i feel stupid

i’m not really sure what the flair for this would be but anyways.

i have a 5 1/2 month old boy and he’s fantastic and training to be a service dog! he’s great with public access in pet friendly stores and otherwise aloof/neutral to people. for some reason, he shys away and even avoids some men and i’m worried it’ll become a fear, so i hired a trainer to help build his confidence. that’s not my issues however.

i got him from what i thought at the time, was an ethical breeder. they did everything right from fully health testing to showing their dogs to CH in the UKC (multi-color standards). they raised the puppies with socialization and such too. my boy and his sister were the last to be sold so i got him at 14 weeks. so it’s been some time and im looking back at his breeders instagram page and their Good Dog and i notice they either bred, or at least promoted doodles. they breed all poodle sizes and bullies so i dont see where a “mini goldendoodle“ came from, which is why i assume they’re promoting for someone. im not a fan of doodles and dont believe they are ethical to breed so finding this out was already gross. they also just got a new future stud puppy from a merle “poodle” breeder, though the puppy itself isn’t merle. i thought about purchasing again from this breeder but i decided not to in the future because of this. im not sure what im asking for, if anything, but i just needed to vent because i feel stupid. when i got my puppy, i was so excited that i didn’t really do a thorough search into their breeder. i love my puppy regardless of this, don’t get me wrong AT ALL. that was all, really. thanks for reading

Rescue poodle from breeder

Context: got from shelter, they said she is 5 years old and that she was released from breeder. My phone won’t let me add pictures, will try to put in comments later. (Disclaimer: she is our second poodle rescue, so we know the ropes but obv any tips welcome)

Question 1: how does this breeder release work? Like that is unethical no? How did the rescue place even find out abt it? Why not just sell the dog to a customer?

Question 2: her nips have clearly been milked from, is there a way to tell when she was taken from babies? I have pics of them

Question 3: is it normal for some poodles to walk funny? I can also send a video. It’s like her legs are unstable and they are bow legged.

Harness Recs - pulling concern

Hello, would really love some recommendations for a harness to use work on training with a dog that pulls.

My Juliet (right) has been pulling on her harness and putting pressure on her neck and wheezing. This is honestly I newer issue. I never noticed an issue with her pulling- though the most recent change is I used to walk my standards together and now my husband will join, so we each walk one, and Juliet pulls if we lag behind.

Planning on doing individual walking work with her, but this harness seems to put pressure on her trachea so I want to get a proper one first. Maybe it is just bad fit? She has some loose skin on her neck as a result of a past rattlesnake bite, and I wonder if that’s why she specifically had that issue.

Any recommendations are super appreciated!

I feel like I have read so many different responses suggesting three point, front clip, easy walk, then others that say those are bad so I’m stuck on what to get. Thank you!

Standard Poodle Pup Advice!

Hi, just brought home a 3 month old standard poodle puppy. She’s a sweetheart. But she seems to have a lot of anxiety. I don’t think she was leash trained by the breeders at all. So it’s a work in progress. She has excessive pre-vomit drooling in car rides. It’s just day 2 since I’ve had her. She likes to sleep in bed with me. I think she’s just acclimating and getting comfortable in a new environment. Any advice?

Considering a poodle

I’m considering a standard poodle for our next dog. We currently have a Siberian husky and a dachshund, they are not great together but it is manageable with training and a close eye. My dachshund is elderly and slowing down a lot. We love how smart our husky is and love that she can keep up with us for long walks but she is very independent and aloof ideally we would like a more loving companion that can also cuddle. We were thinking about after my dachshund passes in a couple of years about adding a poodle to the pack.

Questions for you all that have a poodle?
Does your poodle have issues with addisons disease and if so how is managing that?
Do they have a strong prey drive if we decided to get one before my dachshund passes?
Are long walks, playing in the yard, obedience training enough exercise and mental stimulation or would you recommend more?
Is grooming at home with lots of learning realistic for a motivated owner? I feel good about managing my husky’s undercoat when she molts lol but am I going to be in over my head to think I can learn to groom my poodle?

