Confused with registration process

Hi, I'm an incoming student, and I'm enrolled for Fall 2026. I have registered for two classes for this upcoming semester on OSCAR but I didn't get prompted to pay nor did I get access to the classes or guided in there. Can someone point me towards how this is going to work? Apologies if this is a stupid question as I don't seem to get any comms regarding that.

Time Series Analysis vs. Data Mining & Statistical Learning

Hey everyone! I could really use some advice on which stats class to take.

I’ve already taken regression and now I need one more statistics course. Regression is taught by the same instructor as TSA so I am little nervous about that. I’m trying to decide between:

  • Time Series Analysis ISYE 6402 (TSA)
  • Data Mining & Statistical Learning ISYE 7406 (DSML)

I’ve looked through the course reviews and grade distributions for both, but I still can’t figure out which one would be the better choice. For anyone who has taken either (or both), which would you recommend? I’d especially love to hear about the workload, difficulty, how interesting/useful you found the material, and whether you’d recommend taking it alongside CSE 6242 so I want the easier and more beneficial class.

This will be my final semester and after these classes I will be done!! Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

MGT 8823 LSS Green Belt Certificates

Has anyone that was enrolled in MGT 8823 gotten their LSS Green Belt Certificate yet?

There's a single post on Ed Discussion asking about it, to which they said they would be available "in the next week" two weeks ago.

How are they delivered? The course is showing as an archived course in Canvas now. I got a an 88 total on the project, according to canvas, and an A in the class, submitted to OSCAR, so I'm pretty sure I met the requirements.

Has anyone received their certificate?

Looking for some advice to get out of academic probation

Hey everyone,

I’m feeling discouraged and could use a reality check. I just hit academic probation with a 2.0 GPA after getting two C's (CSE 6040 and MGT 6201). Seeing so many people here pull A's makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong, or if this program is even right for me.

My Questions:
Bouncing Back: If you dug yourself out of academic probation, what exactly did you change about your study habits?

Time Management: How are you actually structuring your weeks? Especially looking for advice from those balancing a high-stress career with the coursework.

Sanity Check: Am I just drastically underestimating the weekly hours required, or should I reconsider if I actually have the bandwidth for this degree right now?

Appreciate any actionable advice you can share!

Non-Technical Background OMSA

Hello,

I am starting CSE6040 Computing for Data Analytics this fall as my first class I have been using the Computing in Python edX course to prepare (i only audit the course) and getting more live practice from YouTube videos, CodeWars, and using my notes from the class to feed Claude so they can also make coding practice for me. I see so many people here discuss how difficult it is. I have a nontechnical background, but I have always done well in math, and currently tutor pre-calc. I also have experience with SQL BUT I do not know how to do complex joins I would say I am intermediate. I don't mind paying for a tutor and studying extra to make sure I get an A, but the posts I'm seeing kinda scare me!! I am only taking this class and will be doing some review of R (or open to any other topics I should review) before my spring semester. Any tips? Ideas? Please be aimed at helping me succeed.

Should I Continue A track or Jump to B track ?

Hello Everyone , I have a lot going on in my life right now, and I really don’t want another math or coding-heavy class 😢 i only have DVA, Practicum, and one A elective left. already taken Optimization, HDDA, Bayesian, and DMSL and got A’s in all of them. At first , I was thinking about TSA, Regression, or Prob Models, but they seem pretty intense, and I don’t want to grind for hours just to get through a class right now. I am also wondering if switching to the B track makes sense, although I think I’d have to take two extra courses. Are there any lighter courses with a manageable workload that I haven’t taken yet?
Thank you 🙏

BSc EE/IE + MBA + OMSA: What do you do now?

Edit: only thing I’ve completed here is the mba.

If you pivoted from a none technical career and earned these degrees or similar, what do you do now?

I know experience is important, but at times degrees get you through the door first.

Just curious what careers/roles people with this combination ended up in.

2026 OMSA/OMSCS/OMSCY Bay Area Summer Meetup in San Jose on August 22

Hi everyone, we have a meetup coming up in San Jose, CA!

It's the end of another semester! Come hang out with us in SJ. Celebrate, commiserate, whatever. It's a casual hangout, so you don't need to RSVP unless you really want to. Feel free to share this on around OMSA, OMSCS, and OMSCY!

  • Transportation: It's a 20min walk from the SJ Diridon Caltrain station and even closer on VTA, so it is convenient on public transit from SF. Some of us will be coming on Caltrain so come on to the #us-bay_area channel on OMSA Slack to coordinate riding and walking together! We encourage carpooling too. Post a thread in this channel for carpool coordination.
  • Parking: The San Pedro Square parking garage offers the first 90 minutes free and then $1 every 15 minutes capped at $10. There is very limited street parking. Details: We'll find some tables at San Pedro Square Market so be sure to wear your OMSA shirt to help people with identifying us. Partners are welcome, it would be lovely to show some appreciation to the people supporting us.
  • Details: We'll find some tables at San Pedro Square Market so be sure to wear your OMS shirt to help people with identifying us.
  • Attendees: All OMS students and alumni are welcome. Partners are welcome; it would be lovely to show some appreciation to the people supporting us. Applicants and new students are welcome as well. Honestly, feel free to bring anyone willing to give out job referrals too 😄
  • Share this with your OMS friends in the other programs. See you there!

