49 day challenge finished!
Yesterday was the last day of my 49 day challenge. I finished! I cleaned the beach every single day and made a short video which I shared on Youtube and Instagram. I noticed a few patterns and wonder if anyone else has noticed anything similar:
- The shorter a short is, the better it does. The most viewed, liked and shared videos were all less than 20 seconds long.
- Background music does not seem to make a difference to the success of the video.
- Lighting made less difference than I expected. People were just as happy to watch me pick up trash on grey, overcast days as golden hour sunset, but perhaps that was just pity watches!
- Some videos got waaaaaay fewer views for no obvious reason. Day 1 got 1055 views, day 2 got 30, day 3 got 1820. They all showed me finding crab sorting crates, carrying / dragging them home and disposing of them responsibly. No idea why day 2 did so badly. Day 48 sat at 0 views for more than 10 hours too, again, no idea why.
- Video scripts which loop round to beginning again did not make a difference in % viewed on Youtube, but they did on Instagram.
- People like songs!
- Videos where I sped up the movement by 4-5x natural speed did better than any other amount of speeding up.
- Videos where I just picked up the litter and said the item number did surprisingly well. No voiceover, no value added, just me counting to e.g. 28 in the voiceover and my hand pulling 28 pieces of plastic out of the sand.
My previous approach to Youtube shorts was to put evergreen videos (like "How long does it take an orange peel to decopose on the beach?") on Youtube and more generic daily trash haul videos on Instagram, but it seems like that might not be necessary.
