5 year old doesn’t love himself

We were reading a sonic comic, for reference it’s one about a character named soleil who is in a circus and whose parents have too high expectations for him so he runs away.

After, my 5 year old told me he doesn’t like himself. He wishes he were perfect and didn’t make mistakes. He doesn’t like that he doesn’t know anything and that he has to sound words out.

We do a lot of “it’s ok to make mistakes” and “you can’t get good without mistakes” and you HAVE to make mistakes, mommy and daddy make mistakes etc. etc. So, I try to normalize that. I try to praise effort. Dad is less good at that.

Anyway does this sound normal or do I have some maladaptive perfectionism going on?

Skincare with FSA

What have y’all managed to successfully pay for with your FSA? Sorry this is an American question but open enrollment is in a couple of months.

I’m so mad. I didn’t know sunscreen was FSA eligible. I bout a ton at the start of summer! I bet someone else here didn’t know that either.

I pay for my tret with FSA money obviously and I know acne products are generally allowed.

I’m in my 40s. I use tret. I use sunscreen and occasionally moisturize. Topical estrogen cream?

What about lasers for redness (I had a diagnosis of minor rosacea) or other procedures?

Has anyone gotten their Japanese/Korean sunscreen products with FSA money?

Kindergarten- non-competitive math games for age 5

Could use help - my 5 year old refuses to play “winning” games (eg race, do the activity first, get more objects, etc.) I got him sum swamp and he enjoyed it and won! But didn’t want to play again because he was afraid he’d lose. We are working on that part but apparently it’s normal.

He likes math and number time before bed, so that’s what I’m targeting. He can do simple addition/subtraction. Also open to logic type math, patters, bigger/less than, etc. thanks!

Museum specimen - HTA in the wild?

I know nothing about crystals but for some reason this sub is in my feed and because of y’all I am now judgy about people calling heat treated amethyst “citrine.”

So anyway I saw this specimen at a reputable museum and to me this looks like HTA but it’s labeled citrine.

Why would a museum accept an altered amethyst? Or maybe it is real citrine.

Oh COME ON - wet bed

My son pees through his pull-up even with two sposies in it. Even with no water within an hour of bed. He’s on a bed pad and leaks onto that about 50% of the time.

SO my genius idea tonight was to wake him to pee before I went to bed. So I sat him on the toilet. Then he asked for water, which my husband gave him, and he crushed it. Didn’t pee. Then when I put him back down he rolled off the bed pad.

So frustrating. I can’t wait for his pee hormone or whatever to get its shit together.

MIL uses house as dumping ground for her sentimental items

This is a same old story. MILs and their shit and excessive gifts. Mugs with cats and flamingos. Leopard print tea towels. So many tea towels. Random stuff for the kid. Then she says he has too many toys. lol.

Anyway what this post is really about, instead of excessive landfill gifts and cheap plastic shit, she dumps her sentimental items on us.

Over the years I have accepted many nice items from her - furniture, antiques, glass, mirrors, etc. They are good quality. I like those things and am glad to have them in my home.

When we picked up the bulk of the furniture shortly after moving, however, she without asking loaded nine large rubbermaids of “sentimental” stuff into our loading truck. We were overwhelmed because it was moving day basically and had no idea what was in them and just took them.

Since then it’s just been more Rubbermaids of stuff. I have no idea where she keeps them, or how many are left. She also just brings random shit. An enormous turtle shell. Large concrete decorative pavers. His sister’s 30+ year old alarm clock. Plants I can’t use because I’m out of space.

SO MUCH sentimental shit. Some blanket a lady who she used to know made my husband. Blankets his great aunt made for her own children (husbands aunt/uncle he never even talks to). MIL didn’t even like that sister. Two sets of mediocre and worthless but old silverware from her aunt and parents.

A kimono her uncle got in Japan during the war that we might want to give to a museum. Letters her aunt wrote to someone neither my husband nor I know 40 years ago. My MIL’s childhood books, combs, knick knacks, etc. Someone’s crappy coin collection. (Sold that, donated the proceeds to my kid’s college fund).

Fortunately our house flooded at one point and about 4 of the rubbermaids of old 40+ year old report cards, books, drawings, and other items did not survive. We still get shit about how our flood destroyed her favorite horse book.

My husband doesnt want this shit either but his apparent plan is to store it all and throw it out when she’s dead. That old bird has 20+ years in her.

It came to a head this morning because last time she brought a record player and my husband’s old childhood records and VHS tapes taped off tv. (We do not have a VHS player). We already had a record player.

It’s all been sitting by my front door for a month (with a foot long dead turtle shell she brought) and he wasn’t dealing with it. I put the record player in my kid’s closet and the records with my husband’s collection.

I was told I should just throw out the record player and records because I hate it.

Then, as my husband was hate cleaning the house he found a corner with a bunch of mouse shit where they’d obviously been building a nest inside a box of bulbs. That his mother sent and I hadn’t asked for or had time to plant. That pissed him off even worse - at her or me I have no idea.

