Flyfishers Guide to Michigan

I picked up the new version by Jon Osborn via Half Priced Books today. Upon opening there is a note and picture. I want to say that it’s printed in the book but can’t for certain. Anyone here have the new version and can confirm this is in all copies or is this a gift note from the giver?
Edited for spelling

A few smallest from throughout the state

First two off the family break wall on the St.clair river. The last bigger one is from the manistee just below the dam at the fishing pier. All 3 caught by my sons on walmart clearance bombers they bought themselves last fall.

I wanna catch some Channel Catfish

Looking to get back into fishing this summer. Fished some last summer, caught a handful of bass and a pike but thats it. Never caught any cats before but I really want to. Theres some good spots near me, including a stocked pond. Not sure where to start though. I was planning on setting up 2 rods, one with nightcrawlers and another with chicken liver or hot dogs with koolaid, something weird like that. From what i've seen best bet is circle hook with an egg sinker and a leader but i could be mistaken. Any other tips would be appreciated. Would love to get into catching some cats. Im in se MI, Macomb county btw.

One of my favorite smallmouth lakes in Michigan

One of my favorite lakes in Michigan to smallmouth fish. Video is in the comments below if you would like to see where. They love spinnerbaits on that lake.

I'm planning a fishing trip in Michigan without a boat. Where are the absolute best world-class locations for wading or shore fishing? Like major river runs for salmon/trout or famous Great Lakes pierheads? Thanks in advance!

Questions about Salmon Fishing West Michigan Piers

Looking for some guidance on fishing Lake Michigan Piers starting in August. (Ludington / Grand Haven / Manistee)

My Dad passed away in December and my uncle shortly after and they are the two people I would go to for recommendations / guidance on these types of questions.

I want to take my son out to the piers like my dad did with me, but I for the life of me cannot remember the specifics.

Currently have two medium heavy rods with 3000 shimanos - Is this enough?

What do you typically use lure wise? I know it's spoons / blades but any recommendations on which ones?

What time is the best time to start making our way over? I remember fishing near dusk / overnight as a kid but I can't remember the details of time of year vividly. I remember August for sure and more towards the end of September for places like Tippy Dam and up river.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I just wish I could remember more at this point.

Boat Suggestion

Hi all, I’m looking to get into a 14’ aluminum boat for cruising up and down rivers to camp and fish and also do a bit of lake fishing.

I’m hoping for some recommendations on boat style. I know flat bottom is better for shallow rivers but not very stable for larger lakes.

Anyone have any first hand experience running both rivers and lakes?

4 more Master Angler gills from our lake up north

I’ve posted before about just how incredible our lake is for gills. My dad and I went out Friday originally setting out to bass fish, but ended up more on the gills. Fished about 7:30PM to dark. never really moved. I don’t know any other lake that consistently and easily produces gills this size, but it’s been like this my whole life (I’m about to turn 38). We’re truly blessed with it, although my parents are selling and moving sometime this year. We ended up catching about 25 in total with 17 on the stringer. Smallest keeper was 8.5” and the next smallest that the eyeball test said clearly was the next smallest was 9”. Also it‘s not common we’ll keep gills, but once or twice a year we’ll get a nice dinner of them as they’re my favorite freshwater fish to eat and the only ones my mom will eat.

St Ignace Kayak

Anyone have any luck fishing from a kayak in the straits in the st ignace area? I like going there every mid-July and I like to kayak out pretty deep. I’m thinking of trying to fish far out there. I’m staying in the Pte La Barbe road area. I’ve had trouble finding other inland spots nearby. Anybody have any suggestions or advice on fishing in that area?

Surgeon gave me the green light to fish with no restrictions!

I was cleared from shoulder surgery for “light fishing” in mid May. Spent that time figuring out what the wacky worm.
Got cleared fully (no kayak yet) last week. Went out Sunday morning, spent 3 hours hiking and wading to a spot that is relatively remote.
First cast, PB smallie. Second cast, bigger PB smallie.
7 in total! Fantastic way to start my season!
Felt like a damn YouTuber talking to the fish and yelling PB! PB!
I know the one on the shore shouldn’t be on there. He was real unhappy and was flopping around as I was trying to get a picture.

Michigan Fishing Trip

I live in Michigan and would like to spend the next 2 weeks camping and fishing a bunch of places. Last month spent a week all over the northern LP and only caught bluegill, would love to catch anything besides pan fish.

Anywhere in Michigan is game, UP or LP. Where should I go?
