Why are so many apps subscription based now?

Hi guys,

I’ve been noticing this for a while. It feels like almost every app has a subscription now, even apps that don’t seem to have any ongoing server or AI costs. Some even make you start a free trial before you can really use the app.

I’m an indie iOS developer, and it also feels like there’s a lot of pressure to make every new app subscription based because that’s what every app builder recommends.

I’m curious what real users actually think.

- What subscription apps do you happily pay for and use regularly?
- What’s an app you wish was just a one-time purchase?
- Do you still use free apps with ads?
- What makes you decide a subscription is worth it?

I’m mainly trying to understand what people actually value before I decide what to build next.

Thanks.

An app that lets you secretly control the outcome of a coin flip

A few years ago, someone convinced me they were unbelievably lucky at coin flips.

Not "won a few in a row" lucky.

More like "won every important coin toss" lucky.

Eventually I found out there was a trick involved, which got me thinking:

How much do we trust a coin flip simply because it looks random?

That led me down a rabbit hole and eventually I built an app around the idea.

At first glance it's just a realistic coin flip app.

But it also has a hidden mode that lets you secretly force either Heads or Tails while still showing the full coin toss animation.

To anyone watching, it looks completely random.

I've mostly used it for harmless pranks and party tricks, but it's fascinating how quickly people accept the result once they see a coin spinning through the air.

It made me realize that most of us don't trust randomness—we trust the appearance of randomness.

Now I'm curious:

  • If someone handed you a coin flip app, would you assume it was fair?
  • Would you ever use a controlled coin flip as part of a prank or magic trick?
  • At what point does it stop being luck and start being deception?

ULPT: Settle any argument with a coin flip that you secretly control.

Need to decide where to eat? Who pays? Which movie to watch?

Use a coin flip app that lets you secretly choose Heads or Tails while still showing a realistic coin toss animation.

Everyone else thinks fate made the decision.

You know better.

How are people getting so many views on TikTok?

I keep seeing developers and creators get thousands (or even millions) of views from very simple slideshow posts and short demo videos.

I've been experimenting with the same formats across a few accounts, but the results have been pretty underwhelming. Most videos barely get any traction.

Is there something obvious I'm missing?

For those of you who have had success on TikTok:

  • What made the biggest difference?
  • Is it mostly the hook?
  • Posting frequency?
  • Account age?
  • Pure luck with the algorithm?

I've included one of my accounts below if anyone is willing to take a quick look and share honest feedback:

I built a Coin Flip app with a hidden "Magic Mode" that lets you control the result

Hey everyone,

A - Answer
OneToss solves a simple problem: quick coin flips when you don't have a coin nearby. It also includes a hidden Magic Mode for pranks and party tricks.

B - Better
Unlike most coin flip apps that only generate random results, OneToss includes both a realistic random mode and a hidden mode that lets you secretly force Heads or Tails while still showing the full flip animation.

C - Cost
Free usage with ads and an optional subscription or lifetime unlock.

  • Monthly: $1.49
  • Yearly: $12.99
  • Lifetime: $20

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/flip-a-coin-onetoss/id6743804010

I'd love feedback app users:

  • Does the hidden control mechanic feel clever or gimmicky?
  • If you discovered this feature in an app, would you actually use it for pranks or party tricks?
  • Any ideas for making the "magic" aspect more fun without making it obvious?

Also happy to answer any questions about the implementation.

Honest App Review Exchange

Hi guys, looking for fellow app developers who want to try out each other's apps, give each other some meaningful feedback

and leave reviews of the app on the app store.

Built an iPhone app that makes me blink before opening Instagram

I spend 10–12 hours a day in front of screens.

Like most people, I know I'm supposed to blink more and take breaks. The problem is that I completely forget once I'm deep into work or doomscrolling.

So I built a small iPhone app for myself.

Every 60 minutes it blocks selected apps (Instagram, Reddit, etc.) and asks me to complete a short blink exercise. It uses the iPhone's camera to count my blinks and unlocks the app once the exercise is complete.

I've been using it for a few weeks now and it's surprisingly effective because it interrupts the habit at the exact moment I'm about to open an app.

Curious what fellow developers think:

  • Would you actually use something like this?
  • Would you prefer blinking exercises, 20-20-20 reminders, or something else?
  • Any ideas for features that could help people who spend all day in front of screens?

Happy to answer questions about the implementation.

How I repost TikTok clips to Instagram without the watermark

I repost a lot of clips to Instagram Reels and hated how the TikTok watermark kept covering subtitles and faces.

So I started saving clean versions before editing/reposting and the workflow is way better now.

Especially useful for meme pages and editing accounts.

Built a FREE, No-Ads, No-Premium Eye exercise app.

Been staring at screens too much lately, so I started building an iOS app for simple guided eye exercises using the iPhone’s TrueDepth camera.

Current exercises:

  • left/right
  • up/down
  • blinking
  • close-eye hold

The app tracks eye movement in real time, with all processing staying on-device.

Trying to keep it minimal, calming, and privacy-focused instead of feeling like a medical app.

Would love feedback:

  • Would you use something like this?
  • Any features or UI ideas?
  • What would make it annoying?
