A simple and low skill way to shrink the waist of dress pants/trousers with side adjusters

I lost some weight and found this video to size down my existing side adjuster dress pants. No sewing machine needed and all the work is hidden, so it's very beginner friendly. All you need is a needle, any colour thread, 2 buttons, a scapel blade and ribbed elastic banding that can fit through the waist channel. It needs to be a pronounced ribbing so that you can slice a slit for the adjuster button and the banding won't rip apart. It took me about an hour to do, and all the work is hidden when worn.

The bunching happens at the sides where the side adjuster is, which is mostly ignorable. The video uses a single elastic band, but my trousers have an after dinner split so I had to use two to hide it. I managed to save on the cost of new trousers + alterations at best, or just waist alterations. The most expensive part of this was the elastic banding, which was $7 AUD for 12 mm × 4 m at my local grocery store.

I will note that this probably only works for 1 size down. Any more will cause excessive bunching.

Is there just less interest in the Perth Royal Show this year?

I haven't been since I was a kid, but I feel like I used to hear about it in some way every year, and this year, basically nothing. Cost of Living plays a major role, but is there anything else?

Wrinkle resistant smart casual pants: 100% Synthetic or coated cotton twill?

I've been regularly wearing Uniqlo Slim Fit Chinos 97% Cotton 3% Elastane, but I'm not too fond of how much they fade towards the edges and wrinkle as I wear it through the week. This post concludes that this is an inherent property of cotton twill, and will occur with more expensive Asket Chinos.

The general consensus in the clothing conscious space is to avoid synthetics when possible because they retain smells and aren’t breathable. I've worn these 100% synthetic Uniqlo heat tech pants during winter for a few years and have really enjoyed them. Breathability hasn't been a concern and I don't experience odour problems. I also don't have any issues with the drape because they have a straight cut and dress up nicely with a cashmere sweater. However, these were specifically made for colder weather, so I'm now looking for something similar in charcoal or stone grey equivalent for Spring/Autumn as a daily pair and I'm considering 2 options.

#Option 1 Bonvale Stretch Chinos Classic Fit 100% Recycled Polyester for $100 AUD

I've gotten ads for these and they look like what I'm after.

#Option 2 Proper Cloth Non-Iron Chinos 97% Cotton 3% Elastane dipped in Non-Iron coating, which comes in a classic fit and is $300 AUD.

  • I've also gotten ads for these, but I don't know if it'll be worth it because:

  • It's still cotton twill, so my issues with edge fading may still occur

  • I don’t know if the breathablility of cotton will be appreciable with a non-iron coating, especially after a few washes

  • It's 3x the price of the Bonvale

Wool trousers would be nice, but I want something machine washable.

What are your favourite places for meat and rice/bread spots close to the CBD?

I'm talking either:

1 part meat 1 part rice

or

2 parts meat, 1 part rice, 1 part some kind of bread

Nothing necessarily upscale, but something that makes you think "dang, this is I need in life?"

I'm done with Eve Audio

I bought a pair of SC207 monitors in 2017 as an upgrade over my JBL 305. I've loved them and they sounded fantastic. However, around 2022, they suddenly stopped working and produced this odd sound in [this video](https://imgur.com/a/hK7iiuX). They were out of warranty and Eve Audio just told me to take it to a speaker repairer. I found a local one and they told me it had something to do with the amp, so be replaced it on both, costing me $1,450 AUD. [Link to my first post when I got them fixed ](https://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/s/P52Qnj86Sf)

They were fine and still sounded great until fairly recently where the exact same problem happened and I am not going to be repairing them to wait another \~5 years of this cycle. I will also note that the monitors failed within weeks of each other.

I'm currently tossing up between Adam TV7 (also ribbons), Yamaha HS7, and JBl 306P monitors. Not interested in passives for this particular setup (desktop + JBl 310 sub)

How would you make a fancier tiramisu?

I'm following the recipe from A Cozy Kitchen, which my friends and I really enjoyed.

#Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 large egg yolks

  • 3 tablespoons dark rum (I subbed in 1 tbsp vanilla paste)

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100 g)

  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

  • 16 oz mascarpone (mine was thick and 40% fat)

  • Coffee/Espresso

  • ladyfingers

Steps

  1. Make sure all ingredients are straight from the fridge to be as cold as possible. Add to stand mixer with paddle attachement and beat for 1 minute. Scrape down sides and beat for another 1 minute. The recipe does not mention what the end point should be.

  2. Dip lady fingers in coffee and make 1 layer. Scoop and spread out half the filling on top. Repeat for 2 layers.

  3. Chill for at least 3 h

  4. Dust with cocoa powder before serving

The only blemish is that it's very scoopable and doesn't keep shape, which is the same consistency as the photos, so it's not so bad but not photogenic. Someone in the comments of the recipe suggested beating the filling for 1 minute then use a whipping attachment and whipping until stiff peaks.

I tried incorporating some interesting ingredients from A Day With Mei's Triple Toasted Vanilla Ice Cream. She used:

  • 30 g toasted skim milk powder

  • 40 g white sugar (as is) and 50 g white sugar melted into caramel

  • 1 toasted vanilla pod

for 350 mL heavy cream + 325 mL whole milk (just under 3 cups of liquid). A Cozy Kitchen used 80 mL heavy cream + 450 g mascarpone (just over 2 cups of very thick liquid), so I foolishly added the 3 toasted ingredients in those in the same quantities. Two problems ensued.

  1. The toasted skim milk powder and caramel absorb moisture, so the filling split and felt a bit grainy.

  2. The caramel flavour was overwhelming on day 1 and settled afterwards. I don't think the toasted vanilla made an appreciable difference compared to the vanilla paste I used. I don't know if I could tell if the milk powder made a meaningful difference compared to the caramel.

I think I could make it work by reducing the milk powder or adding some milk, but I don't think it's worthwhile adding any of these toasted elements when the base recipe was already enjoyable.

I found replacing the cocoa powder with chopped chocolate was more enjoyable. I tried using grated chocolate, but my friends and I preferred the crunch of the chopped chocolate. I could pipe the top layer of filling, but it'll be covered in chopped chocolate, so I don't think it's worth doing.

Maybe I could add condensed milk because I had a really good tiramisu at a bar where the filling was thicker and it reminded me a bit of condensed milk.

Maybe I could add some kind of chocolate decoration on top such as chocolate curls? I thought about an almond tuile, spun sugar, and a pulled caramel ribbon, but I don't think they add enough to the taste to be worth the effort. I've also read that it's not worth making the ladyfingers.

Maybe a thin chocolate ganache layer on top of the 1st or 2nd filling layer and then topping with chopped chocolate. I've read some recipes use marsala wine, rum, or coffee liqueur, but I prefer using vanilla paste.

What are your favourite brands for interesting rings <$1,000 USD?

I've been wearing a Lunar Moth Ring and a Labradorite Scarab Beetle Ring from Marie June for a while now, and even though they’re a bit feminine, I've really enjoyedthem because they’re so unique, while also be so interesting by being more defined and less abstract. I've been really impressed by the work by oorejewelry on Instagram who've popped into my feed, but they seem too feminine and “abstract” for my tastes.
