2k Miles Road Trip Debrief in the 2026 Solterra
Hello all! I wanted to report back on a recent road trip my wife and I took in my new Solterra. I was definitely a little hesitant to take it on this trip at first. When I mapped out the trip in January I was planning on taking my Crosstrek. As fate would have it, the Crosstrek needed to be replaced before the trip. So we took the Solterra. I wanted to put together an honest review of the car and how I thought it did on a long trip. This is my first EV so some of the review is related to EVs in general.
The route: Started on the eastern side of Kansas and through Missouri down i-70, around St Louis and up Illinois to Chicago. Stayed in Chicago four nights then drove along Lake Michigan to Mackinaw City where we took a ferry to Mackinac Island, staying 3 nights there. Drove home with a stop in Illinois overnight.
Car Pros:
Super easy to drive. The safety suite is great, and I thought the lane assist and blind spot monitor was nearly perfectly calibrated. I didn't feel that way in My Crosstrek at all, the lane assist on the Crosstrek could be aggressive and the blind spot wasn't 100% accurate. Pleased to report the Solterra handled well on both accounts.
Really spacious. My wife and I bought a few things as we went along and filled the car up. Never felt like I was running out of space and didn't even need to put the seats down.
Multiple compliments. I had a couple people stop me and pointed out they loved the car. Had one lady mention to me that parked right next to us to see the Solterra up close. She said she looked at the Bz but couldn't bring herself to buy an EV yet and went with the Land Cruiser.
AC is COLD. Felt as if the AC was incredibly cold and efficient, never had it above 3 clicks and there were some hot 90+ days.
Car Cons:
Realistically, I never got really more than 200 miles of usable range. It hovered around 220 but I never pushed it past 190. Mileage tanked above 80 mph, and was noticeably better below 70. Does anyone have any idea what an optimal drive speed is? Sure you can drive slow but it got me thinking what an optimal speed would be with charging considered.
Phone Charger is meh. Doesn't do more than keep the phone at its current charge while using android auto and is right in the heat of the windshield, and can overheat the phone.
Low key, do not like having a glove box. Wife stashes makeup and napkins in there usually and the center console is getting crowded.
Other Notes:
We used ABRP which was great. We stuck to the Rivian network mostly and the stops were also in convenient spots.
Didn't do much city driving in Chicago. We stayed in the loop and walked everywhere.
Overall a great trip!
