"A hacker collective pulled down a Flock camera and dumped its data. The files included thousands of videos and logs showing that the device captured 1.6 million images of 50,000 vehicles in 21 days.
The software running on the camera explicitly detects people, something which is typically overlooked in discussions around Flock cameras. When it spots a person, it records where they appear in the image and how confident it is in the detection.
To test what the software could actually see, WIRED extracted the models from the camera’s files and ran them against test images and footage recovered from the device. The models readily detected people, including a selfie of a reporter."

"In a statement released Thursday, sheriff’s officials said an internal audit found “improper and unlawful” use of agency database systems to monitor an individual.
The audit identified irregular activity tied to Detective Brandy Almany, who has been employed with the agency since 2019, the release said.
According to the sheriff’s office, a criminal investigation was opened the same day. Investigators allege Almany circumvented procedures and accessed databases including:
Investigators said the information was sought in connection with the ex-wife of Almany’s husband, and that the searches were not tied to legitimate investigative work.
Officials also alleged Almany created electronic records that falsely indicated the searches were connected to valid sheriff’s office investigations, using unrelated case numbers and false justifications."

"A real-time crime center supervisor in metro Atlanta is accused of using her access to Flock Safety license plate reader data to track her domestic partner.
The Conyers Police Department announced Thursday that Paige Forte, a supervisor in the department’s Real-Time Crime Center, was under investigation for using access to the Flock system to track her partner’s car to see where he was."

As folks across the country demand that their city or county stop using Flock Safety automated license plate readers, Axon (and other companies) are making moves to sign contracts to replace Flock.
The outrage against Flock is real but ending a contract with Flock is just one step in challenging the violence of surveillance and policing.
The problem is bigger than Flock Safety.
The problem is bigger than Axon. The problem is much, much bigger than automated license plate readers.

"Amid debate over technology such as drones and Flock automated license plate readers, Anoka County Sheriff Brad Wise signed a $174,999 pilot program contract, placing it $1 below the threshold requiring County Board review.
Wise said law enforcement chiefs in the county had worked on the proposed contract with Flock since fall 2025 and first brought it to the board in January.
Because the initial cost exceeded Wise’s contracting authority, he had been discussing with the County Board how to begin a pilot project.
“It became clear that national politics was weighing into the discussions regarding drones and license plate readers,” Wise said. “It became clear to me that the only way for this pilot to move forward with a test run was to work for a vendor to operate a contract that I could sign of under $175,000.”
The final contract came in at $174,999."

Here’s the catch.
This contract is only for $3,000 a year and therefore does not require a city council vote. And let’s be honest, this is done by design. If we do nothing, this camera will quietly auto-renew after August 13th for TWO YEARS.
These are questions we want answered:
When this type of technology evolves every month, with new product releases, we need ANYONE who approves this technology to understand what they are approving. What was approved two years ago is not the same product. This is an evolving system being added across the country without input from the public.
This isn’t just a Marietta problem; this is a Cobb County leadership problem hitting every city.