He tells me that I’m always trying to get rid of her stuff. Yes this is true but she brings/gifts 10x more shit than any other relative so ??.

Anyway we’re not talking but at least the house is clean.

Stop tret at the beach?

Heading to the beach next week with my floppy hat, Korean & Japanese sunscreens, and hoodie rashguard.

Do people stop tret for beach vacations? I’m on 0.025 daily without issue. But I’ll be rubbing/washing my face a lot, saltwater, chlorine, and of course the sun. I’m wondering if it’s just better to lay off a week, but don’t want to lose too much ground.

ELI5 - 10s places (5 year old)

My 5 year old wants to know why one hundred and one isn’t written like 1001 (one hundred with a 1 tacked on). I tried to draw a

100
+1
——-

And show how the numbers carried down to be 101 with only 3 numbers and he just keeps asking why and I can’t answer him. I think this is about ones, tens, hundreds places but I have no idea how to explain that, never mind explain it to an angry child.

Anyone have a good age appropriate explanation?

EDIT: SO many great suggestions! My son watches number blocks so he knows 2 tens in 20, 3 tens in 30, etc. I will try the stick bundles for a better visual of 10 groups. And I will watch out for the confusing “and” verbiage like one hundred AND one vs. one hundred one.

Hopefully next time we go to the pizza place (where he saw the address number on the window) I’ll be better prepared!

Do I have to take Mag?

My Vitamin D was low so my doctor said take that. I added vitamin K and magnesium (glycinate, 400.) for the reasons routinely discussed on this sub. the mag makes me feel foggy in the am, unmotivated, and just blah.

I stopped it and feel better. Is it ok to ditch the magnesium or am I setting myself up for some other issue?

Typical practice policies

I am trying to set up an appointment for my child with a practice that has been pursuing (offering) appointments with their practitioners as they come up.

Are these routine policies?

- 1x out of pocket $50 cost for “items” to be used with my child (no description, billed to cc on file)
- if my child cannot make an appointment for a non emergency reason we have to make it up in 20 days or pay a fee.
- can’t get an out of pocket/copay estimate until I schedule an initial eval and go through all of the intake paperwork (not just insurance info)
- $75 OOP fee for appointments cancelled less than 24 hours before for “non emergency” issues
- emergency issues apparently may or may not include “colds” (they say it’s case by case basis) so if you get there and your child is too sick, they charge the $75 fee.
- I’m maybe being petty, but they called it Protracted Health Information in the disclosures but managed to have about 134 places to initial to indicate my understanding of make up schedules, extra fees, etc etc.

I’m a big believer in believing someone when they tell you who they are. I’m just getting a “mill” feeling but this is only the second SLP practice I’ve dealt with.

Of course now I’m all annoyed because I’ve gone through heck and back coordinating for these appointments and am just getting an icky feeling. However, I fully acknowledge I routinely get annoyed at having to fill out medical paperwork, so maybe I’m in the wrong.

Anyway, do these policies look normal?

EDIT: I can’t add photos, but here are the “explanations” of the $50 fee.

“This fee covers materials used during sessions, any homework materials sent home, and the additional time and documentation involved with the evaluation process.”

Also, when I doubled down and asked what the “materials” actually were :

“The MYO tools fee covers materials and supplies used throughout treatment and at home, as well as additional resources and preparation related to the evaluation and therapy process. Since every child's treatment plan is different, the exact materials used can vary from patient to patient.”

So basically it seems like they might think k insurance doesn’t reimburse enough for the initial evaluation but they won’t come out and say it. Interesting the “everyone is different” line yet the fee remains the same. Maybe I’m being uncharitable.

off track on phonics

My son and I are stuck. I was doing 100 ez lessons with him, which he did very well at. Over time it (obviously) got harder and he started resisting so we got stuck at about lesson 50. I don’t want to force it and make him hate reading.

So we started on Bob books for a while to reset and rebuild his confidence, which were ok, but I feel like we’ve deviated from phonics based learning for the worse. He learned some sight words at school and we did the kindergarten sight word Bob books and now he’s just looking at the pictures and guessing.

I started a sticker chart a few days back to encourage sounding out again so hopefully that will help reset. My real question is where do I go from here? I don’t know how to teach the next steps (long vowels, consonant blends) if I don’t have a structured curriculum, and he won’t do 100 ez lessons.

Is there another program I can use in 10 minute increments each night?

This is my HG, or it was before the tariffs etc. where can I get the real non-American version? US based, obviously. I’ve done Yesstyle before but not since the tariffs and new focus on seizing imported beauty/supplements etc.

I’d like to teach my kindergartner to apply face sunscreen himself so he can use it at school. We always use sunscreen so he is generally familiar with it. His teacher does not or cannot apply it, which is fine.

I worry he’ll get it in his eyes or botch the coverage though. So if anyone has found some that works well for self application at this age I’m all ears. Stick, pump, regular squeeze bottle? Probably not spray. He has a cubby he can access. Prefer chemical over barrier because I think barrier would be more difficult. No brand preference. Also looking for any good kids videos about application. Thanks.
