Support with kennel in Poodle

Hi! I have a standard poodle and she is 9 weeks old. I have had her for one week! She is so smart and is already potty trained. She goes out the dog door on her own and initiates her own potty trips, she has only ever had one accident. At night, she hates the kennel and wants to sleep next to me. Eventually I won’t even use the kennel because I will let her sleep in the bed. Is it ok if I just eliminate the kennel at bed time?

Adopting Older Spoo

I have an opportunity to adopt a 6 year old spoo from a breeder who is downsizing. I was planning on getting a puppy from this breeder, but am not against an adult. I already have a 1.5 year old and am looking to get her a companion.

My question is, if this adult poodle is already bonded to her human after all of these years, how will going to a new family affect her? Will she even bond with me?

Why do my cheap clippers work so much better than Andis?

My Andis blades always go dull!

Today, I opened a brand new blade and sliced through HALF of my poodle's freshly washed, dried, and brushed hair. Halfway through the blade went from amazing to essentially unusable. This is not the first time I didn't get a complete clip before my blade went bad. I purchased it from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09XWF4HN9?ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details&th=1

Meanwhile, my $19 cordless clippers keep on cutting; they finished this grooming job and have done numerous clean and dirty clips in the past.

16 week old Poodle

He started peeing every time I pet him. I’m not coming in excited or anything. I’ve tried only petting him under his chin. He squats and pees. I’ve tried making him sit he just does it anyway. I’ve made sure to let him out beforehand and watch him go pee.

He was originally doing it for people at work and stuff, which I figured it would stop eventually but now I can’t even touch him or he pees. This started last week…

He’s had a bit of regression as far as testing boundaries like recall and peeing in the house again too, but this is different it’s just like happy pees.

What do I do/how do I stop it?

My 6y Male Poodle Killed a Rabbit

There’s been so many bunnies in our yard, eating the garden to the ground this year. There used to be one or two and my dog would chase them around, I’d laugh that he will never catch one. Now, there’s been 6 at a time sitting around when he’s not out and he actually caught one when I let him out. It escaped and went under our deck. I tried to get down there, even dug a bit just to see if it was okay and if I could help, absolutely no way to get down other than ripping apart deck.

Now I smell death. My sweet, gentle, overprotective poodle is a killer. I’m really worried and sad. Does he have the taste for blood now? What can I do to at this point to make sure he won’t kill again.

I’m so conflicted, my family bashed me for allowing him to kill a rabbit. I didn’t “allow” him. I just let him go in our backyard like I have for 5 years. The rabbits are out of control this year too. He just had better odds and I want to confess, secretly I’m proud of him. We do plan to move to a rural property in the next 8 months or so. Do we need to get him retrained? He’s never hurt anything before.

Lazy Dog or something else?

I decided to nose train my 5 month old Spoo by leaving treats around the house for him to find. Instead of literally finding one, he just looked near them and kind of looked for his toys instead. It’s a bit disheartening. I’m wondering if he needs his eyes checked too? I didn’t even hide him as I was putting them out. Or do yall think he might be lazy or something?

Situational Rules for Bed?

(TL;DR: anyone else have a “bed access is ok except at bedtime” rule that their dog does well with?)

This may be an odd question and I may be setting myself up here, but do Spoos typically do well with “situational” rules?

Specifically, my almost 5 month old female has not been allowed on our bed under any circumstance so far and she’s overall cool with it, even though the other two dogs (much smaller) are. Occasionally while playing with one of them, she’ll jump up in the bed with them and I just ask her to get down and she does, but she often stands next to the bed and looks “wistfully” at it/them/me. She’s a Velcro dog, unsurprisingly, so I do think she wonders why she’s excluded.

