CVT Issues in 2020 CHR?

Hi, first post ever but I am looking at buying a 2020 Toyota C-HR XLE FWD CVT with 68k miles and the reason I steered away from some other cars was that I heard CVT transmissions have a high fail rate and are extremely expensive to fix. I was wondering if anyone who has one or knows more than I do knows if this car will last me years or fail before then. I cannot afford to fix a broken transmission in a year or two or a new car for that matter.

I haven’t purchased it yet but I have put a deposit to hold it for a week so please let me know before 7/10/26 please. I will go to another dealer if the CVT issue is really that big. Or any other big problems with this model and year of CHR.

Thank you!!!

2026 C-HR Owner’s Manuals

Just in case this helps some one else. I just purchased a new C-HR and the owner’s manuals were nowhere to be found. Dealer did not know either. 1st ‘26 C-HR the dealership had sold. Anyway, I just assumed everything is online now or read on the main screen. So I purchased a set online. Three weeks later, I find there is a removable shelf on the bottom of the center console. lifted the bottom shelf out and there they all were. pissah!

Driving tips for a 100km long descent

I have a question about a long downhill drive I’m planning. I’ll be passing through the longest mountain descent in my country, the Pozantı pass here in Turkey. My car is a 2026 1.8 Hybrid. My battery usually hits full capacity within the first 3 or 4 kilometers of a long descent, and I have about 100km of downhill road ahead. I really want to avoid overcharging or putting unnecessary stress on the hybrid battery. I’ve thought about using the "B" (Brake) mode, but I’m worried it might put too much strain on the 3-cylinder engine. I usually rely on Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) on highways, and it seems to manage everything quite well by balancing mechanical braking, regen, and engine braking automatically. For those of you who drive on long descents, what’s your preferred way to handle this? Do you think letting the ACC do the work is the best approach, or is there a better technique to keep the hybrid system healthy and efficient on such a long decline? I’d love to hear your experiences. Thanks!

26 Chr fog lights

Coming from a custom lighting background. It was only a matter of time before I started seeing what’s possible. 😬

A diode dynamics ssc1 fog light fits in the bumper plugs. Only thing now. Is making a mount for them. Oh and a replacement cover. But that’s later on.

Headlight Haze - Can it be fixed or do I have to replace?

2018 CHR. 275k miles. Trying to keep her looking fresh. Recently I’ve noticed the haziness on my headlights getting worse. Does anyone have any tricks or products that have helped this? Or did you end up replacing the whole assembly? (I’d prefer not as they aren’t cheap…) Thanks in advance!

2026 CHR Roof Racks

Hi Folks,

Been trying to get my hands on a roof rack for a 2026 CHR BEV.

Thule seems to have an option, but it doesn't account for the flush siderails on the roof.

https://www.thule.com/en-ca/roof-rack/car-roof-racks/thule-wingbar-edge-_-1035184?fitassistant_year_first=year%3A2026%7C2026%2Cmake%3AToyota%7CToyota%2Cmodel%3A%7B%22m%22%3A%22C-HR+5-dr+SUV%22%2C%22g%22%3A%5B134515168%5D%2C%22e%22%3A%5B%5D%7D%7CC-HR%25205-dr%2520SUV%2Cvariation%3Aroof-type-617956%7CNormal%2520roof%2520without%2520sunroof

Yakima, however, does account for the flush siderails (CFU). As a result, they are still "evaluating a fit."

I'd like to avoid the Toyota racks as they do have a slight curve which will be problematic once a heavy bike is loaded into a bike carrier on the roof.

Anyone have any solutions for this? Further, anyone have any ideas what kind of timeline Yakima typically works on to evaluate a fit?

Cheers

Possible source of dead 12-Volt for SubaruConnect users

This is an update to my original post here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SubaruUncharted/comments/1uczhvj/didnt_drive_for_4_days_and_needed_a_jumpstart/

Four days after the first time the car was found dead, it needed a second jumpstart.

Today the car was at the service center for diagnosis. Too soon to tell if this will solve the problem but the long story short is if you have the SubaruConnect App installed on your phone, disable Background App Refresh for SubaruConnect (on iPhone it's in Settings/General/Background App Refresh) and delete the companion App that's automatically installed on Apple Watch if you have one. Check your phone's battery usage to see if the Subaru App has been burning battery on background activity. Limit location services to only when the App is in use for good measure.

Here's the longer version. There's a Subaru service information bulletin revised 06/29/26 (yesterday) that has a list of Apps suspected of frequently requesting updates from the car, keeping it awake and draining the battery. One on the list is the wearable companion app that's installed alongside the SubaruConnect App on Google Wear OS and Apple WatchOS. The documentation implies these wearable apps contain a setting to constantly update the vehicle status - we could find no such setting in the Apple Watch app - my only guess is they may be simply referring to the background app refresh toggle. But, hearing this got me thinking about unwanted background activity.

So, I checked my wife's iPhone (where the SubaruConnect App is installed) and found that in battery usage, the app's background activity was off the charts; on Sunday it burned 17% of her iPhone's battery spending 15 hours and 45 minutes being active in the background - despite her not actively use the app at all. The surrounding days were also very high, measured in hours (a typical heavily used app might have a few minutes of background activity in a day and for comparison the KiaAccess app for our other car uses so little phone battery that it doesn't even register in the activity). Saturday - the day it needed jump-starting, was the second highest day. I'll attach a screenshot.

I don't understand the electrical side of anything but for those that do - the service center documentation confirmed a draw between 90-180mA on the battery before they proceeded to reset the infotainment system and remove our connected devices; afterward the found the draw to be 17ma steady.

