Pro Tips - Apps Apps Apps

You are more comfortable with figuring out how you charge your Toyota bZ now. It’s now time to jump down the rabbit hole that is apps. I’m going to split up my post into two sections: charging network apps and complimentary apps.

Charging network apps
Probably the biggest flaw with electric vehicles is charging apps. Most charging network out there have their own app and sadly very few have interoperability with other networks. This means you may have to have a folder of charging apps on your phone for all the different networks you may encounter. Learning which charging networks are most common in your area will help guide your decisions on which ones to set up.

The Toyota bZ does come with PnC (Plug and Charge). You can configure this in your Toyota app to facilitate charging by just plugging in your car to the charger, however I recommend you downloading the respective charging network app as a back up.

Also to note some of these charger have credit card or RFID terminal. EVGo and ChargePoint, for example, offer RFID cards you can associate with your account. This is helpful when charging in remote locations with poor cellular connectivity. I find the credit card terminals frequently fail.

Complimentary Apps
Make sure to download the Toyota App before picking up your car. After that, the next two apps that come to mind are ABRP and PlugShare.

ABRP (A better route planner) is one of the best and first navigation app that takes into account your cars charging needs in planning your route. You can get personalized route considerations based on make/model of your car. You can adjust variables that reflect your driving style/efficiency. Further, if you purchase a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) OBD dongle it can give realtime data to ABRP to further tailor your experience. More information about OBD dongles and security best practice.

PlugShare is a great app for looking for charging station and their reliability. People will check in and give first hand reports on their experience. It’s useful in planning where to charge. Toyota, ABRP, and other apps don’t have the reliability scoring. You can enter your vehicle info in which will help it filter charging stations for your needs. It is also a crowd sourced database, so don’t forget to check in and report your experiences.

What are some of your favorite apps for your Toyota bZ?

Looking to trade in my 2019 Camry for the XLE Plus - Got questions

I’ll admit that BZ brought the idea of buying electric again since it’s competitive and seems to be good overall value, and really appreciate this community for sharing your experiences!

- Main concern is the dashboard visibility. Do you or your family members have gripes about the wheel getting in the way?

- Advertised vs. actual mileage out of a full charge. How big is the variance in a mild southeast cold? high heat

- What did you pay for trade-in/purchase out the door? Any wait times like with other Toyota models?

- Any hassle charging at Tesla stations during road trips?

- Any other quirks, gripes, or issues you wish you knew about before getting the car?

How to ensure there are no 12v battery issues when picking up a 2026 bz

I am scheduled to go purchase a used 2026 bz tomorrow. It is located 90 miles from my home, so it is not local. It's been sitting at the dealership for a few months (was almost immediately turned back in after it was sold new).

I am planning to call the dealer today to ask that they do whatever is necessary to ensure I am not dealing w/ a dead 12v tomorrow when I try to drive it home. However, as someone who knows next to nothing about cars, not sure what I need to request. So, a few questions:

  1. If I show up tomorrow and there's a 12v issue, would that present itself at the dealership, or is it possible everything would seem fine, I could drive away, then encounter the issue on the drive home?

  2. Should I ask that they drive the car today (would that help ensure there is no issue)?

  3. If there is a problem, is a jump to the car the fix, or is it more complicated because it's an electric car?

Any guidance or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Flat tire/ replacement options

We’ve only had our 2026 BZ for a few weeks and got a flat tire this morning, we opted to tow it vs using the emergency tire repair as we’ve read about it messing with the sensor and costing more to replace.
We have a used tire on currently from a 24 hour tire shop who didn’t seem to know about LRR tires, any suggestions on the type of tire we should purchase or if going through Toyota is suggested? Never imagined missing the spare tire option until we didn’t have it, not even a jack to assess the damage to the tire.

Blackout Badges

I’m like the look of the black badges but wonder if they can trap water under them and promote rust. Thoughts. I keep my cars a long time.

Why no charging receipts?

I've been testing Tesla chargers with my now properly setup Plug and Charge (PnC), but why is there no proper charge receipts when using the Toyota App or just PnC?

A few days ago, I used the Tesla App and I received a PDF of the transaction from Tesla.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get receipts from transactions?

Thank you.

Best jump starter to keep in trunk for the 12V battery?

My BZ was dead this evening and it was the 12V battery. Month old car. Heading to dealer tomorrow.