I have no problem with her being on the bed in general (and she’s allowed on all other furniture) but I don’t want her sleeping in the bed at night because it would just be too much with me + my fiancé and my little terrier (the other dog sleeps in an open crate by choice.) But if I let her on the bed during the day to nap or play with the other dogs or to hang out with me while I’m working, reading, etc. in bed, is it going to cause her confusion at night when she can’t be in the bed or am I going to end up having to kick her out a dozen times during the night because she thinks she can jump up here anytime?

FWIW, at nighttime, she’s currently perfectly content to just lie on her mat or in her bed on the floor and crash out.

Is it worth giving it a try or will even a one day test run cause an issue that takes weeks to fix?

Obviously not a huge deal that’s going to make or break anything about my/her life. Mostly just curious what others’ experiences have been.

Gingers Third Birthday extravaganza 🐩💩

My apricot spoo, who I have lovingly raised since puppyhood, just turned three today. For her birthday, she decided to fish a giant cat turd out of the litterbox, smear herself in it, then lead me on a five minute chase whilst smearing more of said turd all over the house. Post shower, she still has a turd-eating gleam in her eye. For all who say they magically mellow at three, I respectfully call shenanigans!

New to Spoos

Hello everyone!

I bit the bullet and applied for a spoo puppy after doing some research and asking around to see if the breed would fit our lifestyle, and the litter wont be until next year so I have some time to plan but!

Tell me about how spoos are as puppies! Ins outs bad good, how often should they be groomed? Ive heard a lot are picky, what age does this usually happen?

Im really excited for our puppy and im doing as much research as I can but I want first hand experience since no one around me has a poodle!

Thank you guys in advance!

My little case study 🩵

Fitz has been diagnosed with polymicrogyria (PMG), a genetic brain disorder. It is a rare disorder in standard poodles that can cause blindness, ataxia, seizures, cognitive impairment, and behavioral change. Fitz is blind, even though his eyes work properly - his brain cannot interpret the information he sees. He has very poor coordination and balance, and will stumble or fall often. When he runs he tends to ‘bunny hop’ and his movements are very exaggerated.

While he has not been diagnosed with seizures, he has episodes where he will have seemingly involuntary movements and ‘zone out.’ He has just turned eight months old, however his mental state is closer to three months; he has not learned or matured much past what a three month old puppy can manage.

We have been working with the canine genetics labs at both the University of Missouri and the University of Pennsylvania - they are both performing research on this disorder and hope to be able to create a DNA test for PMG. Dogs who are carriers are still perfectly healthy and can produce healthy litters as long as they are not bred to another carrier; a DNA test will be able to identify carrier dogs and help promote safer breeding practices.

If you have a standard poodle, especially white poodles, who are blind or showing neurological symptoms that are not explained by another diagnosis, please reach out to one or both of these universities. They have been so helpful with our diagnosis process and the work they are doing is so important.

Rescued Standard Poodles Available

The Humane society in Missoula, Montana has several standard poodles available for adoption. I believe they were rescued from a hoarding type situation. They are gorgeous pure bred standard poodles.

How often does your Spoo balk at a new bag of food?

Same brand, same exact type of food ... just a brand new bag and they decide they wont eat it.

Have seen this a number of times over the years with different brands of food. Best I can tell there are slight variations by batch and somehow the poo can tell and makes a big deal out of it.

What is your plan when this happens?

First class poodles

Looking into a Standard poodle breeder for 4 years in the future lol

Is First class poodles a good breeder?

https://www.firstclasspoodles.info

Green flags.

All digs seem to be 3k no matter colour or gender.
All dogs seem to be Akc registered and I think she registers the puppy’s.
She has Akc and Ukc champion and Grand champion breeding dogs.
All her breeding dogs seem to be fully health tested for what their breed needs.
All her dogs seem to be Embark and OFA tested.
I’ve done the math and it seems that no dog has been bred under 2 years.
Pups seem to be very socialized before going home(multiple haircuts, vets office lots of people)
They do temperament testing before sorting them into homes.

Red flags?