Again, too soon to tell if this solves it - could wake up tomorrow and the car is dead again. But I can't imagine the SubaruConnect app talking for hours in the background doesn't have something to do with the dead 12-volt - at least in our case.

1 month with my new CHR

So it’s been a bit over a month and over 3000 miles since I purchased my 2026 Toyota CHR SE I must say I like this car more everyday. I came from a 2023 Tesla model 3 RWD and yeah I would never go back to Tesla there is no comparison in the quality between these two vehicles. I’ve already taken a road trip on it hence the amount of miles in a month and plug and charge worked effortlessly on all the Tesla superchargers and the cars actual highway range was close to what the car was estimating which was never the case on the Tesla. Only issue is I hope Toyota fixes the Apple Maps EV routing thru CarPlay but other than I love this car!

Why EV over a PHEV?

Hello,

I am considering my next vehicle as I’m coming from a 06 Toyota Highlander. I work from home, so I don’t have a crazy daily commute I was considering an EV (such as the CHR) but then I was considering an PHEV RAV4 which is a bit like best of both worlds it seems.

For those of you with the new CHR, why EV over a PHEV? Curious to hear feedback on what pushed you one direction over the other.

Can y’all tell what year/model this is?

I hired one to drive through Ireland a few years ago and it was great! but I’ve lost the paperwork to check the specifics. I’ve gotten as far as knowing it’s between 2020 and 2022

Re-joined the C-HR Club Today!

I leased a C-HR in 2018 and fell in love!! When my lease was up 3 years later, the dealership couldn’t work a deal that I could afford, so I walked away 😢

But today, I got to pick up my brand new C-HR, and I seriously couldn’t be happier!!!

Accidentally activated EPB with rear caliper off on 2021 Toyota C-HR. Piston came out. Is the caliper salvageable?

I’m looking for some advice because I think I made a pretty big mistake.
I have basically no mechanic experience and was replacing the rear brake pads on my 2021 Toyota C-HR. I removed the passenger rear caliper but left the electronic parking brake (EPB) connector plugged in. The caliper was completely off the rotor, although it was supported and not hanging by the brake hose.
While working, I accidentally pressed the EPB button. The piston extended outward, and shortly afterward the dash displayed “EPB Malfunction” followed by “EPB Unavailable.”
I tried to push the piston back in, but it ended up coming completely out of the caliper. Several ounces of brake fluid leaked out, and I reinstalled the piston by hand. The brake fluid reservoir under the hood never ran empty and still has plenty of fluid. I haven’t pressed the brake pedal since because I’m worried the piston will come back out.
At this point I’m trying to figure out the correct way to recover from this. Is this caliper likely ruined, or can it be rebuilt and reused? Should I just replace the passenger rear caliper? Will I only need to bleed that rear brake, or should I bleed the entire brake system? Also, what is the proper procedure for getting the EPB working again after something like this? Can a Toyota-compatible scan tool reset it, or is there more involved?
I’ve attached a photo of the caliper in its current state. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some good news about the 12v issue

Alright, y'all. So, I've been testing this theory about the AT&T 4G causing the battery drain for a week.

Just to give you guys a background, I got the vehicle two weeks ago. I only drove it for a full day on Sunday. The car was parked in the garage for 5 days. I tried to leave the house on Saturday morning but failed due to the battery drain. I panicked like most of y'all. Luckily, I have a NOCO jump starter handy and was able to start it right away.

So, I've gone into this sub and many other subs to try and find an answer. I stumbled upon one comment by one user that said he fixed it by turning off the 4G trial. I thought to myself, "hmm that seems silly but it may make sense because AT&T coverage may be terrible in my area." FYI, I use T-Mo and the coverage is amazing here. I called up AT&T the next morning and had it turned off. I left other DCM services enabled.

Just to make sure that I set the test correctly, I followed exactly how I left the vehicle the week prior. I did not move the car from the garage for 5 full days. I did, however, unlock the doors a couple times to see if the lights would turn on and the doors unlocked. In theory, this should also drain some more power. No issues with all of that. I haven't charged the car since Sunday either; it was left to 81% charged.

And here's the good news: I went to start the car this morning and it started! 🥳

With that said, this may work for me and a few others out there, but may not fix it for everyone. I think we still need to demand Toyota/Subaru to replace our 12v with an AGM or LiFePO4 version ASAP until they resolve the issue permanently.

Just wanted to get some advice im looking to buy a 2021 chr koba the one im specifically looking at has 160,000km on it for around 24k(AUSTRALIA DOLLAR) and it has a 3 year warranty on it.

Chr accident

Hi all..
My partner had an accident in my 2017 Koba AWD.
It was wet roads, he hit a b double truck.
He hit the back right side of the trucks trailer with the front left side of my CHR.
Pulled up at a set of lights…
He was turning right behind the truck.
He has said that he was only driving 10-15kms and the cars anti collision breaks engaged, the car locked up and slid 10m into the truck.
Something isn’t sitting right with me, it’s not that I don’t believe him but I have driven this car for over 2yrs and not once has it “spun out of control” even when the anti collision engages.
I haven’t questioned him, I have only tried to understand what happened and he gets very defensive…has this happened to anyone..
he didnt get any details of the truck as it drove off and my car turned off apparently so he wasn’t able to follow it, only honk the horn and the truck didn’t stop.
At a wits end as my comprehensive insurance I pay $380 a month for will not progress with the claim without the the trucks details.
PLEASE HELP WITHOUT JUDGEMENT.

Toyota Auris 1.8 hibrid 2018

Hello!

I want to buy a Toyota Auris hibrid with 200 k km.

I heard Toyota is bulletproof.

But, should I expect something to go wrong in the next 10 years?

Some expensive parts?

The alternative is a Suzuki Vitara 1.6 petrol natural aspirated.

Thank you!
