Squirrels

Does anyone have good advice for keeping squirrels away? I don’t have a huge garden or anything, just some strawberry plants in a stackable planter on my porch. They weren’t doing well early on so I put them in new soil and they finally recovered but every time they start to look good the squirrels come in and wreak havoc. They’ve ripped entire plants out of my planter. I’ve had to repot and replant the surviving ones multiple times now and I’ve already spent way too much money on these plants for what I’ll ever get out of them lol!

I read about using cayenne and garlic but I don’t want to repel the bees. A chicken wire cage seems like overkill but I’m open to it now if it’s my only option. I figured I’d check in and see if any of you have good suggestions/ideas?Thanks!

Anyone have a good large breed non-elevated outdoor dog bed recommendation?

My lab is very much a senior and he already has the k&h elevated bed but I often find him lying on the hard patio next to it. It’s becoming very tough on his joints.

He’s an indoor dog but he really enjoys lounging in the sun. It rains a few days throughout the summer so I also want something that won’t get waterlogged.

I’ve been googling but a lot of the waterproof options don’t look that good, like super thin crate pads that won’t help his joints much or memory foam which seems like it would be too hot for a lab. I figured someone on here might have a good recommendation? Thanks!

Why are the seeds so huge on my strawberries?

Is this normal? I feel like the seeds are huge. I assumed they’d grow more but they started looking worse as I left them, not better so I finally picked them. This is the second set of berries on the plant this year and all of them have looked like this.

Is it dangerous to put cold water on a dog in a Heatwave?

Male, Labrador, Oregon, 80 lbs

It’s 96 degrees and I live in a condo. I had to walk my dog just until he pooped and then we immediately went home. We were outside for about 5 minutes total.

Anyways, I had a water bottle full of ice water that I took. He was panting so i poured some water on him. He got really excited and wanted to run home when I did that.

But now I’m reading that it’s extremely dangerous to pour ice water on a dog? I had no clue. He seems ok but is this actually true and is there anything I should watch for?

Wildfire smoke using a dual hose AC

I have a dual hose portable AC unit and it’s going to be 100 degrees for the next 3 days. I’m extremely sensitive to wildlife smoke and the air quality is going to be pretty bad. Not running it isn’t an option because my dog needs to stay cool.

I’m not very familiar with these units and how they work. Do they bring the outside air in? Is there anything more I can do apart from sealing up any air gaps in the window? Thanks!

Not my post - wanted to spread the word about this poor dog 😭

I wish I could take him! This is terrible. If anyone can take this pup plz contact MCAS immediately. This breed is great but they don’t do well in a shelter environment. I can’t believe MCAS is so quick to want to euthanize due to shelter behavior, especially on the week of Fourth of July.

Edit: The case number in the screenshot may or may not be correct. Please reference that number AND number 397915 if you call about this dog. Or describe it and hopefully they’ll figure out which one. Thanks!

Second edit: also possible he may be listed as a Siberian husky at the shelter. If anyone has an update PLEASE leave a comment. If I hear anything I’ll update this post.

A question about crow behavior

So there are several crows I feed daily but for a few days now there’s one that sits in the grass with its wings out and beak open. Sort of like the sunbathing behavior. The thing that confuses me is this crow does it for several hours everyday. It’s also in a shaded area so I’m assuming it’s not sunbathing? I’ll try to get a photo tomorrow.

I walked up to it today but it seemed angry (who knows if it was but the sound it made was different than what I’m used to hearing so I’m assuming it wasn’t happy) and it flew away when I got kind of close. It looked exhausted when it flew up in the tree so I felt really bad for walking towards it. The weather for the last few days was in the 70s and today the high was 80, so it hasn’t been very hot. Is there anything I can do? Put water out? Or just leave it be? Does anyone know why a crow would do this?

Has grocery store coffee gone downhill?

A question for fellow coffee drinkers who always buy whole beans and drink their coffee black… What’s going on with grocery store coffee beans? I’m curious if I’m the only one who has noticed this, but grocery store coffee sucks! There used to be decent options that were always good in a pinch. Even Pete’s used to be good, but I’d say it’s on par with Starbucks now.

And yes, I DO buy coffee from local roasters but I don’t always have the time to make it to the coffee shop to buy beans.

I even went to new seasons to find some and they didn’t have much as far as whole bean coffee goes. Mostly a bunch of brands from central Oregon and dark roasts. Don’t get me started on how the trendy overpriced coffee from central Oregon is always burnt and sold at a premium price. Maybe the elevation screws up their taste buds, idk.. /s

Did coffee go downhill or is it just me? If you have a good grocery store recommendation I’m all ears. I know this is first world problems, but coffee is my only vice these days. 😆

Thanks!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bug like this. Anyone know what it is?

It looks like a mosquito but it has a black/yellow pattern like a bee and the wings are shaped very much like a house fly (second photo). It landed on my strawberry plant. Shortly after a second one landed.

Question about a main pipe blockage in a condo

I live in a 3 story condo, bottom floor. When the upstairs 2 units run their washers it floods my washer stand pipe. I assumed it had to be a main line clog. They sent a plumber and I told him how the stand pipe floods with soapy water when they run their washers.

He did everything but check the mainline for 3 hours. After that he told me he didn’t see water damage by the pipe so the water couldn’t have come from the stand pipe. Except it did. I pulled out the machines and watched it when it happened. I told him that from the start. He didn’t see damage because I fixed the damage and replaced the floor.

He cleared the mainline after, which was the culprit. Management wants to pin it on me, which sucks because I’m always cautious with drains. It’s also insanely expensive because he didn’t believe me for the first 3 hours.

Is it normal for all of it to fall on me if it’s from a shared line clog or should I push back? I have no issue paying something I owe if I did cause it, but I just don’t think I did.

These yellowish bugs/spiders are all over my strawberry plants. What are they?

I bought some strawberry plants and I only noticed they were in bad condition when I got home. This photo was a few days ago but they’re doing much better now.

Anyways, I’ve been finding these spider-like bugs daily ever since I brought them home. They’re fast moving and very hard to get a decent photo of. Does anyone know what they could be? Thanks!

What kind of fly is this?

This fly landed on my strawberry plant outside. The size is pretty identical to a cluster fly. I don’t recall ever seeing a yellow fly before and I’ve lived here my entire life. Anyone know what kind it is? Just curious. Thanks!

Is this raspberry leaf curl or something else?

A friend gave me some golden raspberry starts and when I got them this one leaf was sort of dry but still green and not discolored in any way. That was about 2 weeks ago and now it looks black like this. The plant has been outside but it has not been exposed to chemicals or fertilizers. Any ideas? None of the other leaves seem to have any issues.

These reddish ants (Oregon) are all over my grow bags. Should I be concerned?

These ants are all over outside. They’re around my grow bags and there’s a bunch inside the bags too. Should I be concerned? If so, what’s the best way to get rid of them?

Thanks!

These ants are all over my tomato and pepper grow bags

Are these harmful? I cracked an egg halfway down in a few of the grow bags prior to planting so I’m sure they’re loving the free buffet.

Will they harm my plants? If so what can I do to get rid of them? Thanks!
