Using apostrophes makes my cursor jump backwards.

only happening on DDG browser (macos) in Reddit comments, as far as i’ve determined.

(all systems up to date)

if i type a contraction, like “I’ve” or “We’ve” as soon as i hit the spacebar after completing the word the cursor jumps back to just after the apostrophe. bizarrely, other contractions like “Don’t” cause the cursor to not move forward with the spacebar. it just stays at the end of word until i hit the spacebar a second time.

i’ve turned off Rich Text, and it’s stopped happening. so there’s that.

anyone else experiencing this?

Can’t transfer from Joint Cash Plus Account to Individual Brokerage...

after talking to a VG rep, i’ve discovered i cannot transfer cash from my joint CPA to my Individual Brokerage, apparently because the former is a joint account.

yet i can transfer cash from the joint CPA to my Roth / Trad IRA / 529…?

how does that make any sense?

anyone know a workaround other than transferring the cash to another bank, then back in to my Individual Brokerage account?

LG Top Load owners - Using Deep Fill Option

my rental has an LG WT7405C that was recently installed, so i’m revamping my wash routine.

curious what options others with similar models use. i find the Deep Fill option to be necessary, otherwise the water level doesn’t even cover the items. but i’m also finding that the Deep Fill LED turns off after the initial wash fill. do i have to press it again for the rinse cycle?

additionally, the app almost never shows Deep Fill selected, even if the LED is lit on the unit.

also, if you are a cloth diaper household, what’s your routine?

after spraying off solids, i run diaper inserts and covers through a Rinse & Spin cycle with 1/2 Tbs Tide C&G powder, then add additional household items 1-2 Tbs poweder (plus boosters if warranted, 1 tsp Citric Acid in the Fabric Softener tray) for a Deep Wash, with modifiers: Deep Fill, Semi-Warm, High Spin, Heavy Soil, Soak, and Extra Rinse.

my old washer was 20+ years old and i miss being able to just leave items soaking for 30-60 minutes before started the wash cycle. this newfangled thing will automatically drain the water if left off for 4 minutes...

TIA

Spray / Squeegee / Hamper Setup coming together...

wanted a hamper that would dry out the inserts as much as possible between washer (typically every other day).

used a HVAC duct flange mounted on two pieces of aluminum angle stock, with a large mesh sack. works great!

i tried to add some KamSnaps along the sides of the angle stock, but mostly just drape the inserts over the top of the flange.

the biggest improvement is using a 6” paint roller with a plastic sleeve on it to squeeze as much water out of the inserts after spraying them. works so much better than unsnapping and re-snapping the SprayPal.

sidenote: i started to put together a DIY kit instead of buying the SprayPal, but it added up to nearly the same price. also, i gotta say, the sprayer on the SprayPal is high quality! it’s not just on/off like most sink sprayers i’ve used. you can actually control the flow with the lever. though i will say the clip on the SprayPal feels like it’s going to snap off any day now. and i added a piece of Coroplast to the back to add some rigidity when squeezing the water out with the roller.

planning to add some magnets to the angle stock to keep it from moving around on the tub.

Local cyclist killed, people call for FLOCK surveillance rather than more human-friendly streets.

a local cyclist was killed by a hit & run driver in my city earlier this month.

multiple commenters saying they wish we had more FLOCK warrantless-surveillance cameras in the area. the depths of carbrain. 🙃

if you don’t know:

https://deflock.me/ - see how many cameras you pass every day.

Fun Facts About Flock:

  • Flock cameras also record audio. In theory they are using AI to identify "sounds of human distress"
  • Flock has partnered with Amazon/Ring so they can combine their camera data with the feed coming from your front door. (source). In theory this they pop up and ask for footage, but considering the number of times they have been caught lying about data access I question that highly. (Example: does flock share with with the Federal government? "Oh no, we don't do that!" Except they do: source )
  • Flock markets the ability to "predict crime before it happens" -- haven't we seen that movie?
  • Flock is currently trialing drones which can be launched to follow you. (source, it sounds wild but it's true )

What material to mend plastic camp chair seat…?

curious what would be a good choice of thread for a mend like this.

i assume just a simple darning pattern would be best?

or maybe a iron-on patch?

TIA!

Financial Advisor is making being a Boglehead annoyinging difficult.

this is mostly just to vent, but also make sure i’m not dealing with something nefarious.

i’m a recent Bogle convert and have been trying to make moves to leave my financial advisor. the first step is selling a dozen high-Expense Ratio, underperforming, Tech-heavy and otherwise non-Bogle holdings over to VT.

i figure i would take advantage of my FA skills to make this move, making sure losses are harvested and that i'm not paying more in taxes than i have to.

but lordy they are either incompetent or intentionally dragging their feet. i have sent multiple detailed spreadsheets, specifying which holdings i want sold, and in some cases specifying which unit purchases, to keep my Capital Gains lower and ideally keep my HH income under the 0% LTCG threshold.

they keep coming back to me with a total sale proceeds number that is 15% lower than the number i get when i do the numbers… so i asked for details on the unit numbers, prices and proceeds they are working with.

