Hiking with 8 month old

I’m planning a trip here for the first time at the end of August with my husband and 8 month old. Looking for advice on what trails/areas we should hit up!! Here some info about our trip:

-Trip is 7 non travel days
-Going with 6 other people but we have our own car so we can branch off
-We have the Osprey Poco carrier
-Staying near Port Angeles
-Plan on visiting Forks, WA and Victoria, BC (we all have passports)
-We are massive foodies!!
-We would love to visit hot springs at some point (will trade off baby with friends to make this work!)
-Looking to avoid trails with any scrambling or acute elevation gain but open to several mile long hikes (maybe under 7mi unless very flat)

Thanks in advance!

Car seats…

Turo owners. How do you handle car seats?

Looking to rent my first time through Turo and will have an 8 month old; so I’ll need a car seat. I’m afraid to fly with my own car seat for the risk of it being damaged by the airline and we end up stranded.

Is it common as an option? Will I be able to know the info on a car seat and its history before accepting it?

Open to any and all advice :)

Airport/general travel logistics

FTM USA will be traveling with 8 month old for a week long hiking trip in Washington state. What should I be prepared for at the airports?

-Baby is a lap seat for all flights

-We don’t plan on bringing our car seat, we are renting a Turo with one when we arrive. Does everyone just leave their cars at their home airport? 😬

-Baby is exclusively formula fed but we are starting solids already. I’ve seen mixed issues with TSA and formula and I’m so nervous about it…how will I get through with bottles full of purified water for the flights? How do I prevent TSA from digging through my unopened can of formula???? I’m worried about contamination 🤦‍♀️

-I’m bringing a pack and play for sleep, an Osprey POCO, and the Pop n Sit. Do I need to put those altogether in their own bag for the flight? We are trying to check as few things as possible

Thanks in advance! Also open to any and all advice you feel like throwing my way!!!!

Starting water?

When did you start giving water??

I always assumed we would give like 1-2oz alongside starting solids but our pediatrician wants to wait until my LOs 9 month check up to discuss it before we introduce it. Seems weird to me tbh everywhere I have read states 6 months? Honestly assumed it would help prevent constipation with all the new foods. So I’m just curious…

LO is a normal and healthy 6 month old, EFF, and we have given several solids but we aren’t consistent with it yet.

Daycare food prep?

What products did you use to store food for baby for daycare?

LO is just starting solids and I’m not sure what’s best to bring the food in? I want to prep ahead for the week but feeling overwhelmed logistically

6 month old & formula

How much formula did you give your 6 month old?

We have just started introducing solids but very slowly. LO is 74th/85th percentile for weight and height and drinks about 30oz of formula a day, 5 bottles of 6oz.

We’ve been having split nights for a week and no matter what I try, she won’t go back down without a bottle which puts her at 36oz in a 24 hour period. (I’ve tried less than a full bottle and she will not have it)

The pediatrician didn’t seem bothered by this but also mentioned upping her daytime bottles to 4 bottles of 8oz, so 32oz total but if we still have split nights that’s going to put her at an even higher average over 24 hours and I’m just worried it’s too much.

Buying Activity Center for daycare?

USA- My LO is almost 6 months old so daycare is about to start her in their other “containers” during the day.

I noticed they literally only have walkers and jumpers which I read is not good for hip development and puts a lot of strain on them and also encourages toe walking. They have no activity centers with an adjustable platform (like the Skip Hop) which I would be fine with as long as it was adjusted to her height.

So 2 questions… am I unreasonable that I don’t want her in these containers at all? And would it be weird to purchase an activity center for the daycare myself? (For all the kids to use ofc)

Olympic trail recommendations

We’re visiting Olympic for the first time in August and taking our daughter who will be 8 months old then. Looking for advice on what trails would be best for us!

-We have the Osprey Poco to carry her
-We are fine with several mile hikes but want to avoid scrambling and acute elevation gain
-We will be there a full week staying near Port Angeles
-We are fine to drive 2-2.5 hours from the city but would rather stay in a single area for a majority of the day if so
-Planning at least a day trip to Forks

Let me know if you have any other tips on hiking with a little one! It’ll be our first big trip as a family

How are we giving meds to infants??????

5 month old has a fever and I have tried so many ways to give this girl medicine to help her feel better.

We have tried the Frida pacifier dispenser, mixing it into her full bottle, mixing it into just 1oz, squirting it into a cheek a tiny bit at a time, also tried not a tiny bit out of desperation, tried blowing in her face to trigger the reflex while squirting it into her cheek, laid back slightly, sat up all the way, even while she’s asleep. I’ve tried different brands and different flavors —she gags or vomits. I can’t even touch the Frida pacifier to her lips even while she’s dead asleep or she gags super hard.

How does she know???????? wtf am I supposed to do?????

When to go to urgent care?