Sim 6644 summer 2026 - how'd y'all do?

I got 85% overall and thought I could curve up to an A... nope still stuck at B. How'd everyone else do?

Not complaining at all, I really enjoyed the course.

edit: damn I'm seeing a bunch of folks reporting +90%, that might explain this semesters' curve. ya'll are too smart! also whoever is downvoting other people's posts just for sharing their grade need to get a life.

Looking for the syllabus/course schedule for IYSE 6414 Regression Analysis

My employer may be willing to cover the cost of the course depending on whether it covers certain topics relevant to my work. Does anyone have a syllabus, course schedule, or detailed list of the topics covered? I'd especially appreciate details about how much depth the course goes into for each topic. Thanks!

Having a kid during the program

Hello All,

I am having my first kid during the program. I have completed 4 courses so far (6501, Reg, DACI, CSE6040). I was able to get out of MGT 8803. I am worried about not being able to complete the program. I am thinking about just staying in B track and doing Sim before my child is born and then just doing B-track electives and getting out as easily as possible. I am likely going to aim for management positions in the future rather than technical roles anyways.

Is this a solid plan?

Thoughts on Bayes with the Practicum?

I originally was planning on taking one class at a time through to the end, and was going to take DMSL (7406) to end the program with the practicum, however I've heard there's a ton of overlap with CDA. Bayesian statistics intrigues me, but I've heard bad things about the class being hard/pointless/outdated, and that it should be taken alone.

I've rearranged my schedule as we are now expecting an addition to the family in April/May timeframe, and I'm probably going to need next summer off, and I've moved 6203 to be taken with 6242 so I have the pre-req for the practicum taken care of.

For anyone who has taken Bayes in the past couple of years, have they changed anything? Chatting with Google AI it seems like it uses WinBUGS which is apparently outdated, but then some reviews mention using PyMC which apparently is far more widely used in industry. Is it both? I'm interested in it's use in AI/ML and finance applications, and even if the class half teaches it, it carves out time for me to do my own self learning, with a credential on my resume.

Should I stick with my original plan and just do DMSL+Prac in Fall 27 to finish out the program, or is Bayes+Prac going to be doable with a 3-4 month old newborn at home while also working full time? I guess I could always take Bayes after graduating, but I think the chances of that actually happening are going to be very slim to none.

For reference, I've had all As up until this point, and have an engineering undergrad, so math isn't too hard for me, but the only graduate level/calculus-based statistics exposure I've ever had was Sim this Spring. Also, I opted out of 8803 so one of the MGT electives fills that requirement.

Course sequencing feedback — starting Spring 2027 + curious about research opportunities

Starting OMSA in Spring 2027 and planning to take one course per semester initially:

- Spring 2027: ISYE 6501 — Intro to Analytics Modeling

- Summer 2027: MGT 6201 — Business Fundamentals for Analytics

- Fall 2027: CSE 6040 — Computing for Data Analysis

My thinking is to start with 6501 to build a broad analytics/modeling foundation, use the shorter summer term for what I expect to be a lighter course, and take CSE 6040 in the fall. I already have a Python background, so I'm comfortable saving the computing course for later rather than using it as my introduction to programming.

Does this sequencing make sense, or would you restructure it? In particular, are there any pitfalls with taking MGT 6201 during the summer, or would you recommend swapping the order of these courses?

Separate question: research opportunities

I know OMSA isn't primarily a research-focused program, but has anyone managed to get involved with research while going through the program—whether through faculty, the practicum, or independently?

I'm interested in eventually doing more applied/research-adjacent work, particularly around analytics/data science, and I'm curious whether it's realistic to pursue something alongside OMSA or whether I'd be better off looking for research opportunities outside the program.

I'd especially appreciate input from people who are a few semesters into the program and have firsthand experience with the workload and opportunities.

Thanks!

Correct CRNs for 6040 and 6203?

Hi all, I’m starting the OMSA this fall and just registered for 6040 and 6203. There’re several course selections for each when registering, but can anyone confirm whether 85143 and 85545 are the correct CRNs for 6040 and 6203, respectively? “OAN” is the section for each.

Is ISYE 6501 worth it? Did you actually take any useful info from the class or do I opt out?

I was approved to opt out ISYE 6501 IAM but still debating if I should just replace it with an easy MGT elective or if I do take this class am I able to gain more useful knowledge than what I already have.

I don’t want to take this class just for it to be busy work in R and actually gain nothing from it and get a B in it. I also feel like a lot of jobs out there only use Python and not R

Right now, I’m planning on taking 6040 and 6203 in the fall but I originally was gonna take 6203 and 6501 before I got approved to opt out.

Would appreciate any advice on if this class is worth taking even if I got approved to opt out! Thanks!

CSE6040 as only course & limited python experience?

Hello! I know it’s been mentioned many times that we should be somewhat proficient in coding before doing CSE6040.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to take out time for it due to other commitments. That said, I will still be a full time student for the following semester. I intend to do only one module — CSE6040.

I have close to 0 experience with python, SQL except for some basic knowledge gained via a bootcamp years ago.

Would like to hear from people who have done it with similarly close to 0 experience with python — any advice?

Is it possible to do CSE6040 while learning python on the go?
