How and when to raise rates?

I started my own bookkeeping business about 5 years ago and I have only raised my rates maybe once since then. I know that I am egregiously undercharging my clients and I have struggled a lot with imposter syndrome so putting a price on my "worth" is hard.

I would like to raise my rates to keep up with rising cost of living (and I am going back to school for a master's in accounting) but I am not sure how much I should raise it by, when I should implement it, and how I should notify my clients.

I have several clients I charge $100 a month (I know this is so cheap) but if I raise them to $200 I worry they will complain about my rate doubling. So do I raise them slowly over time, and by how much? Do I wait until the new year to raise my rates or do it ASAP?

Reading this sub has convinced me that I need to charge more but I just don't know how to do it with confidence. To just put it in an email that is NOTIFYING them and not ASKING them if it's acceptable for them. My clients can afford to pay me more, but I had one experience where a client pushed back when I tried to bring up raising my rate and it's made me scared to revisit it.

Handmade cutting boards?

Does anyone know where to get a good quality cutting board made locally? I am sick of the (fake?) bamboo ones that warp and the plastic ones that never feel clean.

I saw two years ago someone posted about a farmers market vendor who used to make them but he passed away.

Looking for something high quality that can last! Thanks in advance :)

Brian Jordan Alvarez’s “TJ Mack” characters predicted the Edward and Marissa saga

I was reminded of these skits and went back to watch them and this part specifically reminded me of them 🤣 Then there’s the part where the wife doesn’t let him come to a dinner with her “elegant” girlfriends because he would be talking about TJ Maxx (read: baseball) the whole time.

Here’s a compilation if you want more:

BTW just have to pick a bone with the fact that I tried posting this on the main subreddit and it got unfairly flagged by the auto moderator for using “filler words” 🙄

Driving to Boise from Moscow for the first time and not sure which route so as not to die

I’ve been debating whether I should take 55 or 95. I fear that I have been reading too much about accidents on 55 and I just know that as a cautious driver I will probably get stressed out from how I hear people drive aggressively on that highway. I have been through Boise a couple years ago but I wasn’t driving and I admit that the big multi lane highway also freaks me out a little bit. For example if I take 84, Google Maps wants me to take the pictured exit onto Vista Road and this intersection is unlike anything I’ve ever seen (for reference I’m from Post Falls/Coeur d’Alene area).

My Airbnb is around Depot Bench so I thought 55 would be more convenient and I wouldn’t have to drive through Caldwell, Nampa, etc.

Would it be less stressful to take 95 down, then get on 26 at Caldwell to head east to avoid more of 84?

What do you call this splitty move & how do you like to get out of it?

Just did this in class last night and I like it but don't know how to search for ideas for transitions or tips!

Bob the Drag Queen and Monét X Change try pole dancing!

I honestly love seeing people try pole for the first time, especially when they are people I love (got so excited to see Megan thee Stallion is taking classes!). Honestly they did pretty great, I am sure wearing Pleasers for drag is a big advantage. So who do you think deserved the win? I think Monét had a great flow!

How to assert the value of your work when pitching to new clients?

I've been running my own bookkeeping practice for a few years now. Almost all of my clients have come to me through my dad, who is a CPA.

When it comes to reaching out to new clients on my own, I don't have a lot of experience, and something I'm running into now is - how do you explain what you do to clients without making it sound so easy that they could do it themselves?

I know that bookkeeping is not as easy as it appears, and that given the chance, many business owners will make a mess of their own books. But when I am asked to explain what I do, I think I might make it sound easy. I also don't want to pitch myself as being smarter than a potential client by saying something like "if I don't do your books, you'll screw it up, and it will cost you more down the road to get someone to fix it".

I've had a couple experiences with people who were looking for a bookkeeper without knowing exactly what they needed, and that's where I feel I have to explain to them what it is I do (and how it differs from an accountant) and maybe put my foot in my mouth.

If anyone has advice (or resources) on how to handle finding new clients without undervaluing your work, I'd appreciate it!

Blue monkey hands grip aid never works & grip aid on powder pole?

I have been struggling to find the right grip aid to use in my summer classes because we switch facilities and there are powder poles instead of chrome.

I’ve noticed that ever since I bought the blue monkey hands grip aid, it has never once worked for me. Instead of making my hands at all tacky, it just clumps up on my skin. Completely useless and likely makes my grip WORSE.

I have the green but it can be overkill when in class they want us to do spin moves on static powder pole. I know people swear by the red one, but I’m a little cautious to buy it because 1) I am doubtful it will work on my skin and 2) I don’t really want to support companies that use generative AI in their marketing (something I’ve seen from them lately).

I had slightly better luck with Grip Tite and I also have Dry Hands (the one with the hand print on the bottle), Monkey Hands Dry and Dancing Dust. But I can’t manage to find the right solution for me. My hands don’t *seem* terribly sweaty, I just need a little extra sticking power even after I use the MH dry hands.

