Handling pet vet bills

Just want to take a minute to vent because I recently had a horrible scare with my dog who has pneumonia and hand to spend Friday night in the ICU on oxygen. I’m lucky to be in a position where I can afford the cost (and thankfully have insurance as well) but couldn’t believe that I was required to pay over $5,000 upfront for them to help him.

I had just booked a trip on my credit card (actually ended up canceling because he was supposed to join me and but now needs a month of rest) and had to immediately pay down my balance in the waiting room to charge it. I was thinking “wow it’s a good thing I have the money in my checking account because it takes multiple days to transfer from my hys account and I can’t pay directly from that”. I would’ve paid anything I could for him but what do people that literally don’t have the cash on hand. Even with insurance you have to be able to pay upfront before they reimburse you. I just couldn’t believe that your beloved pets like can be on the line like that and you have to be ready to pay a sum like that instantly.

Has anyone ever been in that situation and been given time to pay? At this point I feel like I need to always have 10K in my checking account just in case.

Anyone have a recommendation for a dog backpack for a medium size (29-30 lb) dog? We’ve tried little chonk and similar but he will not lay down or allow himself to be zipped into it.

I found one that looks perfect but it’s a UK brand (Tarigs) and by the time I pay for the shipping and customs costs to the US it’s almost $600 (and that’s without even knowing if it would work or how much I would have to pay to return it).

Fireworks are way overhyped and not worth all the harm they do.

Fireworks are horrifying and cause severe panic and stress for dogs, cats, birds, veterans suffering from PTSD, and all wildlife. They leave debris that can be toxic and cause severe organ failure for the animals (domestic and wild) if ingested. Fireworks just feel like such a selfish and unnecessary act when there are so many other less harmful ways to celebrate.

Good places to donate slightly used dog supplies?

I have a Midwest double door crate (in perfect condition) that I bought for my rescue pup before I knew how big he would get in addition to a nice barely used washable tempurpedic bed and other puppy food and supplies I would love to donate. Does anyone have recommendations for where to donate this type of dog supplies (ideally near the west side)?

Did anyone move from LA to Santa Barbara? How do you like living there in comparison?

I just got back to LA after spending a few days in Santa Barbara and loved it there. I grew up in LA and had been to SB before but only for day trips and to visit friends at UCSB when I was younger. It was so peaceful there I absolutely loved it! So quick to get around everywhere, parking was a breeze, the beaches were quiet, and all the locals I met seemed extremely down to earth. I met one person that said he moved from LA and it was the best decision he ever made. Curious how many others moved and how you like it in comparison.

Why does the Bigg Chill get so much hype and praise? Am I the only one that thinks it’s extremely overrated?

I saw a girl on TikTok say she would drive all the way from San Diego for it and that it’s number one froyo she’s ever had. I live a mile away and never go. I’m much rather have gogreek or pretty so many other froyo places.

Dog boarding recs that your dog actually gets excited for?

Has anyone found a place your dog is happy to go to when you leave town? I’ve tried a few different daycares and he doesn’t seem to like the cage playgroup type (I think it reminds him of the shelter). I have a 5 day trip coming up which will be my first time leaving since I adopted him. I’m in Westwood/Century city so ideally somewhere not too far so I can drop off before my flight and pick up in the evening when I’m back.

Reactive off leash dog tried to attack my on leash dog (below) at Will Rodgers

Today after a hike I stopped by Will Rodgers beach with my rescue baby because he had never been to the beach and it wasn’t too busy. He was having the best time of his life (on the leash the entire time) running along the shore with me, scaring birds away, sniffing the ground, etc. when all of the sudden this little black doodle dog (mine is only around 30 lbs but it was smaller than him) ran up off leash growling and tried to attack him. Luckily I was able to pull him away and the other dog’s owner came to grab them but it was genuinely terrifying and the reaction from the owner made me think this isn’t unusual for their dog.

I’ve heard so many horror stories of horrific attacks happening like this and I can’t understand why people with reactive dogs let them off leash and take the risk (my guy has a great temperament but he might not have been so lucky with a different one). Will Rodgers isn’t technically a dog park (and everyone else I saw with a dog had it on a leash or it was just chilling minding its own business in the shade) so why take a reactive dog off leash there and potentially ruin it for the people that have theirs on one (or extremely well trained) and aren’t causing any issues?

People around saw and checked on my dog and it was just the saddest thing how his gigantic smile turned to fear. If you have a reactive dog please keep them on leash in public spaces.

What’s up with all the dog hate on Reddit?

Every single day I see another post on the Los Angeles and/or San Francisco subs complaining about dogs in public. A lot of the posts don’t even mention the dogs doing anything wrong or disruptive. I saw one on the SF post complaining about dogs running around in an open field that “wasn’t technically a dog park”. Someone said they thought it was fine as long as people pick up after their dogs and the OP responded about how they don’t care because of the remnants left on the grass? Like there’s no way to win.

Also the LA one constantly complains about things I never actually see happen. It feels so forced like some of the posts are really just people mad about seeing dogs exist in public (including outside). I don’t know anyone that actually feels this and don’t really see any of the hate on other social media sites. Has anyone else noticed this on here?

This little guy (9 months) is nearly 30 lbs and has super strength and jumping and sniff skills. No one believes me when I say his biggest breeds are Chihuahua are min pin. He’s pulled me off my feet with how strong he is and we’ve worked with two different reputable trainers who commented on his strength and didn’t even believe me until they walked and held the leash themselves. One trainer thought he was at least half Doberman. Everyone that sees him thinks he’s a hound and that he must be part vizsla or ridgeback. We met a dog the other day that’s 25% malinois and 25% German Shephard that’s the same size as him. Everyone comments on his strength and food drive too. He doesn’t give up and he can jump 3-4 feet in the air when he wants a treat or when he’s playing and jumps over a full size Shephard or golden retriever with ease. He also has super scent and can smell food from 100s of yards away before any other dog. He also has like four inches of extra skin around his neck that you only really see with working breed dogs. Has anyone else experienced this with a mixed dog? I’m not denying the results because wisdom panel was similar but it’s just very strange and there’s no standard training approach that works for him because he seems to have qualities of so many different breeds. I love him so much and just want him to what’s right for him.

I paid over $100 for a tank of gas yesterday. The national average is $4.40 but it’s nearly $7 ($6.60 is what I paid yesterday) at all the gas stations close to me. I’m in a decent financial situation but this still feels unmanageable so I can’t imagine how others are feeling. Is anyone else feeling like they have no choice but to start looking at a tesla at this point?

I was so excited when embark linked me to his mother who was actually adopted two days after him but on the opposite side of the country (she’s in Connecticut and we’re in LA). I was really hoping to hear back on what they know about her. I assume she was brought there from the same shelter as he came from (kern county in CA). All I know is he was found (I believe alone) on a street in Bakersfield at four months old so finding out more about his mother could help a lot. It’s been a few months now and I haven’t heard back. They were both adopted in January of this year so it’s not like the test was a long time ago or anything. Has anyone else had this issue? Should I reach out again?
