Noise Recs in Washington DC Area this week?

Traveling for work and Im in DC area for the next few days.
Anything worth checking out for noise and experimental stuff?
Short notice and short trip so it’d be super lucky if something lined up.
Shows?
Cool record shops?
Synth gear stores?

I’m in Bethesda, MD but willing to travel anywhere in the area

I’ll be back once a quarter so any resources for planning future trips would be great too!

Experimental drone and noise in Denver?

Visiting some friends in Denver for the week. Wondering if there are any interesting records stores or similar that stock a good collection of experimental music, noise and drone type things that I should check out while I’m here.

New Apartment

This Beocenter was originally owned by my mother in law while she was in college at the University of Chicago. About five years ago I pulled it from storage at her house. It would power on but no record output at the time. I replaced the stylus which got it playing and over the years I’ve slowly tuned it up by replacing speaker cones, refinishing the speaker stands, recapping parts of the board, adjusting the bias, and just this week replaced the belts as the turntable belt finally gave out after this move.

Zine makers and spaces around Boston

Any of you in Boston or know of good zone related spaces/meetups around Boston?

I’ve only ever made a couple of zines but I want to make more. Also looking for places to discover more!

I know about Mice and intend to go this year for sure!

Photo of a tiny folders poem that felt like it qualifies that I found yesterday at Faro Cafe

My little zine library

Recently moved into a new place in Boston. Decided to showcase some zines as decoration. The plan is we will cycle through various zines as we make/acquire new ones. This is in a wall next to the sofa so guests can easily grab one and peruse

Loops with Vice-Versa

Eliane Radigue's piece Vice Versa was originally a single reel of magnetic tape with the handwritten instructions:

"Stereo tape - 2 tracks
The piece can be played:
• Track 1 separately
• Track 2 separately
• Tracks 1 & 2, simultaneously"

When Important Records released a CD of this expanded on this by providing two discs. One with the two tracks at four different speeds, and one with the two tracks. In reverse at those different speeds. An additional comment of:
"This will allow dedicated listeners to experiment with simultaneous playback of the work's different versions, recreating the conditions of the original installations"

I took note of this and decided to do my own take. I first recorded the regular speed tracks to a tape reel approximately matching the one the originals were recorded on. Then I recorded that to endless loop tapes at the various speeds. Here you can see me dubbing the final loop tape and performing with all of the speeds in symphony.

Looking for more releases like this

I’m not sure if there is a name for this style of work , but for a long time been enamored by things like Elaine Radigue’s Vice Versa and Chry-ptus which invite the listener to participate in the experience by playing back tracks simultaneously at various offsets, speeds, etc.

I’m definitely the “dedicated listener” the Vice Versa booklet mentions. I’ve recorded various pieces of the different speed/direction tracks from the CD release to tape loops and created my own listening experience/performance of the piece many times.

Recently I came across a more noise focused work called Cardboard 3 by Nautical Almanac and snap purchased it from Discogs.

Cardboard 3 contains an over cut vinyl, a tape loop, and a mini CDr. As well as instructions to:

“PLAY ALL 3 TOGETHER AND MAKE YOUR OWN RECORDING WITH THESE.

SEND BACK MATERIAL/RESULTS/INTERPITATIONS TO HERESEE

MUTATIONS WILL CONTINUE LIFE IN UPCOMING FORMS IN HERESEE CATALOG”

Anyway, I’ve really loved interacting with this piece over the last 24 hrs and now I’m actively looking for other works like this. I planning to develop some pieces like this myself in the coming weeks so the more reference points I can pull ideas from the better!

Thanks!

Otari 5050 overheating?

You may have seen a previous couple of posts I made about a problematic Otari 5050 I purchased that was then replaced by the seller in an attempt to make it right. Well, now I have a functional machine that I am very excited about.

However, in the last couple of days I’ve noticed something, about halfway through a reel, the tension arms start occasionally waving and relays start to clatter. I’ve attached a video.

As it continues to play it becomes more and mor constant clicking of relays and waving of tension arms. I noticed that the motor on the take up side is yute warm to the touch. The supply side not so much.

If I turn the machine off and wait until the motor no longer feels warm, and start it back up then it will continue to play with no issue until the end of the tape.

This leads me to think something is causing the machine to overheat.

I’ve done some digging online but not found and helpful information about this specific issue.

Has anyone here encountered something similar? I’m just wondering where to start looking for the cause of this.

MicroFreak with vintage analog gear and a tiny bit of eurorack

https://youtu.be/VmCOK_9BP1I?si=JkyeyGALn0yzuw3R

I've been working on restoring a Teac Model 5 mixing desk with the Model 5 EX expander. Finished up cleaning all of the channels and the external housing so I wanted to put it through some paces to get a better understanding of signal flows within it.

Here I'm using MicroFreak as a source of pad sounds that are being arpeggiated at different time divisions. The echo send goes to two delay routes. The first is straight to my Marantz PMD430 for short slap back type delay. The second goes first through Venus Instruments Veno-Echo for longer Frippertronics length delay, which then goes into the second chanel of the Marantz. Both outputs are fed into separate channel strips on the mixer with their own feedback being controlled via that channels echo send knob.

Not really any sort of polished piece, or performance, just messing around with routing and settings. One thing I think I learned is I need a compressor for the inputs because some parts of the pads a different frequencies definitely take over unexpectedly.

I’m planning out building a bit of an experimental sound studio in my new place in Boston, MA.
First step was an analog mixing desk to serve as the centerpiece. I came across this Teac Model 5 with expander, outboard EQ, Submixer, patchbay, and desk locally for a good price and jumped on it.

The last two photos are how it came to me. You can’t really see but it was gunked up and sticky. My guess is years in a smoking environment because it felt like a similar residue to the inside of a smoker’s car. Plus previous owner had painted the side plated black and red.

I dissected everything. Scrubbed it, cleaned electronics with deoxit, and removed that old paint. Every function works smoothly now! Currently working through calibration with the manual I had printed.

So far I’ve only finished the main board. Expander will come next.

The beginning plan is to integrate with my euro rack and Marantz cassette decks followed by a couple of Reel to Reels set up similar to Hainbach’s Miniature Analog Experimetal Studio Video

And here is a video using it alone as a no-input instrument.

I’ve been working on restoring this Teac Model 5 for a couple of weeks. Sat down and did a non input recording today. So far I’m absolutely in love with this thing!