My 5 month old has a 101.4 fever and is very tired and fussy if not being held but eating well having normal diapers, runny nose but breathing is fine etc. The pediatrician said we could call and someone would be there to help but apparently that was a lie and there is no one for me to speak to today for some reason.

I see conflicting things online. I’m just not sure if I should just let her rest and keep her home or go to urgent care. Not really sure what they would even do for her if we went tbh. I’m frustrated I cannot speak to her doctors office about this though.

Babies and skills

Babies are so funny.

My 5 month old LO sat independently for several seconds, multiple times a day, for three days in a row. I’m thinking of all the fun stuff we’re gonna get to do now I can just *sit* her somewhere hands free and she will tolerate her upseat for longer omg starting solids super soon etcetc

Yeah no. She promptly dropped that skill for learning how to screech like a banshee tongue out and everything. Oh, and that she now must sleep face down and wake up very mad about it and get too frustrated to remember how to roll back.

It’s been 2 weeks and still no more independent sitting 😂 🤪 maybe soon haha

———

Yes! I know she’s still young for this skill. She’s met most physical skills pretty early! Not trying to rush her or anything and not complaining or worried; I really just find how babies learn to be sooo funny and interesting!

Daycare workers and sleep

A bit of a rant more than anything lol but do daycare workers just… not know about infant sleep??? Every time I drop of my 5 month old in the morning she is as happy as can be and very smiley, the baby room leader always makes comments like “oh you’re just so happy in the morning!” But then follows that with how by the afternoon she is very cranky. My girl sleeps M A Y B E an hour total at daycare so like of course she’s more fussy by 3pm she’s been awake nearly 10 hours by then! Like??? 😐 that’s like us being awake for two flippin days. I also wouldn’t be happy. Just bothers me like how do they not realize the why? My girl is such a happy baby I guess I’m annoyed she’s getting unwarranted criticism because she is exhausted by the end of the day 😅

Sigh.

Anyways.

Babysitting sleeping baby?

What would you pay a close friend to stay in your home and watch your baby for 2 hours in the evening? LO is 5 months old and would already be asleep in her crib. Baby is super reliable with sleep and almost never wakes before morning so literally they would just need to keep an eye on the monitor and be kind of quiet until we get back lol

Rolling in sleep help

My LO is 5 months old and has been rolling back to belly for over 2 months now, she has zero interest in rolling belly to back despite my efforts.

Never had any issues with night sleep but the last four nights she has rolled over onto her belly and has to be rolled back like five times a night because she wakes up screaming because she is stuck 🥲 I really thought we dodged this since she hasn’t done it a single time in 2 entire months!

How long did this last for you? Is there anything I can do about it???? We do soooooooo sooo much tummy time idk how she isn’t so sick of it

Toy rotation questions

At what age did you start a type of toy rotation?

How many rotations did you have?

How did you decide what toys are in which rotation? (Like did you separate by skill/size/function/random)

Did you have any toys that were “just for fun” and not necessarily focused on something developmental? (Is that even a thing?)

How did you decide it was time to move on from a toy and replace it with something else?

How often did you rotate?

Did you have certain toys that always stayed out no matter what?

When did you stop?

Thanks in advance!! My LO is 5 months old but I’m very much a planner and want to start getting prepared! We already do a super mild type of rotation but she’s so little everything is endlessly interesting right now

Socially awkward mom help

So like… what all are we saying/doing at daycare pick up and drop off? I’m so fucking socially inept in an unfamiliar setting (at my job I’m literally public facing and do fine BUT IVE LEARNED THAT LMAOOOOO) and I usually don’t say much to the workers just have a nice day and tell them when she last ate and to please apply cream if she’s dealing with a diaper rash currently. I feel like they are put off by me but I might be projecting my own insecurities there 😂😅

Guys I’m so awkward plz help

BLW and daycare?

So how does baby led weaning and daycare work or how did you personally go about it? My daycare states that parent should provide solids until baby is able to eat what the daycare provides.

At this time, the only meal I would be able to sit down and do with her would be dinner.

Should I just wait and do BLW only at home until she is older? LO is 5 months currently and showing all signs of readiness.

Pulling up on sleep sack help!

My LO is 5 months old and has just discovered her sleep sack. Last night while she woke up between sleep cycles and was trying to go back to sleep, I saw her grab at the collar of the sack and pull it up to chew on it but she pulled more and it was almost covering her nose and mouth. Thankfully, it’s getting to be too short on her so when she moves her feet it pulls it down but uhhhh that freaked me out. It’s the type of sleep sack that is like a tank top cut up top, not a long sleeve, so it’s not super tight around her neck and arms.

I was about to order her the next size up but now I’m scared she’s going to accidentally smother herself 🫠 Not sure what I should do! She sleeps so well so I want to keep her in a type of sleep sack for now but idk if I should get a different type or just ditch them altogether???
