Why didn't Mrs Bennet help the girls to be more accomplished?
Mrs Bennet is often interpreted as being solely focussed on helping her girls make advantageous marriages so why didn't she make it so they were more accomplished? Surely if the opportunity of a suitor was in the area and the girls had more going for them, in terms of female skills shall we say, wouldn't they have had more of a chance?
Not getting the girls a governess just seems odd. Relying solely on the girls looks seems naive and foolish. What do you think keen readers?
Why doesn't Mrs. Bennet push Mary on Mr. Collins, instead of Lizzie?
I mean I guess it's because she assumes Lizzie will do as she's told and accept a proposal. But Mary is clearly better suited to him. Maybe Mrs. B (misogynisticly) assumes Mr. Collins won't marry anyone who's plain like Mary? Or is it that the elder sisters are intended to marry before the younger ones?
For some reason I want to think Mrs. B's smart and practical enough to see that Mary and Mr. Collins is her best bet. Is she just denser than that?
How is Mr. Bennet so chill?
Throughout the book, we see Mrs. Bennet obsessing over getting her daughters suitably married and worrying what might happen if/when her husband dies. Because if Mr. Bennet dies before his daughters have secured good matches, they would be at a risk of not having a roof over their heads. Exactly why she is so keen on Collins marrying Lizzie.
I understand that Mr. Bennet is portrayed as ‘sensible’ and wise. And he does not want his daughter to be marrying someone like Collins just out of fomo. But where is the practicality in all that? Jane and Lizzy are not too young in the book and time is against them. Mr. B has no way to predict that things would change for the good and his two eldest would find such rich husbands. It could have turned any other way honestly.
So how is he so chill about the entire thing and while Collins might be pompous and stupid but he wasn’t a bad man. Why was he so much against him?
Netherfield Park is let at last? No, it's for sale!
Egdcote House which was Netherfield Park in the 1995 series is on the market for £45 million. What if we all pitched in?
Pemberley at dusk
I live nearby so walked my dog around Chatsworth grounds after work (and let her have a swim in the river). It’s so beautiful at this time of day with no one around.
Dancing is cringe and stupid
For the most part, dancing is stupid looking.
Very few dance moves look cool or impressive and most of it reminds me of those birds that do the goofy looking mating rituals. It just screams, "Hey! Look at me! I'm moving around like an animal to attract a mate!". Like, wtf are you doing bro.
I think dancing is one of the lowest "art forms" and that people who dance cannot be taken seriously for the most part. There are few examples like Michael Jackson and others who can make dancing look cool through their mastery of it and the various illusions they incorporate in their dancing, but people this skilled are few and far between. People in the club or at parties who dance just look like sloppy ape-like clowns. I think it's great that people enjoy themselves doing it, but visually it just looks stupid.
I can appreciate women dancing because a lot of the time it's really attractive but beyond that it's pretty useless.
I added "Shut Up and Dance with Me" to the ball scene:

Last night my kid was telling me about the new Mary show, and I said I’m kind of like Mary, but maybe not, and my kid goes, “I see you as more of a Charlotte.” I was like, “Yeah, I can see that, but I didn’t marry Mr. Collins!!……….[looks at husband…..thinks about it…..looks at child……] Or did I?!?!”
Child and I crack up hysterically at the truth of the situation (LOVE my husband, btw, but we both instantly realized there are similarities!). Husband who has yet to read the book is sitting there knowing he’s missing something important.

Presenting another inspiration from Pride and Prejudice.
For me, the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice is an endless source of inspiration.

Found in the wild.
I came upon this at my local Marshall’s. Thought I would share here. I know some will appreciate this. Of course I looked at the others behind this frame secretly wishing there was Emma and S&S… but they’re all P&P :))
I just might go back and buy one and put it up in my office/studio for fun 😁

Three connected characters arriving in Hertfordshire independently - coincidence?
Pride and Prejudice is my favourite book and I’ve read it loads of times. I’ve noticed recently something about the plot that I wondered if others had seen.
The arrival of Mr Darcy, Mr Collins and Mr Wickham in Hertfordshire in a short space of time are completely unrelated. Darcy has come with Bingley, Mr Collins wants to visit the Bennets and Wickham‘s regiment is stationed there. Yet these characters all have pre-existing connections (Mr Collins through Lady Catherine) without which the story wouldn’t progress in the way that it does.
Is it just complete coincidence that these characters all happen to come into Elizabeth‘s life at the same time - or am I missing something?
I do want to clarify that I’m not criticising - I think this is as close to a perfect book as you can get, no book is 100% realistic and Jane Austen can do whatever she wants to make a good story!! Just wondered if anyone else had noticed this.
