1887 Morgan -- Guess the grade? I want to upgrade this coin.

I'm considering sending in the coin for reconsideration. I'd like to know what you think the grade is before I pull the trigger and try to get it upgraded. I've only sent in one Morgan for reconsideration in the past--it didn't get upgraded, but it also wasn't in a rattler.

EDIT: Pic with grade in the comments below. I won't spoil it up here. Anyway--Thank you all for the opinions! I doubt I'll ever crack this girl out of the rattler... I will go for a bean. We'll see...

I need to hear some of your struggles with alcohol.

Since around the time of COVID, lots of good things have happened... mainly I was forced out of my corporate world and into the world of entrepreneurship. While that's been great, I've also started drinking a lot more... not like blackout drunk, but way more regularly. It's not ruining my life, but it's definitely impacting it. You always think of alkies (what we'd call them in hs) as being homeless and wife-beaters... For me it's a silent battle... I want to completely quit one day, but then I'm out with my buddies at golf and next thing you know, I'm drinking beer again. The thing that got me questioning the drinking is I just got my annual physical yesterday and my uric acid is up and while my bloodwork is okay--I'm just thinking--do I try to quit again???

I definitely think I have a problem. But not necessarily a call to start going to AA meetings. I'm not drunk driving and missing work. Is anyone else out there experiencing this low-grade struggle with drinking? Did you quit? I need a little inspiration or a kick in the pants.

$100+ in gold face value = today?

Broke through $100 face in gold earlier this year and have added quite a lot since then. Here's my stack. Picked up a couple of other random coins that I like--most of the gold shields I submitted... which one do you think is my favorite piece?

French minted America 250 medals/coins

I saw this in Coin World's 250th special edition--a French 25 euro coin with 4 july 1997 and 4 july 2026 on it. They are only making 2000 of these 2oz antiqued silver (~400 Euro), and 500 of the gold 7.75 gram proof coins (~1400 Euro). I picked up one of each. They are still available on the French Mint's website and ship next week. There are bigger versions, but they start getting into 3-5k plus USD--a little more than I want to spend.

The obverse is really my favorite. It wasn't until recently that I came across an interpretation:

"Liberty Pole and Cap
The liberty cap is a soft, felt cap, sometimes hung on a pole and accompanying its (usually female) owner, sometimes capping the owner’s head. The meaning behind the cap derives from its use before the Roman Empire, when similar felt caps were worn by liberated slaves of Troy and Asia Minor to cover their shorn heads; the cap therefore once “symbolized emancipation from personal servitude rather than constitutional political liberty” (Fryd, 109). The caps are sometimes referred to by their Latin name, pilleus liberatis, and they became a significant accessory for the French in depictions of the French Revolution. As for the pole, “the cap was joined to the pole as a symbol of freedom when Salturnius conquered Rome in 263 B.C. where, in a burst of inspiration, he raised the cap on a pikestaff to show that the slaves who joined his fight would be freed” (Fox, 4.)"

I also came across:

"In the period just prior to the War for Independence, one of the rallying ikons of the Sons of Liberty and related groups was a Liberty Cap set atop a flagpole. My guess would be that the images on the coins were meant to connect Lady Liberty directly to the movement for independence by recalling those flag poles, rather than relying on the more generalized image of “Liberty,” herself.

There is a discussion of Liberty Caps on this https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/xf-cap.html"

Anyway, I'm into these coins/medals whatever you want to call them. Have a great Saturday!

Picked this up today.

I was going to sell some silver to buy some other under-spot bullion I found, but it was a little out of my budget, so I passed. I was at an estate sale shop and found this coin I could pick up today for $4,150. It's a beauty.

Free silver.

A friend of mine called me up the other day and said she had some sterling silver flatware I could have. I was expecting a couple of spoons or something and thought nothing of it--I was going to see a pal and have a nice chat. I drove over to her place and she gave me this. She said it's "a lot" and just said I could have it. I offered to pay her for it but she wouldn't accept. I won't get into why she did this but she felt like she owed me... I got it home and weighed it... I'm speechless...

How the hell are you Howard fans in the first place?

Howard is a septuagenarian. The fact that he is still "on the air" is literally amazing. What's the deal with the endless criticism? He's barely on.

I can't believe how much you guys love/hate this guy. Leave his wife alone, she's just a person. Jill? who cares? She is basically a wack packer in training.

V/V trainor and the other dudes getting "fired", no one cares.

Mail Call Monday -- SLQ and Silver medal showed up before noon.

This came lightning-fast... shipped on Friday afternoon, just a couple of hours after it opened for sale. The silver medal is chunky and really a treat to hold and look at, expensive but impressive. Posting some of the book that came with it--the BOM booklets that come with these coins are high quality, I enjoy reading through them.

