why i can't make clean sounds and how i am supposed to do those percussion/tap sounds at the end of strokes like other cool people on this subreddit?
so i am trying to learn banjo completely from youtube videos(no banjo teachers exist at where i live). i started with bluegrass but after many people claiming clawhammer is better for beginners i am trying to learn both of them. however i progress much faster with bluegrass than clawhammer. i have a couple questions for anyone who can spare some time;
note: i normally play piano, banjo is my first experience with stringed instruments.
i can play cripple creek with picks/bluegrass but fail to play it when i try to do it bareback(clawhammer). i use the same tab so do i need to find a clawhammer cripple creek tab? does tabs change that much between styles?
people manage to make very clean/no buzz sounds, my strokes are inconsistent and sometimes produce buzzing sounds, how i can fix it? i watched jim pankey and try to replicate his hand movement but i have no idea whether my way is right or wrong. i asked a few guitar tutors about hitting the strings with the back of nails but what they show me is very different than what people do in clawhammer banjo tutorials
i am going mad over people doing those percussion/tap/drum sounds they make when playing clawhammer. i love that mixed, a bit chaltic sound but i can do that only when i am hitting 1st string. how you guys manage to do that with all the strings? i hit all strings when i try to do that when i am not supposed to.
should i completely drop trying to learn both the methods at the same time and focus on bluegrass first?