Regardless of what the problem is/was, I now really want a jump start battery pack for my trunk. I do not want to be stuck somewhere remote without the capacity to get my car running again.

What brands/models do folks here like best? And sorry if you’ve had this experience, too.

Toyota Bz Fwd issues

Got a Toyota BZ Xle FWD last week. At 100% charge It showed 378kms, after driving 200kms at 110kmh, I have 13% left with no climate on and 8C temperature. How does that even make sense? 20-24kwh/100km is what it shows

Not really impressed can't even go 250 kms without having to stop with no climate on

Here is my L2 charging setup works like a charm shared with my dryer

I called bunch electricians to have a dedicated 240V outlet installed from my main electrical box in my garage (you can see it in the video) to 3 ft away to the wall, I had bids from 4 different electricians anywhere from $700 to $2000 - IMO: as soon as they hear garage and EV price goes up!. I put together this setup under $225, works perfect, very happy with it!

Pro Tips - Adapters

So you just got your bZ, opened the trunk, and found two little adapters. You’re thinking “do I actually need these?”

Yes. Keep them. Here’s why.
Quick background on why there are TWO
Your bZ has a NACS port (the Tesla-style plug, technically called the SAE J3400 standard). The beauty of NACS is that it handles everything (Level 1, Level 2 AC charging, and Level 3 DCFC) all through one port.

The old standards weren’t built that way.
J-1772 was designed for AC charging only (Level 1/2). CCS (Combined Charging System) added a second set of pins below the J-1772 connector specifically to handle DC fast charging. Different pins, different physical connector, different adapter needed. (There is also a CHAmeDO port out there mostly for the Nissan Leaf, don’t worry about that one)

That’s why you have two. One for J-1772 AC stations, one for CCS DC fast chargers. They do different things.

“But isn’t everything going NACS now?”
Mostly, yes, new installs are trending that way. But there are tens of thousands of J-1772 and CCS stations already in the ground across the country. Parking garages, hotels, workplaces, older public networks.

Those aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Lose your adapters and you’ve just cut yourself off from a huge chunk of the charging network. These aren’t $5 replacements either.

TL;DR
•NACS = one port, handles AC & DC ✅
•J-1772 and CCS = different pin configurations = two separate adapters
•Legacy stations aren’t disappearing, hold onto both

Max range 2026 bZ XLE fwd?

I'm trying to see the maximum driving range anyone has observed from a 2026 bZ XLE fwd in highway conditions:

Highway driving (average speed 110kmh)

Outdoor temp ideal

No HVAC use

No adverse wind conditions

Can anyone with experience in such conditions provide some real world examples of their maximum achieved range or efficiency?

Thank you

Got the first chip/dentat 2500 miles

Guess she’s totaled! /s

Jokes aside, this has been the BEST car to drive for long trips. Seats feel comfy, range is great, and EVGo has $20-$25 of free DCFC promo codes!

Eventually if it’s bugs me enough and the panel isn’t too expensive, I’ll swap it out. Don’t think there’s parts for this car readily available anyway. Unless someone can find it :)

Proactive Driving Assist

Have it on our 26 bZ. It’s a pretty cool feature that I use every once in a while. I just wish there was a dedicated button on the steering wheel for it (like the lane assist button) so I don’t have to go to the touchscreen while driving.

Which One, 2026 bZ Limited vs Model Y Standard?

Been deep in the EV rabbit hole and I'm seriously considering the 2026 bZ Limited over the Model Y Standard. The AWD, heated seats/wheel as standard, CarPlay, 360 camera, and the $7,500 tax credit potentially tanking the price are all swinging me Toyota's way. Oh and not to mention 4.9 seconds 0-60 on a Toyota SUV. But I want real-world takes, not spec sheets. Few things I'm curious about:

Do you enjoy driving it? Anything you miss about Tesla?

How does the 0-60 actually feel day to day, snappy or deceptive like some EVs?

How's charging been in practice with NACS? Seamless or janky vs the native Tesla experience?

Any gripes with the infotainment or that gauge cluster blocking issue?

Mostly a city/suburb driver, one road trip a month max, so 278 miles of range is fine for me. Just want to know what it actually feels like to own one before I fully commit to it.

Is the insurance higher for XLE AWD than XLE FWD Plus? Or do they clump all BZ together when determining insurance?

My 2023 got rear end last night and I am hopeful that it will be determined total so I could purchase a 2026 BZ XLE AWD.