1916 SLQ Gold Piece. Just released today.

I haven't been buying my typical numismatics—that is, searching for nice pieces to fill out collections or actual rarities. It's been more about just scratching the hoarding itch. I bought the 1916 gold dime and the 2016 dime — and I couldn't resist the gold SLQ. It's like all reason has gone out the window.

Then, i just noticed that it didn't sell out, I'm not trying to sell mine or anything--just curious on what you all think of the market. I think its going a little soft.

Just got my LM1 Shot Scope. What should I expect?

I've been playing sporadically for a long time, but never really got into swing aids, gadgets, or tools to measure swing speed. I just got fitted for clubs, and I'm hitting the ball further--enough that I'm flying greens I would normally hit... bottom line I'm hitting the ball better.

The cost of a trackman, foresight, or some other launch monitor for 1000s of bucks wasn't in the budget. As soon as I saw the LM1 for 200.00 bucks I pre-ordered it from some place and now I trying it out at home -- just hitting into a net.

I've only done 2 sessions today with my gap and pw--and the results are interesting to me. I really didn't have any idea what my average is for these clubs, I just had my "best case scenario" locked into my head, only really remembering the 10% of the shots I hit say 110 yards with my pw. not the other 90% when I say i'd go for 110 and hit 100-90 or worse.

So my questions now are: 1. did your game get noticeably better after you started using a launch monitor? 2. Why do you think it made you better or worse? 3. What is it exactly from getting the feedback from a LM that you did that materially made you play better?

I just see all these: "Build a strategy" tools on the app with the LM, all the time it takes to get this thing configured... is it all worth it? I just want to know what your experience has been -- before and after a LM... Mainly because its saturday afternoon and too hot for me to go hit the course.

2 out of 80

picked up a couple of rolls of 1976 quarters from a neighbor--they were all his FIL the roll looked tight and unopened--all the coins look BU, most have weak strikes on the drum. Nearly all have some golden toning on them except for these two.

TIPS - To Insure Prompt Service

When I got out on my own, I was in the air force, then college... I waited tables on the side. First, it was the Olive Garden, then later, fine dining only. This is in the late 90s, early 2000s. I worked very hard waiting tables, running food, and selling wine. I was taught "Silver Service" at one of the places I worked. I was making an extra 50k a year waiting tables 3-4 nights a week and on all holidays.

When I ate at the restaurant where I worked, the tradition was to tip our colleagues generously. 100% tips were not out of the norm. It was actually kinda fun. Expensive but fun.

Now, if I really want good service when I eat, especially during a meal I care about -- I tip at the start of my meal. I get up after I've been seated at my table and find the person waiting on me after they've taken a drink order. If I'm hosting, I'll just say I'm washing my hands. Then, I introduce myself to the server and hand them some cash. Sometimes I just give them 100+ bucks. $100 to me, for a great night with excellent service for my family, is not a lot of money for the memories.

Give it a shot. Figure out how much 20% or whatever you tip and give it to your server in cash before you eat. Maybe you won't get silver service, but you will get the appreciation of your server.

Swinging for the fences in the coin world

I get that one man's trash is another's treasure. But I would like to get my hands on some real quality. I've been in the game for a while, and I'm ready -- I want to go for patterns, true rarities, Stellas, beautiful EAC, the best 20c pieces, rare double eagles... for those of you who have achieved ownership of the best of the best... how did you do it? Was it just luck?

Did you end up spending 10s of thousands or 100s of thousands? I have a collection with 1000s of coins, but only 10-15 truly are what I would consider (relatively) standout--and that's stretching it. Did you liquidate your whole collection for 1-2 coins? I just need to hear some stories of how someone obtained the top pops and coins that ended up worth millions.

The bacon question.

So every time I order the club supreme, the person making it asks me if I want bacon. Of course, I want bacon--that's why I ordered it. So what's the deal? Why not ask me if I want turkey or some other ingredient? tbh -- it feels predatory... not sure why, maybe because if i say no, then I still get charged for the sandwich WITH bacon...

picked up three of these today (at a neighbor's estate sale) in what looks like original shipping boxes--one is a beautiful toner... the box it was in has old foam packaging that could have caused this--or the plastic cap it's in... 2 have decent tone... and one is completely white. got these just under spot.

I have a complete set of peace dollars and have been buying Daniel Carr peace fantasy strikes — and while on the site, have been drawn into buying other coins he makes.

What's your general opinion of these? I like them a lot. I'm not necessarily concerned with their aftermarket resale value, but they seem to appreciate over time (modestly) as there is a limited number of them made.

For those of you not familiar with Daniel Carr, he is an engraver who has submitted several designs to the US Mint and was a finalist on one of the Sacagawea dollar coins. He owns an old Denver mint press and makes over-strikes and fantasy coins.
