfully been hired for such a position:

- what key words specifically do you or ATS look for/what did you use?
- are descriptions under each job role necessary?
- is one page still standard?
- is education worth including? I have my bachelors and am currently pursuing my masters remotely but I don’t want to include that if it will hurt me, I just want to work.

I moved away from an urban area to live in a more rural area to help my mother, and finding a decent job where I live is difficult without having specific certifications or experience.

Any help or guidance is appreciated. I am feeling really lost right now.

My Dog Came To Visit :)

So, obviously when it rains in game, domestic animals typically stay inside the farmer’s house. But for some reason, I found a dog outside today.

In real life, I had a dog named Sampson. We had to put him to sleep last year. Sampson LOVED the rain. It would be impossible to get him back inside when it did.

In the game I adopted cats and dogs and named them after pets I have/had in real life. This is the one I named Sampson.

Sampson was out in the rain. Our big boy came to visit (he was a lab-mastiff mix).

Don’t mind me, tearing up over a video game 🥲🥹

(If this happens frequently to everyone else, I don’t wanna know about it, I’m just choosing to believe my boy came to visit me today)

Does this little fenced in area have a purpose?

Edit: **THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS**
Thank you to everyone who commented!! I figured it out before spoilers started rolling in, but I loved all the comments regardless of spoilers or not. This is probably my favorite subreddit. Hope y’all have a good day ❤️

——————————————————————————

Is there any purpose to going in this little fenced in area? I know there’s a little path opposite of it/to the right, but I just realized I could get in here. But I can’t interact with anything and I never find anything. Playing on Switch.

I can tell when you’re using A.I. to message me on a dating app (34F).

Just downloaded Hinge today… I see so many good reviews on it compared to other apps, and I haven’t consciously dated in a long time, so I just wanted to see who I’d match and chat with. I’d received several likes and matches pretty quickly. Matched with a guy that had a really good profile with good pictures. Handsome, and we seemed to have similar interests. But after a few messages, it was obvious he used ChatGPT or something similar to respond. The cadence was too robotic and polished, and he seemed to respond too quickly (like one would if they copy/pasted). I asked him point blank if he used it. He said “Nope. I just write alot” (yes, spelled ‘alot’). The couple of responses after were short with various grammatical errors or misspellings, and they just read completely differently than his previous messages. The conversation fizzled out.

While proper grammar and spelling is hot (to me), I generally can roll with someone who may not be the strongest writer if the conversation topic itself flows well and they’re sincere. Using A.I. right out of the gate and seemingly lying about it just feels… wrong. Lazy. Talk to me like we’re human. We’re in our 30’s.

This may be a dramatic reaction, but I deleted my profile almost immediately after our conversation ended. I am reminded as to why I haven’t dated in… years.

Please don’t use A.I. to craft your messages to potential dates. It doesn’t sound like you and it’s a charade you can’t keep up if you actually think you want to get to know or build with the person.
