We asked people in Durango how patriotic they were feeling on the Fourth of July

Durango’s Fourth of July carried many undertones on Saturday: The day marked the United States’ 250th anniversary following Colorado’s primary elections. Fires were raging across Southwest Colorado, many people were reeling from economic stress, and national politics remain deeply divisive.

Ferris Fire crosses Dolores River Canyon, prompting further evacuations

The Ferris Fire swept through Dolores River Canyon Friday afternoon, an outcome firefighters both feared and anticipated as the blaze 15 miles northwest of Dolores encroached on the narrow gap bordering residences.

Keith Keesling, emergency manager for Dolores County, said about a dozen homes on the west side of the canyon were issued evacuation orders. Keesling said there are about 30 homes to the south of the evacuation area under pre-evacuation orders. Glade Ranch residents, most of whom don’t live in those homes year-round, were issued evacuation orders Saturday.

Glade Ranch was evacuated Saturday while Zone 8, bordering the Dolores River Canyon, received evacuation orders Friday afternoon. Zone 7 residents, just south of Zone 8, are under pre-evacuation orders, meaning they should be ready to leave once notified. (Dolores County Office of Emergency Management)

Evacuated residents were directed to Pleasant View Fire Department to seek shelter.

As of Friday afternoon, the Ferris Fire, ignited by a series of lightning strikes Saturday, had scorched 33,248 acres, continuing a push northward parallel to Forest Service Road 240, said Abraham Proffitt, spokesperson for the San Juan National Forest. The fire broke through the Dolores River Canyon, spreading across the west side, presenting a barrier for crews working to beat back the blaze.

“We can’t put firefighters in the canyon and we can’t have aircraft flying into the canyon either. They have to stay above that,” Proffitt said. “It makes it very challenging to fight the fire when it’s in the canyon.”

Communities around Colorado cancel fireworks shows due to ongoing wildfires

Communities around Colorado have cancelled Fourth of July fireworks shows due to ongoing wildfires and fire restrictions.

According to the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, there are 15 wildfires burning in the state right now.

The wildfires and fire restrictions in other Western Slope towns and counties such as Garfield, Eagle, Summit, Routt, Pitkin and La Plata have either made adjustments or cancelled the fireworks display portion of their Fourth of July festivities altogether.

“We want to be proactive given the existing conditions and forecast and pivot to invest in a Fourth of July Celebration that’s predictable, sustainable, and evolving with our community,” said Eric Bulrice, Durango community events supervisor in a statement on the City of Durango’s website. “Other Colorado communities like Aspen, Thornton, Denver, Longmont, Boulder and Castle Rock are also shifting away from traditional fireworks as wildfire and environmental considerations reshape July 4 celebrations.”

The City of Fruita is one of those cities. It has joined Denver and Lakewood in opting for drone shows instead of fireworks this year. The City of Boulder permanently did away with fireworks and drones altogether in 2024. But other Boulder County towns such as Longmont, Erie, and Louisville have continued their respective traditions.

2026 Colorado Wildfire Tracker

Other cities that have cancelled their Fourth of July fireworks displays include Ouray, Rangley, Alamosa, Montrose, Steamboat Lake, Cripple Creek, Yampa, and Woodland Park. Pueblo West’s show and one planned in Custer County have been postponed.

“One of the hardest parts of serving a mountain community is knowing that sometimes the safest decision isn't the most popular one,” the City of Woodland Park released in a statement. “After careful evaluation of current wildfire and environmental conditions, and with the support of NETCO professionals, the City has made the difficult decision to cancel this year's Fourth of July fireworks display.”

Various stages of fire restrictions have also prohibited personal use of fireworks. But fireworks displays within the town will go on. For example, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department placed Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on residents Monday. But the Town of Castle Rock is moving forward with its Fourth of July fireworks display.

Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, and both cities are prohibiting the sale of fireworks, but at this time, professional fireworks shows are still scheduled weather permitting.

“The firework shows are way safer than individuals using fireworks on their own,” said Colorado Springs Fire Chief Randy Royal during a press conference on Tuesday.