Tow Hitch

Anyone put a tow hitch on their bZ? The dealership I got mine from was not familiar with installing them for this model and curious if anyone has had any insight or successes?

Thoughts after my first EV road trip

Just finished a 900 mile road trip in my 2026 bZ XLE plus. I heard EV road trips suck, so I wanted to see how bad it actually was. This was round trip from the SF Bay Area to Anaheim.

  • The hotel stop on the way down had free overnight L2 charging! However, I forgot to turn off the charging schedule so it only got me up to 67%, rather than 100. No big deal, just one more DC fast charger stop.
  • ABRP is essential for planning routes. Just set your destination and SoC and it will figure it out. However, it assumes you're speedrunning travel and you don't run into any issues finding a stall, with the various apps, or getting charging to start. I'd pick the "fewer stops" preset rather than "optimal".
  • I was using Google Maps through Android Auto navigate to the next charger. It thought every Tesla Supercharger was incompatible despite me telling it I had a nacs plug, and would warn every time I plugged in the destination.
  • When you search for the next charger, search for "supercharger [city name]" otherwise you may waste time looking for a useless Tesla "Destination Charger" that will be impossible to spot and of no use.
  • Plug n Charge through the Toyota app worked fine... ...3 out of 4 times. Luckily I had the Tesla app set up as backup.
  • You have to turn off the car to get charging to start. I hope this is not a hardware issue and can be fixed with a software update.
  • Turning the car back on to have the AC running while charging is nice. No, I don't care that it will take 2% of the incoming power to run the compressor.
  • Tesla Superchargers are ubiquitous along highways in CA. I was hoping to get to use Rivian or IONNA chargers where you can just tap a card, but it ended up being all Tesla fast charging.
  • Superchargers are always in random parking lots far away from anything so you have to go somewhere else to pee. Sometimes hard to find. Can't wait until every current gas station has a couple fast chargers, or fast chargers have tall sign posts advertising their location and $/kWh.
  • An older gentleman came up to me at a Tesla Supercharger asking me if it was possible to charge without using an app because an elderly could trying to charge their new Cadillac had asked him the same thing. It is not.
  • ABRP assumes you're just going to charge enough to get to the next DC charger, but traveling with a toddler who wanted to run around or eat, and need a diaper change, made charging stops take longer. No big deal, just replan the route from your current position and actual SoC.
  • I didn't mind the longer stops vs. filling up a with gas. Good to break up driving. Partner did not. It definitely turns 7 hours of driving into 9+ hours on the road.
  • The bZ is my first car with adaptive cruise control. It works all the way down to 0 mph! It also will brake as aggressively as it needs to. Made driving though LA traffic much less stressful and tiring since you don't have to constantly work the pedals.
  • LANE TRACING ASSIST UNAVAILABLE SOON TAKE CONTROL OF WHEEL
  • I only charged during daylight hours. California has tons of excess solar during the day. This was a solar powered road trip!
  • I use L1 charging at home. The fastest DC charging speed I saw was 141 kW. It was cool to charge over a hundred times faster than usual.
  • The typical charging speeds I saw were 90-100 kW between 30-80% charge.
  • I spent about $110 on fast charging. The equivalent gas on my old car would have been about $180 at today's prices, $120 a year ago. DC fast charging does not save significant amounts of "fuel" money. Only home charging does.
  • I averaged 3.7 miles/kWh for the trip, but I was not trying to optimize and had the AC blasting in the heat. The best stretch was heading into LA with bad traffic: 4.4 mi/kWh. The worst stretch was I-5 going 80mph into a headwind in 95 degree heat: 2.8 mi/kWh.
  • My napkin math says it requires ~1% of the battery to climb 1000 feet. The reverse is also true. It was cool to see the SoC percentage tick upwards when coasting down the grapevine.
  • The EPA estimate of 315 miles really is ideal conditions. My estimate at 100% is now 240 miles.
  • The car was very comfortable. Can't believe I drove 7 hours in one day without being too tired afterwards.
  • Decent cargo space, it held all our luggage, a stroller, car seat and all the extra crap you need to bring with a toddler. There was a little bit of stress that it wasn't all going to fit, but I made it work.

All in all the EV road trip wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be.

Would I do it again? Not for the foreseeable future. Travelling with a toddler was the worst thing! Any EV annoyances pale in comparison.