What does this Sfera Ebbasta lyric mean?

Non giudicatemi perché sto ascoltando la sua musica per la prima volta solo adesso 🥲 comunque in questa canzone, dice «quattro in mate’» e mi stavo chiedendo cosa volesse dire!

Anyone here wear a women’s 6 on the left and 9 on the right?

I know it’s a long shot because I have such a severe difference in my sizes, but if anyone wears those sizes and is interested in a free pair of Crocs sandals, I have some mismates available. I am really happy they have the Velcro straps on the top and at the heel so that means they are adjustable to fit my clubfoot which has a bump over the top and wide at the midfoot.

Let me know if you’re interested! Maybe I would just ask for a few bucks for shipping depending on where you are located.

We suddenly are getting mold in our bathroom sink and it keeps coming back?

I’ve lived in this apartment for 5 years and only in the past 6 months or so have we been dealing with this recurring mold in our bathroom sink. We run our bathroom fan much more than I used to (I lived above a chronic smoker so the bathroom fan would bring her smoke up to our place, now she’s gone so the fan is seeing way more use) so I don’t know that it’s that. The only other things that have changed are 1) my husband shaves and dyes his mustache so maybe there is more detritus going down than usual? And 2) our cat likes to drink from the sink now, but she only ever drinks from the faucet.

Because she drinks from there and has allergies I’m hesitant to use the mold spray I have, and will probably just use vinegar (not bleach because I just learned that bleach makes it worse).

I also worry that this mold is able to grow because maybe I damaged the porcelain when I was trying to clean around the drain with drywall screen (I have used that in the past for hard water stains on sinks and toilets). Maybe I scratched it too much so now the mold has a place to take hold?

I’d like to try and sort this out myself before resorting to calling maintenance. If you have any ideas how to prevent this mold coming back I’d appreciate it!

Best Pilates classes for beginner? Moscow Mountain Sport or Sculpt?

I’m hoping to take some classes this summer and I am aware of these two options for pilates in Moscow - if anyone knows more places and can recommend a specific instructor, please do!
I’ve never done a pilates class before either so if you are experienced I’d love to hear about why you enjoyed a class! It looks like MMS has reformer classes and are less expensive, but maybe I would enjoy being in Sculpt’s studio environment more?

Is there a store policy not to put underwear in sizes larger than medium on display?

I don’t know if it’s just the store I went to today, but on the underwear displays I did not find a single pair in a size larger than medium. I understand that there is limited space on the displays (though when it comes to underwear the larger pairs don’t take up that much more space, especially with thongs), but it’s annoying and uncomfortable for customers to have to kneel down and dig through the drawers instead of just being able to browse/look at the stuff up top. I honestly had a hard time finding much of anything past small or medium, including bras, sweatpants, etc. It had me thinking if this is common at every store? I have only been in a VS/Pink store a few times in my life, and I know VS is not known for catering to larger sizes but I have to imagine that a good portion of clientele are above a size M.

Is it normal to have worse grip strength on spin pole?

I’m an upper beginner (been dancing about 1 year) and in my classes we have only stage poles and rarely use spin (mostly because less than half of our poles can go on spin and they are scared of beginners hurting themselves) so when we CAN use spin, I feel like I lose all my grip strength in my hands.

I can do things like chair spin, fireman, rockstar spin on static no problem, but when we turn the pole on spin I am not able to engage my muscles and slide all over. Maybe it’s a psychological thing and I just need to use spin every chance I get just to build up the strength and get over whatever subconscious fear I have?

Batch editing sales receipts isn't possible but it's an option (greyed out) in batch actions drop down list?

Basically just venting... But I batch imported over 75 sales receipts and they went through no problem, now I'm trying to match the receipts on the bank transactions screen and it won't let me, because "you cannot enter more than 21 characters in the doc_num field" - I used a reference number that is a long string of letters.

The problem with this is: 1) If I can't put that many characters in that field, it should prompt you at the receipt CREATION stage, not the matching stage, which means that now...

2)I have to individually edit each sales receipt and shorten the reference number. You can see "edit" in the dropdown list of batch actions on the sales transaction page... but you can't select it. So they're just teasing us at this point.

It should be possible to send selected receipts back to the batch creation screen for editing.

But no, we can't have any PRACTICAL updates to QBO... just more stupid AI features and UI tweaks.

I ordered the Hugad/Räcka double curtain rod set and the ends are hollow, I can't put all the finials on?

The curtain rods are hollow on the ends and the box came with two kind of corkscrew shaped plastic pieces (unlabeled and not in a bag or anything), my husband was able to put them on the ends of the rods and then screw in the HELTUSS finials... but I would need two more to use all the finials.

Ikea customer service doesn't know what the plastic piece is and they offered to replace both rods, but that seems like a hassle... any idea what I could do instead? Maybe cut some styrofoam and shove it in there and put the filial in it?
