Convince me not to buy a Vanagon and 07k swap it.

Couple years back i snagged a pair (87 and 91) of nearly matching Vanagon syncro single knobs. Due to life changes i had to let them go and never got to do much with the project. They were super rusty but after sitting in the vanagon i knew i needed one. I regret having to get rid of them but it was the right decision.

Fast forward to now:

Found out you can put an 07k in one (i suspected this was possible) and now my daily driver dream car is again filling my mind. I would also probably do a subaru transmission for reliability. 2wd.

Biggest question is AC as I have kids and how much rust im going to have to fix (lol).

Convince me not to do this. No seriously.

Context: automotive engineer/I design car parts/built a swapped 1.8T Porsche 924S a few years back front end to end solo minus the tuning. I design and manufacture either local or in house.

How to lift 924/944 Porsche

Link to Document

Additional Notes:

I will leave this open to comments/amendments and the like.

Drawing screenshot is in the images. You can recreate it in Fusion360 hobbyist for FREE with a couple lessons from Youtube University.

NOTE: if you send me a message I can forward you the .step file for the hefty price of 5$. Sending this to your machinist with the above drawing greatly increases the likelihood that you guys stay friends for a long long time. Ask me how I learned that one.

Special Thanks:

David (Onlyaroadtripaway) for inspiring me to take adventures, inspiring this build, giving me the original drawings back in the day and answering my tech support questions over the course of 6 years doing this on top of just being a super dope dude.

Elliott (944Barn) helping me figure out the other details of this lift, referring people to me, and general support.

PeterKaczynski, kbdowner3 and others for letting me use your photos for product images over the years.

Hit me up in the comments with questions either directly or in the comments. If I get around to finishing my website (I know, I know, soon enough) this will be posted in the tech section and I will add links to the parts as well as trusted suppliers who can do one off parts production (support your local small businesses!!!!)

Enjoy the build.

Explore somewhere new.

Live generously.

Never grow up.

Sold my last lift kit. Ever.

Ive been selling lift kits since 2020 in the middle of COVID. Its been an awesome opportunity to equip vehicles across the USA, Europe, and Australia. Sponsored a Radwood build, roadtripped the east coast with it, and had a blast meeting great people.

It has created many awesome opportunities that I will never forget.

The market has changed and Ive gotta change with it.

A fellow from on here picked up my last one on a deep discount during the July Sale and I hope he makes good use of it.

In the next few days ill be making a big post talking about all the secrets, the details of how to do it and posting links to the part drawings and technical documents so you can build one for yourself. The lift was a compilation of guru information from forum members and some trial and error. It was a gift to me and I want to give it back.

Roof racks are still going to be available for now but I dont plan on keeping as much stock as I have in the past as I transition the business to other endeavors.

CheeRS.

The support of the Vdub community is still unmatched.

Got a request to scan a MK4 Jetta Wagon and realized I didn’t actually know anyone locally with one.

Asked around a few local groups and ended up finding someone with one sitting in their yard who was willing to let me come scan it.

The funny part: I had never met this person. He was out of town when I did the scan. We still haven’t actually met.

But regardless, he let some random guy from the internet show up at his house and 3D scan his Jetta Wagon.

Turned out pretty sweet. Really happy with the amount of detail I was able to capture on this one.

Now I’m curious what this scan will get used for.

I do 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and modeling for fun. If you got questions, ask away.

Free 3D scans

Building out my website for my business and I have some 3D scans ill have available for sale (924S/early and late 944/951 or S2 etc.

Id like to add a section of free scans of annoying parts that simply arent cost effective to spend money on but would be easily 3D printed.

Heater levers

Lock rod caps

Door speaker grills

Seat fold button and bezel

Speed and ref sensor for spacing the flywheel

Etc.

What other parts would you guys want?

Ive got the equipment to scan and test parts to verify fit/finish.

Cheaply to buy printed from me or use the free scans available to print your own.

Dont be like me

Check your thermostat to make sure it is operating correctly before you put it in and fill with coolant.

Found out my new thermostat was bad after spending a lot of time trying to bleed or figure out why it wouldnt cool properly.

Recommended training content - TIG

I do rapid prototyping mainly with automotive pieces. 3d printing, 3d scanning, drawing and tolerancing as a service. Built this car and it shows a lot of little bits that ive designed or built over the years.

Expanding my portfolio of skills.

Primeweld 225x (Gen1)

130cf 100% argon tank

Primarily stainless 306 / 0.060"

Need filler rod ( 308? )

Need electrodes (blue ?)

Need setup help on machine settings.

These are non structural lightweight brackets. Primarily doing tack welds. Nothing fancy just need two pieces to be one piece. They mechanically interlock and the tack is just to hold the interlock in place. Some 90 degree welds and some lap.

I am a full time mechanical engineer and have no time to go to trade school (kids, side business, etc).

Help me learn how to TIG effectively and quickly. If you are in or around Greenville SC and teach a class that i can pay you to tutor me please let me know.

Last time I touched a TIG rig was my internship at a race shop 6 years ago. I sucked at it but I tried. Two pieces became one. The electrode was one of the pieces most of the time. I built the whole car above with a flux welder and paid for welding on anything more critical.

TIA

TLDR. Chased a multi-month encoder board recognition error. AP board and HT board replacement fixed it. Multiple easier possible fixes discovered along the way (see below).

A few months ago I posted that my brand new (<100hrs) H2D would not recognize the OFFICIAL BAMBU Labs Encoder Plate.

To clarify: the printer would not recognize the plate and would throw an error. if the error was bypassed it would then complete the calibration successfully.

After multiple parts swaps my issue has finally been fixed (though it may have created another but we will figure that out soon enough)...

Step 1: Remove Protective Film

The vision encoder plate comes from the manufacturer with a very thin and hard to see protective film. this will cause similar errors to the one I was seeing.

Step 2: Ensure Encoder Plate does not have major surface damage.

The encoder calibration is looking at very small QR codes on the surface and counting the distance between specific ones in terms of motor steps. If one of these is destroyed visually it may cause issues.

Step 3: CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN

Clean the cameras

Clean the build plate

Clean printer is a happy printer

At this point you likely have a software or hardware issue.

Step 4: Factory Reset/Factory Recalibration

This may resolve the issue. didnt work for me but ive seen it recommended multiple times.

Step 5: Toolhead Camera Connection

You can pop off the top of the toolhead camera and check the connection on its back.

Step 6: Toolhead Camera Angle Adjustment

If the camera isnt pointing at the build plate it cant read the build plate. there are two small screws holding the camera to the toolhead. loosen them and adjust the angle either towards the front or the back (and then the opposite) to find the center. This is a good place to start and trial different angles.

Step 7: Toolhead Camera Replacement

This is an annoying 1hr task that may fix the issue if the camera is having an internal problem.

Step 8/9: AP Board and HT Board Replacement

These control a number of the power and thinking functions within the toolhead and the printer as a whole. I dont fully understand what each does but this ended up working for me. This was a 4hr procedure and requires customer service to recode your new boards to your printer so it can be rebound to your account.

Feel free to ask questions. if this post gains some traction I can update it with pictures to show each of the steps of my multi-month deep dive with customer service.
