POV: When the light turns green, how many cars from the right do you let in?

Excuse my scrappy drawing. I always feel like I’m doing something wrong in this scenario no matter what option I choose. Especially if there are tons of cars behind me.

I'm done with Eve Audio

#WARNING EAR SCREECHING SOUND IN VIDEO

I bought a pair of SC207 monitors in 2017 as an upgrade over my JBL 305. I've loved them and they sounded fantastic. However, around 2022, they suddenly stopped working and produced this odd sound in this video. They were out of warranty and Eve Audio just told me to take it to a speaker repairer. I found a local one and they told me it had something to do with the amp, so be replaced it on both, costing me $1,450 AUD. Link to my first post when I got them fixed

They were fine and still sounded great until fairly recently where the exact same problem happened and I am not going to be repairing them to wait another ~5 years of this cycle. I will also note that the monitors failed within weeks of each other.

I'm currently tossing up between Adam TV7 (also ribbons), Yamaha HS7, and JBL 306P monitors. Not interested in passives for this particular setup (desktop + JBl 310 sub). I've grown out of the audiophile mindset for the most part and am happy to stick to monitors in this price range.

I love the name "imaginary numbers"

This is coming from an algebraist. I sort of understand people's issue with it. I understand that the logical leaps to arrive at complex numbers are not that much different than those of negative numbers or rationals. But I guess I just don't really care. I think it is a cool historical artifact that they were not accepted seriously for so long. It makes the name sort of mysterious and magical to me.

"This polynomial has complex roots" 🤢📊🧍‍♂️

"This polynomial has imaginary roots" 🌈😮🦄✨

Got promoted to a corporate position at my company. But of course nothing is that simple…

tldr: My work is giving me some weird vague timeline of when I’m moving to my new position while suggesting I help out in the new department for less pay than I was offered

I work as a sales associate at a store. Got promoted to a corporate department. Dying to distance myself from customer service. But of course it’s not a simple move…

First, I work at a very small store, as in I am one of the only people that works there, so they have to wait til they can find a replacement. Kind of fair until they tell me it will be “hopefully in a month” (this being already 2 weeks after I signed my offer letter). And I’m like: what would you have done in another universe if I gave my two weeks notice? Just do whatever you would do in that situation and get me out lol.

Then they say, “well in the meantime we will have you keep working at the store but one day a week start going to the corporate office”. Already annoying for several reasons. I feel like I won’t retain what I learn training in my new position if there are constant 7 day gaps for several weeks.

But then my main question: “How will the pay work?” Right now I get paid hourly and this new position is salary. Already makes the situation confusing. But also at 40 hours a week, this new salary works out to be about $9 more an hour than what I am currently making. And what is their response? “I think you’ll just be clocking in at the office just like you would at the store with your rate now.” In other words, work a position that requires more experience and expertise at the pay you currently make at a completely different position and lose hundreds of dollars for a vague amount of weeks until hopefully we find someone at the store.

So yea long story short, I am really annoyed and was hoping to be moved into this position much sooner, but hopefully the time passes quickly…

Customers think I am trying to cheat them out of their store discount/rewards

Me: "Hi, what can I get for you today?"

Customer: "Umm, are you gonna ask for my phone number???!"

Me: "Sure we can do that first if you want. I can put it in now or later it doesn't matter."

Customer: "Well I just want to make sure I get it on my account"

Like yea it's fine to double check to make sure or whatever but they always ask with this attitude as if I am purposely hoping they forget. Like ma'am I don't care if you get 100% off. That's great I don't give a shit how much this company makes. Some places ask for the phone number first, some places don't. I promise it will be okay. They always seem so stressed about it.

Anyone else find most "good trans jokes" still really lame?

Obviously there is no shortage of comedians making lame overdone trans jokes. But then I occasionally see someone who isn't hateful making a trans joke and the comments are praising them like "now THIS is how you make a good trans joke", and even though, yes I am happy to see someone not just be hateful, or even when I can tell they are very respectful, it's still just.. not really good?

Obviously everyone is different and no one has the same sense of humor. I just feel sometimes as a big comedy fan that people are so relieved when someone isn't punching down on trans people that they default to praising it for comedic value. I think it annoys me because genuinely offensive trans jokes are not the only ones that are overdone.

"Yea my friend is trans, and I respect her pronouns. SHE can be a bitch sometimes 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂" Like idk I feel like whenever I see a (usually cis) comedian bring up trans people, whether it be a conservative hack or someone more progressive, I always kind of sigh knowing it is going to be something I've heard before. *Introduce trans character* *Proceed to say any sentence known to man with the word "identify"* *Get laugh*

Do only certain dialects of English use "hell" to mean "as a matter of fact"?

Example: That food was really good. Hell, I'd eat it every day if I could!

I was just thinking about this usage and haven't really seen it talked about explicitly. Wondering if people use it all around the world or only in certain parts of the US.

Everyone at every age should have to take a written and road test every time they renew their drivers license

People always talk about how old people need to be tested more to make sure they’re good to drive, but I think it should be every age.

I mean really think about it. This is a license meant to demonstrate you are authorized to operate heavy machinery at high speeds in the presence of not only hundreds of other people with these same machines also traveling at high speeds, but also unprotected pedestrians and children. If you forget that it’s a car for a second, you realize how crazy it is that most adults have this license. And with that in mind, remember that there are thousands and thousands of people who, for them, the education on how to maneuver this multi-ton machine traveling over 60mph was a class they took when they were in 9th or 10th grade. As in, had just recently gotten out of middle school.