He said they’ll be monitoring the weather. “If we get to Saturday and it looks like we are going to have red flag warnings, then we will pull the plug on those firework shows.”

Royal said he’d hoped for a county or statewide ban on the sale of fireworks, which has not happened. He noted that there are fireworks for sale in areas that appear to be part of the city but are actually enclaves where the city does not have jurisdiction.

Despite restrictions in most of the state, the Denver metro area has a full slate of fireworks and drones for the Fourth of July weekend.

Stage 2 fire restrictions are also in place on public lands around the state, including Rocky Mountain National Park, the Pike San Isabel National Forest, areas administered by Bureau of Land Management field offices in Kremmling, Grand Junction, San Luis Valley, Royal Gorge and Colorado River Valley. The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland are under Stage 1 restrictions, with Stage 2 implemented in the Sulphur Ranger District.

Many counties have also instituted Stage 2 fire bans, among them are Las Animas, Custer, Huerfano, Saguache, Fremont, Chaffee, El Paso, Pueblo, while others have less strict Stage 1 bans. A handful of counties on the Eastern Plains are not currently reporting restrictions.

Stage 2 fire restrictions mean open flames, including campfires and charcoal grills, fireworks and smoking outside are prohibited. Gas grills, chainsaws and other potentially spark-producing devices must have emergency shut-off switches and other safety features, and can be operated only in areas where flammable materials have been removed.

Ferris Fire grows to 10,000 acres, evacuations expanded to include private lands

Fires that started Saturday in the San Juan National Forest northeast of Pleasant View had grown to more than 10,000 acres with zero containment as of Sunday, forcing further evacuations and requiring structure protection amid extreme fire and weather conditions.

The Ferris Fire and Far Draw Fire, which merged, and the Doe Canyon Fire were collectively being referred to as the Ferris Fire. The fires, which are thought to have been caused by dry lightening, started in the Glade area near Narraguinnep Canyon, north of Dolores and on San Juan National Forest.

Evacuation orders were issued Sunday for private land inholdings north of Glade Ranches. The Glade Ranch subdivision were in “Go” status. The evacuation area did not include Disappointment Road.

According to the Forest Service, the Glade Ranch subdivision is fully evacuated.

Albuquerque airport, lost key in long term parking. What should I expect?

Flew out last week to Seattle. Wallet was stolen out of backpack, didn't realize until I returned last night (at 2am) that they also got my only key for my 2024 4Runner TRD Pro.

I live 200 miles away in a small town. This was my only key. Vehicle is in long term parking at the airport.

I will be calling local Toyota dealer as soon as they open.

What should I expect here? Expensive? Anything I can do now before I call?

Edit: I do have my VIN, drivers license, and a pic of my registration on my phone.

City of Durango grants The Garage three months to resolve sales taxes delinquency

The Garage bar owner Jennifer Kelley said after a business license hearing this week her establishment at 121 W. Eighth St. remains open and isn’t closing anytime soon.

The city had demanded Kelley attend a show cause hearing Wednesday to explain why her business license should not be suspended or revoked because of failure to remit approximately $20,000 in delinquent sales taxes.

Kelley made her case and agreed to pay more than $11,700 in delinquent sales taxes to the city by mid-September.

SkyWest Airlines Flight SKW5817, a Canadair Regional Jet CRJ-200 to Durango Diverts Back to Farmington Four Corners Regional Airport,United States: What Happened in the Air

Sorry for the crap article, but I did think it was interesting...

Aviation routing data patterns from systems such as FlightAware show that Durango-La Plata County Airport is highly sensitive to rapid weather shifts due to its high-altitude terrain and surrounding mountain geography, which can create sudden visibility reductions and unstable approach conditions. In this case, the decision to divert to Farmington suggests that landing conditions at Durango likely fell below safe operational thresholds or required reassessment during final approach preparation.

Although the flight was initially tracked as proceeding toward Durango, there is no confirmed evidence of an onboard emergency such as engine failure or pressurisation issues, placing the event within the category of a precautionary diversion. SkyWest Airlines, operating under strict Federal Aviation Administration oversight, routinely trains crews to prioritise alternate airport landings when mountain-airport safety margins become marginal or unpredictable.