What does a typical day look like for you and your poodle?
How does your poodle get along with other dogs?
What are your favorite haircuts?
What are your favorite manageable haircuts when life is busy or during your busier season like summer time?
Do you have a recommended breeder that has a very limited number of litters per year and genetically tests their dogs?

Potty Training

I recently welcomed a now 4 month old Apricot Spoo and he is finally getting settled and accustomed to our program. He’s been with us for 3 weeks. Week 1 he had an accident inside which was my fault 🤦🏾‍♀️. I take him out for breaks after water and meals, throughout the day and following naps and crate time. The last couple of days however he’s had 2 accidents and I’ve also caught him popping a squat… I immediately marked with no and took him outside.

I’m not sure why he isn’t signaling or holding it until we go out. Do I need to start training over aka treating upon every break again? What’s worst is I almost caught him trying to go on the couch which is a hell’s no lol.

Anyone thoughts, comments? I know it’s only been a few weeks but he came home “potty and crate trained” so I believe he understands the expectations of potty happens outside.

Thanks for your help! Pic in comment!

Lakeridge Standard Poodles breeders

Cathy Petri had fraudulently sold me a genetic defect standard Puppy with severe overbite for 3800.00 dollars. This defect will be detrimental to her future dental work. Cathy knowingly sold her to me with giardia, severe ear infection, and severe overbite. Knowing ….how many people would send puppies back flying from Seattle to Illinois from Illinois to Seattle? Who would in their conscious mind do this? It is terrible terrible people for doing this dishonor . I sat quiet believing her story about the puppy outgrowing the severe overbite, but with time her upper jaw continuously grows forward while the lower jaw stays stationary, getting more and more difficult for drinking water without having to dip her nose inside under the water. This has broken my heart to gazillion pieces. Stella is otherwise a beautiful spirited dog that knows she is well loved in my household. Please do not buy a puppy without physically meeting them in person in finding them to be of sound physical condition I don’t know how she got the Veterinarian to approve of Stella my standard poodle puppy be clear to fly with this in mind. Meanwhile, my Veterinarian strongly suggest this will be a difficult road for Stella with the severe over by without dental correction, which would cause her pain and suffering. Meanwhile, people are being convinced that this is a legit Breeder.

ISO ethical breeder near Wisconsin

I am more than willing to drive 5-6 hours away to get a poodle. I've been googling breeders, but they keep showing me doodle breeders as well. I'm also not sure what kind of health testing i should be looking for.

Please help me.

Hi everyone! So my 18 wk pup has been pulling lots on leash and he barks at everything he sees. He will not stop even if the person is extremely far right. So I hired a trainer and he came over yesterday and we went on a walk together. He basically told me I need to work on heel and that he needs to know that nothing is going to hurt him unless I let him know that lol. He told me he needed a different collar u know which one but should I just get a new trainer? He does choke himself on the leash and will not stop jumping & biting.
Should I continue training with flat collar?

3YO Male with Some Work Needed

My partner and I recently adopted a rehomed 3 year old male spoo who was raised around kids, knows some basic obedience (sit, shake, crate, etc.) due to family housing circumstances that led to them needing to get rid of him. Overall, he’s a very sweet boy. He’s gotten very close with our Italian greyhound and is eager to please (when he’s paying attention to you.)

I’m more than willing to say I didn’t fully know what I was getting myself into, as I’ve had dogs for years, am used to dealing with fearful dogs/winning trust/etc. However, he’s a whole different ball of wax.

His main issues that really put strain on our relationship with him are reactivity to our cat (she’s basically become an upstairs cat now, because every time he sees her he barks/jumps/tries to climb the walls to get upstairs), barking/barrier frustration if we happen to be outside without him or if anyone attempts to deliver anything to the porch, jumping and mouthiness (he is big and strong and jumps when he gets overstimulated), and a lack of focus when trying to redirect.

He loves to play fetch, loves to chew, and loves to run full-tilt. At the moment, I’ll admit, we don’t have the best yard setup to allow him to run free, but we take him almost every day of the week to a fenced area and let him lope around.

