My HOA situation in Raleigh is making me want to leave the state completely.

My HOA situation in Raleigh is making me want to leave the state completely.

I know HOAs are bad everywhere, but ours has gotten absolutely insane over the last year. We got a warning letter because our trash can was visible for half a day after pickup. Meanwhile, one neighbor literally has broken furniture sitting outside for weeks, and nobody says anything because they’re friends with the board president.

It sounds small, but it’s honestly become exhausting. Every month, there’s some new fee, rule, or passive-aggressive email. Add that on top of rising costs in Raleigh, and I’m starting to question why I’m even paying this much to feel stressed at my own house.

The funniest part is that we originally moved here because everyone said NC was laid back compared to the Northeast. Maybe that existed 15 years ago, but this area feels nonstop now. Traffic, construction, packed stores, overpriced housing everywhere.

At this point, we’re seriously thinking about leaving for somewhere smaller in Pennsylvania or even back toward upstate New York. I already started talking with Cardinal because I honestly don’t have the energy to deal with open houses and repairs if we decide to go.

Has anyone else hit a point where they realized the area just stopped feeling worth it?

Need a summer clone that doesn't smell like synthetic lemon cleaner

Hey everyone, I’m looking to grab a solid clone for the upcoming hot weather, but I’m struggling to find one that actually smells smooth. It feels like every popular budget freshie starts off with a massive blast of synthetic, harsh citrus that reminds me way too much of dish soap or floor cleaner. I really want something crisp, clean, and refreshing, but with a well-blended opening that doesn't headache-induce for the first 30 minutes.

What is your absolute favorite high-quality summer clone that gets it right from the very first spray?

My neighbors made me want to leave North Carolina for good.

This sounds dramatic, but I genuinely think my neighborhood situation pushed me over the edge mentally. I bought a small house outside Raleigh, thinking the suburbs would be calmer and more family-oriented. Instead, I ended up next to nonstop Airbnb turnover, loud parties every weekend, loose dogs running around, and neighbors calling the HOA on people for stupid things while ignoring actual problems.

The crazy part is how expensive everything still is. You pay premium prices, expecting peace, and somehow still deal with chaos. Then you add the politics, healthcare issues, weak tenant protections, terrible public transit, and I honestly started asking myself what exactly I was paying for.

I recently started taking short trips to places around New Jersey and even Cincinnati because I work remotely and realized I’m not actually tied here anymore. The more I travel, the more NC feels overrated for the cost. I already talked with home buyers because I’m seriously considering selling and starting over somewhere else before prices or taxes get even worse.

If you left NC, where did you end up that actually felt worth it financially and mentally?

Sold our Alaska house during the divorce, and now everything is turning into a mess!

My ex-wife and I sold our house in Alaska earlier this year through a local house buyer because we thought it would make the divorce simpler and faster. At the time, we were both agreeing on everything and just wanted to move on without dragging lawyers and repairs into it. We closed fast, split the money, and I moved out of state, thinking the hard part was over.

Now, suddenly, she’s claiming I pressured her into selling too quickly and keeps bringing up the amount we accepted for the house. Apparently, her family thinks we should’ve listed traditionally and gotten more money. Now lawyers are involved anyway, and I honestly feel like the entire easy solution turned into a bigger disaster later.

Has anyone else had a house sale become part of divorce drama after everything was already done?

I’m planning a move to LA in the next couple of months for a new job, and I’m trying to lock in a place early, so I don’t end up overpaying at the last minute. My budget is tight, so I’m mainly looking for a private room under $1300, but from what I see online, it feels harder than expected.

I found roomster while searching, and it looks decent, but I don’t know if it’s actually worth using or if the listings there are up to date. Has anyone here had real success with it in LA recently?

Where are people actually finding rooms in that price range right now? Are facebook groups still the best option, or is there something cheaper or more reliable? Just trying to find the most realistic way to do this.

the one tech prediction that actually scares me

We always talk about cool futuristic stuff like AI doctors and self-driving cars. But what’s a realistic future technology that genuinely worries you?

Not robots taking over the world kind of scary. More like the small, creeping kind that’s probably already being developed.

Let's say it's the last day, last hours, doom came, nothing to do. You decide to honour the best of humanity by reading a great book. Which would be and why?

I am planning my first trip to LA and Miami next month and really want to try out an electric vehicle while I'm there. However, I'm a bit nervous about the potential challenges related to charging at hotels since many places only have a limited number of chargers for hundreds of guests. I want to avoid spending my vacation sitting in a parking lot waiting for a charging spot or competing with other guests at 2:00 AM. I was looking at Turo and found some interesting options, like a Tesla Model 3 in Miami for $50 a day and a Rivian R1S in LA for around $120. While it seems like a cool way to rent a specific car, I'm not sure if it will alleviate my charging concerns. Do Turo hosts usually provide tips on where to find working fast chargers? Would it be better to look for hotels that offer guaranteed charging, or should I rely on apps like PlugShare to locate charging stations?

Beekeeping has a learning curve, and I imagine a lot of lessons come from experience rather than just reading or watching videos.

If you could start over, what’s one thing you’d do differently from the beginning?
