I’ve been looking at iconic German football moments lately, and it made me wonder what an HSV version would look like.

I’m working on a small visual football heritage project: famous goals shown as minimalist tactical posters — with the scoreline, minute, location, and the story behind the moment.

As an example, I’ve made four posters about Germany’s World Cup finals: 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014.

But for a club like HSV, with so much history, I’d rather ask the people who actually care about the club:

If you could choose just three goals or match moments that best represent HSV, which ones would they be?

They don’t have to be the most beautiful goals. I’m more interested in the moments that still mean something to fans: European glory, title-winning moments, derby drama, promotion heartbreak or redemption, last-minute madness, Volkspark nights, pure chaos — anything that truly feels like HSV.

If possible, I’d love to know:

• the match
• the year
• the goalscorer / moment
• why it belongs in your top 3

I’d much rather hear this from actual HSV supporters than just pick moments from a generic “best goals” list.

ich beschäftige mich gerade mit ikonischen deutschen Fußballmomenten — und dabei habe ich mich gefragt, wie eigentlich eine Mainz-05-Version aussehen würde.

Ich arbeite an einer kleinen visuellen Fußball-Heritage-Reihe: berühmte Tore als minimalistische taktische Poster — mit Spielstand, Minute, Ort und der Geschichte hinter dem Moment.

Als Beispiel habe ich vier Poster zu deutschen WM-Finals gestaltet: 1954, 1974, 1990 und 2014.

Aber bei einem Verein wie Mainz 05 würde ich lieber die Menschen fragen, die den Verein wirklich fühlen:

Wenn ihr nur drei Tore oder Spielmomente auswählen dürftet, die Mainz 05 am besten repräsentieren — welche wären das?

Es müssen nicht unbedingt die schönsten Tore sein. Eher die Momente, die bis heute etwas auslösen: Aufstieg, Klassenerhalt, Europapokal, Last-Minute-Wahnsinn, Derby, große Außenseiter-Siege, pure Emotion — alles zählt, solange es sich wirklich nach Mainz 05 anfühlt.

Wenn möglich, schreibt gern dazu:

• welches Spiel
• welches Jahr
• welcher Torschütze / welcher Moment
• warum genau dieser Moment in eure Top 3 gehört

Ich möchte das lieber von echten Mainz-Fans hören als aus irgendeiner generischen „beste Tore“-Liste übernehmen.

You were genuinely really helpful, and the answers made one thing clear: football fans don’t just remember goals — they remember the whole feeling around them.

The bigger idea behind it is this: each poster would sit above a small speaker, and when you press play, you hear the original match commentary. BBC, Sky and ITV have agreed to the use of the audio, which still feels a bit unreal to me.

Before I take this any further, I’d really love some honest feedback:

• Do these designs work for Manchester City and England fans?
• Are the moments clear enough from the images?
• Does the minimalist approach do the emotion justice?
• And what do you think of the colours?

Vor drei Monaten habe ich auf Reddit gefragt, was eure absoluten Lieblingsmomente des FC Bayern und der deutschen Nationalmannschaft sind.

Ihr wart wirklich unglaublich hilfreich — und die Antworten haben mir vor allem eines gezeigt: Fußballfans erinnern sich nicht nur an Tore, sondern an das ganze Gefühl drumherum.

Seitdem habe ich angefangen, ein paar dieser Momente in minimalistische Poster zu übersetzen. Die Idee war, die Emotion des Moments einzufangen, ohne das Design zu wörtlich oder zu überladen zu machen.

Die größere Idee dahinter ist: Jedes Poster würde über einem kleinen Lautsprecher hängen, und wenn man auf „Play“ drückt, hört man den originalen Spielkommentar. ZDF, ARD und NDR haben der Nutzung des Audios zugestimmt, was sich für mich immer noch ein bisschen unwirklich anfühlt.

Bevor ich das weiterverfolge, würde ich mich sehr über ehrliches Feedback freuen:

• Funktionieren diese Designs für Bayern- und Deutschland-Fans?
• Sind die Momente anhand der Bilder klar genug?
• Wird der minimalistische Ansatz der Emotion gerecht?
• Und was haltet ihr von den Farben?

One important note: I’ll remove the word “Liverpool” from the poster, as I don’t have a licence to use it.

Because I believe Ireland should be at every World Cup — and because Irish football moments somehow always seem to come with ridiculous amounts of emotion…

A while ago, I asked Irish football fans what their all-time favourite Republic of Ireland moments were.

The answers were pretty clear: Houghton in 1988, Houghton in 1994, and Keane in 2002.

I’ve been working on a series of minimalist posters based on those moments — trying to capture the instant itself without making them too literal or too busy.

The idea is that each poster would sit above a small speaker: press play, and you hear the original match commentary. RTÉ has agreed to the use of the audio, which is pretty surreal.

But before I take this any further, I’d really value your honest opinion:

Are these moments recognisable from the images alone?
Do they feel “Irish” enough without using the obvious clichés?
And what do you think of the minimalist colours?