they just sent a screenshot of the table their investment desk put together and in 7 of the 12 trades, inexplicably, portions of holdings are not included. ex: i asked to sell all 60.000 units of FictionalName stock. their table only includes 40.000 units, with no explanation. sometimes it’s just a few units, sometimes it’s nearly have the holdings. the “missing” units add up to about the difference in our total proceeds number.

so, is this something i’m not understanding about how trades are done? i have since asked if this a partial fill or limit order thing? or is this just some sketchy sh!t where they are selling a portion of my holdings and doing god-knows-what with the unsold units?

this is a very well established brokerage, which my family has been using for actual generations. (i know, i’m working on winning other family members over to the Bogleways)

again, this is mostly just to check i’m not missing something. they are being concerningly cagey during this whole thing.

on the plus side, this has allowed me to put together a long list of complaints i’ll be sending over when i formally request they transfer my accounts over to the VG account i’ve set up since joining this sub...

thanks in advance y’all.

Nora’s Nursey - replacing snaps?

has anyone here experienced NN diaper cover snaps that stop holding?

i have two sets, both purchased used. the first ones work great, no issues. just picked up some more from someone who said they bought them on Amazon and never used them. so far have discovered multiple pairs that do not hold the insert snap, and some snaps on the front don’t hold either.

i’m curious if anyone has determined the size of snap and a source for replacements.

i’ll reach out to NN and see if they can offer any help, but i’d love to DIY, so i can add snaps to other homemade inserts too.

DIY Window-mounted Fresh Air Filtration and Positive Pressure Producer

inspired by u/RedHeadedMenace’s post yesterday, thought i’d share the construction of a similar, though much more compact, contraption to bring fresh, filtered air into my rental. my place is incredibly drafty, so this also helps control ingress of unfiltered air by creating positive pressure.

simple box fan, 5” MERV13 filter (see photo for a year of use comparison), wood and foam construction. recently added latches to keep the door pulled snug against weather stripping when closed.

and it works incredibly well. i have both an indoor and outdoor AQ monitor, and even when outdoor PM2.5 levels are >50ppm i see zero impact to indoor PM levels when running.

i can watch indoor CO2 drop like a rock even just on low or medium fan speed. high speed for a proper Stoßlüften!

yes, humidity is an issue. though it has surprisingly little impact on indoor humidity ime. it can be +90% outside and running the fan for 30-60 mins will maybe bump the indoor humidity up a few percent. which is totally worth the drop in CO2. version 3 might be a louvered opening, or an in-line fan with some automation options, or i might just go with a proper ductless ERV with humidity and temp mitigation… but for maybe $150 in materials, this is great for a DIY renter!

A Farmer Donated Land to Turn into a Park. The City Is Building a Massive Data Center Instead

FTA

"Almost 30 years ago a farming family deeded land to the City of Taylor, Texas, on the condition the city use it for a public park. For the nominal fee of $10, the farmers granted the 87 acres to a public trust in 1999. Taylor sold it to Blueprint, a data center developer, for $10 million in 2025. Now the land that was supposed to belong to the community will become a 135,000 square foot data center.

Pamela Griffin and her family have owned homes near that land for generations. Griffin and her brothers and sisters played baseball on it, camped out on it, and then watched as their children and their children’s children did the same. Now a data center will be there, just 500 feet from Griffin’s home, nestled between a power substation and the nearby railroad tracks."

Building a Catio - what materials for lounge areas?

putting together plans to build a catio this summer, but not sure what to use on the platforms where kitties will be lounging.

it will be constructed of cedar, with cedar fence pickets used as the horizontal platforms. but would love to add somethings more comfortable for them to lounge on.

but what would be able to handle exposure to the elements?

would like to stick with natural fibers, but they would likely not last long, and would need to dry quickly to prevent mold. maybe removable hammocks made of old towels, so they could be periodically washed?

maybe waxed canvas? i've got some nice heavy stuff for other projects. would still probably need replacing every couple years.

any ideas, fellow Catifiers?

TIA

Subaru Rear Hub Removal the easy way.

Always seeing posts about people struggling with rear wheel bearings so figured I would share this. I am a tech at a Subaru dealer and we all have different methods, this is what I use. This guy has a longer version of this video that goes more in depth.

Best way to confirm Oil Changes were not skipped?

i’m in the market for a 2nd Gen, and the few examples i’ve seen in my area (and which meet other criteria: single-owner, no wrecks, no rust, and ideally around 100k miles) seem to have gaps in there oil change intervals.

looking at the CarFax, i‘ll see a 20-40k mile gap between a reported oil change. which has me paranoid about owners just skipping oil changes. (i’m a former mechanic, and it’s wild how often folks completely neglect do regular oil changes, and the engine becomes caked with sludge. and yes, i realize the limitations of CarFax, and that not all service might show up. but when i see regular changes at quicklubes, then nothing for 20k, it makes me concerned)

what’s the best way to check for sludge in one of these little engines? are the valves / cams visible under the oil fill cap?

any other tips to make sure the engine hasn’t been cooked?
