saw the recent post asking about how true caligula's excessiveness was... while many roman historians wrote years after he died... we actually do have a contemporary source on caligula!

I copy pasted my answer to the post:

so basically, a lot about what we know may be exaggerated due to his lack of popularity with the senate and the fact that most of our records of him are a) decades after he died, or b) from writers who were working for the next dynasty (not julio-claudian).

BUT. we do have a contemporary account of caligula. and its actually by the alexandrian jewish theologian/philosopher Philo of Alexandria. It is called "on the embassy to gaius".

there is a story about how the jewish embassy in alexandria made a visit to caligula after he tried to install his statue in the temple of jerusalem and tried to force them to worship him. he basically makes fun of them for only worshipping one god and not worshipping him, calls them crazy, and then proceeds to ask them questions about why they dont eat pork and make fun of their diet. flexes his awesome garden and brags about all the building hes doing. meanwhile the entire jewish embassy is scared to death that he will kill them. some of them are praying under their breaths for god to show them mercy.

and the end he declares these men are innocent because they seem foolish not to worship him, and not evil. everyone is sighing in relief.

few years later they hear caligula died and philo says it must have been retribution for his insensitivity to the (obviously) one true god.

If Nolan ever does a historical epic again, he should adapt “Augustus” by John Williams

I feel like we are long overdue a good adaptation of Emperor Augustus. there’s tons of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra and Mark Antony films out there and not many of Augustus. more specifically, I think “Augustus” by John Williams (who also wrote ”Stoner”) is best suitable for film.

”Augustus” is a historical fiction novel that follows Augustus from his time as Octavian post-Caesar’s assassination to his death as the first emperor of Rome. it follows him through the people around him— enemies, friends, mentors, family. the story is narrated through fictional letters, journal entries, poems, from these people.

i think “Augustus” by John Williams is a good match for Christopher Nolan because it is thematically right up his alley. It is a coming of age story, it is about sacrifice, it is about power and ambition, it is about what it costs to be a great leader while wanting to be a good man, it is about a father-daughter relationship, and it asks the question “is it all worth it in the end?" The novel especially reminds me of Oppenheimer, the Prestige, Odyssey, the dark knight, and Interstellar.

Augustus himself also feels like a classic Nolan-style protagonist. Intelligent, a bit cold, analytical, flawed, and even cruel-- but also with a sensitive side from his youth, a soft spot for family and friends, and capable of greatness.

while i do enjoy nolan's original stuff, if he ever chooses to do another historical epic we need to see "Augustus". He's the only one who can bring the scale, the epicness, to the film-- while keeping what makes Nolan Nolan!

also, highly recommend reading if you have not already!

I am new to LinkedIn. I applied to an internship, and afterwards it showed me people who go to my school who work for the company. Do I reach out to them? What do I do?

I am totally clueless on how to use this app or how linkedin etiquette works. please help!

New to linked in. Am currently a college student but should I still connect with my old highschool classmates?

tbh I tend to overthink and the idea of connecting with old hs classmates scares me but is it normal?

Ancient Roman sculptures and busts look better than Renaissance sculptures and busts.

disclaimer: as an amateur artist who typically focuses on surrealism, Im NOT trying to argue that realism inherently = better, but both movements strived for naturalism and in this case, I think the Romans did it better

both of them strive for realism and the renaissance was directly influenced by classical styles, but I prefer ancient Roman (early imperial/late republic) busts and sculptures because it seems like the ancient Roman’s were more open to facial flaws and unique features over idealism.

I also feel like all the Roman busts have distinct facial features I can recognize that makes them unique, it feels like I’m looking at a real person, whereas all of the Renaissance sculptures‘ faces look rather the same or the proportions are off despite the goal of mimicking the classical art and realism.

this is an unpopular opinion because while the Renaissance did revive classical art styles and methods, the Renaissance is hailed as one of the best artistic movements, and sculptors like Michelangelo are hailed as one of the greatest artists of the time, I personally believe the ancient styles of sculpture were superior and achieved the realism better.

tldr; Augustus of prima porta > David

As someone interested in ancient history, I find it unfortunate how Zionists use the Jewish-Roman wars and the aftermath of it to justify the state of Israel and commit a genocide… To me, the ancient Judeans, who were under the thumb of an imperialist regime, always resembled Palestinians

Are followers automatic from Instagram if I’m not following them back??

so I connected with my IG acct and a few days later I checked and had 88 followers who happen to my mutual on IG, but I don’t follow them back on Threads. but I don’t follow anyone back. does that mean they followed me but I didn’t follow them or is that how they automatically follow me anyway?