Do I think this would be fucking annoying? Yes. I would honestly be pretty annoyed doing it every time at the DMV. But honestly, it would be worth it to know that everyone else is taking the same tests. How many senseless injuries and deaths are caused because someone has the wrong idea about who has the right of way, or who doesn’t really know how to calibrate their mirrors, or who doesn’t ever think about checking their blind spot or using their turn signals?

And yes I know the most unrealistic part is the road driving test as it would probably take too much time. But I think having everyone at least do a written on the most important parts is possible.

Washing a dish and then accidentally dropping it in the sink only to have to wash it again

Not the end of the world and it only takes a few seconds to rewash depending on the dish, but it always gets an annoyed exhale out of me.

I hate when customers act as if their preferences are obvious

Me: Would you like a printed receipt?

Customer who likes receipts: Yea of course? How else will I show my boss what material we used for this job?

Customer who doesn't like receipts: Ummmm is it not in the computer system already? Why would I need a paper copy?

I don't fucking know you. Just say yes or no. Believe it or not there are people who have different preferences than you that come in every day.

When people think me mentioning I’m trying to be on social media less is bragging/ saying I’m better than them

No it’s me saying I’m worse. It’s embarrassing that’s it’s something I need to get under control. Maybe it would be something I could brag about if I didn’t have to try at all to lower my screentime. Like the fact I have to download other apps to lock me out of social media apps is not cool.

If I don't know the answer to your question, I will say "I don't know, let me go check". But if I am giving you a straight answer answer, it's because I DO KNOW

A daily occurrence

Customer: [Question]

Me: [Answer]

Customer: Are you sure? Because I saw...

Me: Yes, I'm sure.

Customer: Well, could you just check if...

Me: If you would like us both to waste a few minutes while I verify something I already know and am trying to tell you then, sure, I can do that.

Again as my title says: If I wasn't sure, I would say "I'm not sure" or "I don't know". But in this case I DO KNOW and I AM TRYING TO TELL YOU.

Trans people in the US thinking about leaving the country: What are your feelings about it?

This has been a very conflicting back and forth for me for the last few years of course as things get worse with the administration. My overall back and forth is "I need to get out of here before it gets worse" vs "Fuck you, this is my home too and you can't make me leave no matter how much you hate me".

I feel sometimes like a coward for thinking about leaving. Like there are so many queer people before me that fought back so much to make here a better place for us. And in my time of being alive I'm just like "Nah too hard, see ya." But then on the other hand I feel like I shouldn't feel guilty at all for wanting to leave a scary situation.

I also sometimes feel stupid like I am just suffering from extremely wishful thinking. Like, there are so many people that hate us in every country. So what if I go through all of this work just to end up with a government that eventually has someone voted in inspired by the conservative wave and I'm just living with the same fear in an unfamiliar place. Also I know that there are millions and millions of people here who love and support trans people. And my day to day is surrounded by so many amazing people.

I don't know it's just a lot. And of course not a decision to be taken lightly. I'm just curious how other people are feeling.

I don't think I would have minded if RE9 didn't have Leon in it

(Mild spoilers for anyone who hasn't played 9)

I'm saying this is one of the people that was introduced to the series through the original RE4 and who loves Leon. I've probably played RE4 more than any other game. I was super excited when they announced he would be in the game. And when I first started my playthrough I was loving playing as both Grace and Leon. And I don't think it was even that Leon's parts were bad, but that I thought Grace's were so good, that I found myself playing as Leon and thinking "This is really fun, but I can't wait to switch back to Grace".

Don't get me wrong, walking in to the police department was lovely and hearing the original piano melody from RE2, and all of that stuff. But for most of the Raccoon City section, I was just a little bored. Looking for some satellite things or whatever it was? I can't even remember as I think about it. I think the nail in the coffin was being in the lab and crouching behind boxes gunning down soldiers and I was just like "Am I playing Call of Duty right now?" Not that there is no place for action of course, I just felt like it was a moment of pure action with no horror.

But my favorite things about any of the RE games I've played have been the horror aspects. And it was so much fun playing as a character whose whole thing was being scared. Also loved the flashback orphanage section and thought it was super creepy.

Again it's not that I necessarily thought Leon's parts were bad, but when I think about all of my favorite parts of the game, almost all of the are ones playing as Grace. And I found myself thinking I would definitely trade Leon's screen time out for more of Grace.

But anyway, it's not a super strong opinion. Just a thought I was having reflecting on the game.

Edit: Heard some say this has been talked about before. Honestly, I blocked this sub for a while to not get spoilers so idk what discussions have been had so sorry for any repeat points.

Any groups for adults learning Spanish in the area? (Elgin)

I am not looking for a tutor as I already have one, but I was wondering if there were any groups/clubs/get togethers for people wanting to get more practice learning and speaking Spanish as a second language. I assume there is a community of learners especially being surrounded by so many cities with large Spanish speaking populations.

I have heard of and seen stuff like this in other cities in the country where people will meet maybe every week or so at a bar or coffee shop and just talk and practice. And I assume something similar must exist somewhere in or nearby the city.

Any info would be much appreciated!

¿Cuándo se puede usar la estructura: “Por <adjetivo> que <verbo>”?

Estoy leyendo un libro en español y había una frase “Por extraño que parezca…” y entiendo que significa “As strange as it seems…”. Mi pregunta es ¿Se puede usar esta estructura en general: “Por <adjetivo> que <verbo 3ª persona subjuntivo>” para decir “As <adjective> as it <verb>”?

Por ejemplo, ¿podría decir los siguientes?

Por raro que suene…
Por bueno que se vea…
Por malo que sienta…

¿O solo tiene sentido en un par de casos?

¡Gracias!
