What happened here?

I live in Durham but was in Hillsborough today. We stopped at the Taco Bell on South Churton St and I noticed a taped off road right next to it. I was curious so I looked on Google Maps and see that there used to be an entire collection of shops, etc., behind the Taco Bell/south of the Food Lion. I see that it was there at least as recently as 2018 based on street view.

So what happened here? Was it bought out and demolished to make way for the new development a bit further east? Was there a fire or something? Please help a curious mind!

Dyson V8 powered attachments not working

Hello all, my Dyson V8 has stopped working with the powered attachments. It works fine with attachments such as the crevice tool, including when attached to the wand, but attachments such as the pet hair removal and main brush don't work at all. When I press the trigger, the blue indicator light turns on but nothing happens and the motor doesn't turn on.

I have already tried cleaning various metal contacts to no avail. Any help would be appreciated!

1998 Celsior Gauge Cluster Issue

Before you say it in the comments, YES I am very aware the gauge cluster dying is extremely common in these cars. However, my gauge cluster works sometimes, and all the stuff I see online is regarding it dying outright.

Sometimes it’ll work for the entirety of a 30 minute drive, sometimes it’s nonfunctional when I start the car, but most frequently it’ll work fine for the first 10 minutes or so of a drive and then the gauges will randomly go down to 0/stop working.

Would this still be an issue with the leaky capacitors? Or could it be something else? Thanks y’all

Any good "virtual phone" options (especially ones that could run on the desktop)

I have to use Duo 2FA for work and hate having to go grab my phone just to authenticate it (I avoid having my phone near me while working because I can't trust myself lol). A bit ago, I created a Google Voice number so I could get around this issue on a Chromebox I used at work by sending the authentication text, going into Google Voice in a different browser, and entering the code.

Now obviously I could just go into a separate browser and do the same thing I just described, but I was wondering if there's a better way to do this. I was thinking of a virtual "phone" that sits on the desktop and has Google Voice as an "app." Alternatively, some sort of desktop widget that simply receives/displays the Google Voice messages would be great, too.

I am running KDE Plasma. Also, please don't say KDE Connect. I've tried that but it is pretty limited with an iPhone (fuck you Apple).

Why is my Cat Palm leaning like this?

I repotted this cat palm a few weeks ago from the plastic pot it came in (prob have had it a total of 4 months). So far it has been doing decently but it has recently started to lean super far to one side…what is going on here?? It has sent up some new fronds since the repotting. The plant is falling generally toward the source of light

I use a moisture meter to determine when to water; since it is outside rn that usually means every 4-5 days (Zone 7b/8a). It gets a few hours of direct sunlight each day but my house doesn’t get great natural light due to being near some woods/tall trees. When I repotted it I used some compost, Happy Frog potting soil, a bit of mulch for drainage and a tiny bit if monstera I had left over, also for drainage.

Any help would be great! I have killed every other palm I’ve had 😐

Still the best thing they’ve put out (and the far superior mix of these songs)

Also shoutout Soulseek for having this when it’s been otherwise scrubbed from the internet ✌️

Any way to make the UI more basic?

First, I’ll preface this by saying that I should’ve researched this TV more before buying, that’s on me, but most brands seem to be similar…

I bought an LG OLED recently (C3? The cheapest one) and I love the picture and everything, but I loathe the user interface. No, I don’t need a pointer that miscalibrates every two seconds. No, I don’t need 2/3 of the input screen to be a Smart Hub thing…

Is there any way to make this TV dumber? I already don’t have it connected to the Internet. I just want to be able to switch inputs by pressing the input button a few times like TVs of old.

Landscaping consulting in Durham/general Triangle?

I am planning on completely revamping my front and back yard and I have a lot of questions regarding soil quality, what would/wouldn't work well, etc., that a landscaper or similar could answer, but I want to do the actual labor myself. It would be great to simply hire a landscaper to come over and consult about these various questions/problems...does this even exist? I'm worried that if I hire just a regular old landscaper they would try to upsell me on them doing the labor.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Linux Mint Issues (or is it time for a new distro?)

I recently tried out Linux for the first time with Linux Mint (coming from Windows). I was loving it...until I started using it for work, where I started to run into some issues:

  1. Monitor support: My laptop is 4K and my work monitor is something like 900p. The fact that I can't change the scaling independently on the second monitor is frustrating. I tried switching to Wayland, which worked, but it made certain programs ex. Chrome unusable...

  2. Custom shortcuts: For all Microslop's faults, PowerToys is GREAT. The main feature I used was the custom shortcut creator, and had some helpful ones created for certain characters. I've tried to find a similar solution on Mint and while custom shortcuts can be created, it seems like it's only to open programs...the other options for typing symbols are too long-winded to be especially useful.

  3. Using 2FA with my fingerprint reader: I have to use Duo for work and on Windows, I can use Windows Hello with the fingerprint reader (no Microsoft you may not have a scan of my face...) to login. On Mint I'm stuck using my phone, which just lengthens the process a bit. On this one I think I may just have to deal with it regardless of distro, which is fine.

Curious has any good fixes for these issues or if it's time to try out a new distro! I want to abandon Windows when it becomes more streamlined for my work life to do so.