My partner and I have different approaches when it comes to training. He is very soft-spoken and mild, and will often begin petting/giving attention while trying to get our boy to obey a command, which results in our pup not listening immediately and doing whatever he wants. I have been able to be firm with him and get him to listen, followed by a reward, fairly consistently. The issue is just that when other dad gets home, we get hyper and excited and bark and jump and have a hard time listening because we’re getting the attention we want with no need to be calm. My partner has a hard time seeing the value in rewarding calm and not excitement and setting firm boundaries, but given his size and his mouthiness, it worries me to have him so ready to bowl someone over when they walk in the door. (That person could be a child, an older person, etc.)

As far as I’m concerned, the one thing I cannot seem to get pup to understand is 1) to be calm/not reactive when he sees the cat and 2) to settle with his barking in a timely fashion. He gets focused on one thing and has an extremely hard time winding down off of the adrenaline, will pace the length of the house panting, barking, etc.

Our vet agreed he would benefit from trying Prozac as it seems his socialization was a little wanting, and he is on week one of beginning it, so I’m willing to hazard we have yet to see the effects. (Is it true that many don’t see much improvement for 3-4 weeks in everyone’s experience?) All that said, this has become a huge pinch point in our relationship. I don’t want to rehome him again, I’m willing to work with him, but I fear for the safety of our cat and of people who aren’t two adult men if he gets overstimulated.

Does age help? Prozac? I know he needs more structured training, but I am about to graduate nursing school and my partner is getting his masters, so we’re both stretched somewhat thin. In the work that I’ve done with him when I can, he’s very smart and learns quickly when he has the ability to focus on me. Will it just take time? What have been your saving graces? I desperately don’t want to get rid of him, as my partner views him as largely his dog, and he adores him, but I am having such a hard time feeling like we’re failing him.

Struggling with 3 month old puppy

So I’ve had my standard poodle pup for about 4.5 weeks. He’s 13 weeks on Tuesday. I grew up with dogs, had a shi tzu and a lab as a kid but this is my first dog as an adult and the first one I’ve trained myself. I love him to death but I’m getting so frustrated with him. He is so bitey and land sharky that it is not enjoyable to spend time with him. I do short training sessions with him and if I’m not rewarding him fast enough or in between commands he jumps and nips at me. I give him puzzle toys and snuffle mats for mental stimulation but puzzles seem to hype him up more. He’s very hit or miss with snuffle mats. I’ve done lick mats and he’s calm while licking them but back to being a menace as soon as he is done. When he bites and nips I get up and walk away but as soon as he is calm and I’m back he’s back to biting. I’ve tried yipping like his littermates. That works on occasion but not every time. I do enforced naps. We met with a trainer last week and have our first session tomorrow. My hands and arms are covered in scratches from his teeth, and I’ve got bruises all over my legs from his nips. I’m at a loss and I am just exhausted and need some encouragement.

Sporty breeders

Hello everyone! I know there's a million breeder posts on here but I didn't see one specifically for sport dogs. I am looking to get a puppy next year and it's extremely important that I get a dog that wants to do sports. At the very least I really want a dog that can bike with me. I'd also love to do agility and maybe dock diving. So far I've found that crystal creek and piccolo poodles have advertised sporty dogs. I'm wondering if there are any other breeders who produce puppies worth sports in mind?

Standard poodle Crate Training

Hello everyone we just adopted a 10 month old standard poodle puppy! So far everything is going well except the crate training. She is ok in the crate but she occasionally barks. How should I go about this? Should I let her cry it out or should I sleep next to her the first few nights until she calms down? Thanks

Is it bad if my dog has a rectangular body instead of a square?

This is my first standard poodle and just recently learned about conformation. He is 13 months old and definitely has a longer body compared to his height. Does this mean he wasn’t bred correctly or ethically? His parents are supposedly health tested but aren’t dog shows. I just wanted a pet when I got him and didn’t know what to check for.

His temperament is amazing, super fast learner and confident and I couldn’t be happier with him. Just wondering if a more of rectangular body is normal? Thanks!