She has puppy’s that aren’t show able due to their colour however they are natural in their breed I can understand that not everyone wants to show I just don’t know if that’s ethical I’m new to this ok lol.
I think they stud to make Moyens and I think that’s from breeding a standard to a miniature however I could be wrong and idk if that’s ethical or not.
Seems they have 2-3 litters at a time and this is multiple times a year and idk how to feel about that, I’m pretty sure the breeder is a stay at home mom so maybe they just have enough time for that.

Bit about me (if you wanna recommend another breeder)

This will be my first personal dog.
I’m very thorough when it comes to animal care and welfare research and am very against back yard breeding.
I don’t plan on showing the dog however I’m not against it I would like to do other activities like dock diving or fly ball pretty much anything that would keep my dog happy.
I do think its possible that I will need a service dog in the future and I think a standard poodle would be a good fit for me,my family has a long line of heart conditions and I have asthma and pretty sure I have pots but I haven’t gotten that checked out.
I love how poodles come in so many different colours, my favorite is black or Brown Parti but I also love phantom.
I also am thinking about getting an American Akita and Australian shepherd, I actually have more experience with them but I think a poodle will suit my life style better.

Wanting an ADULT standard poodle (CO)

I have been looking at groups on other social media, watching the local rescues + shelter pages. I have 3 children which is a negative for a lot of the shelters here (I understand why) so our search has been a bit limited by that.

I really would like an adult poodle— The local breeders (co springs) don’t seem to have any retired dogs and just have puppies, I haven’t had any luck with owner rehome either. So, does anyone here maybe know of an ethical breeder or someone with an adult that might become available anytime soon?

Not able to potty train standard poodle

I got a standard poodle female at 10 weeks and have had her now for 5 weeks. I walk her twice a day for 20 min each and take her out in the backyard after she wakes up, after I take her out of the crate, and in general every hour.

When she goes potty outside I use a clicker and then give her a treat each time. She goes in the crate at night and after being out of the crate for over an hour. Despite doing all the above she still has an accident every other day inside the house. Sometimes she will play outside for a while and then pee as soon as she comes inside. How long will this take and why isn’t she accident free yet?

Spoo with...abdominal noises.

My 2 year old Spoo, Frank started having loud and unusual (for him) abdominal noises...like gas moving through his system. He pooped pretty well today, (5 times during the day) and while the last time was pretty soft, that's not really too unusual for him. (I added some Bernie's to his kibble to try to firm things up...he hasn't touched it)

None of the obvious signs of GDV, no restlessness or obvious discomfort, no attempting to vomit or unproductive pooping, just the stomach grumbling. No unusual foods today. (or none that we're aware of)

We live in the outskirts of BFE, the closest emergency vet is 2 hours away...IF they're accepting patients, which all too often, none are...they're swamped. The earliest I can get him into a vet will be Monday. I've given him one 20mg famotidine to try to calm his stomach. Not sure if it will help.

My worst fear happened.. GDV

My worst fear came true tonight.. my 2 year old standard Lavender was diagnosed with GDV 😭 If it wasn’t for this subreddit I would have never known the signs.. I’ve been so worried about it, even talked to my vet about preventative surgery. She talked me out of it and I wish I would have followed my gut and went for it. We spotted the signs right away, (started with whining, pacing and. General neediness. Took her out to go potty thinking she had to go.. while outside I noticed her belly was starting to look very full and felt tight, she started retching-nothing coming up)as soon as the retching started I knew. Got her to the emergency vet within about 90 minutes of first -and at the time unrecognized- symptoms. $12,000 (so far) later she is currently undergoing surgery. I could use all the good thoughts and prayers for her.. it was so hard leaving her there. Just waiting for a call from the vet, praying she makes it through 🙏🏼 Any tips for aftercare and/or what to expect afterwards is appreciated. ..trust your gut, get pet insurance (kicking myself because you always think it won’t be you 😵‍💫), and follow a Reddit page so you can be so paranoid that you recognize the signs! 🥴
