Aximote update: looking for Volvo beta testers

Hey everyone,

some of you might already know Aximote from our previous posts here. Over the past months, we received a lot of helpful feedback from you and we are now preparing a bigger update.

The main addition will be new driving efficiency scores, giving you more feedback on how you drive and where you can improve.

We are also working on better cost tracking, more analysis options, and more customization so you can decide which data and insights matter most to you.

We are now looking for a few early beta testers from the Volvo community who want to try the new version and give us feedback before the public release.

If you want to have access join the whatsapp or discord channels i linked in the comments.

As always, feedback from real Volvo drivers helps us a lot. Thanks again to everyone here who already helped us improve the app.

Fob Battery Keeps Dying

I have a 2024 XC60 PHEV - bought it used in December 2025. Since that time, I have had to replace the fob battery 4 times in a year and 1/2. Have others experienced this? I think with my old 2014 Ford, I replaced the battery 4 times in 10 years. Maybe a defective fob?

How do the Volvo PHEV ICE behave in sudden acceleration? XC60 Tx

I was wondering if there is any SPECIAL technology that protects the Volvo PHEV ICE when the engine wakes up during sudden acceleration and pushes the car to 3-4kK RPM with turbo boost. If I am not mistaken the car has a mechanical oil pump with nothing extra.

The idea that a "Cold" ICE wakes up and it is asked to Rev up to 3-4K RPM in 2-3 seconds under boost gives me shivers and makes me wonder how much worst this is versus starting the car and letting it idle until it warms up.

I understand that there could be ECM failsafes that prohibit the car from revving above specific RPM or the Boost pressure is limited until the engine warms up but I am also wondering how much wear happens when the engine wakes up and takes 2-3 seconds to lubricate the internals.

To buy or not to buy?!

We are looking to purchase our first EV to replace my 2013 Subaru Impreza hatchback. My parameters have been around 25K, AWD, space for a dog in the trunk, and Apple Carplay. Which includes basically every sub compact EV. After driving 7 different cars I deflinitely like the XC40 Recharge best! I am completely overwhelmed by the tech forward vehicles with massive screens. Plus, she's so cute!

Today we drove a 2023 XC40 Recharge Plus with 41,403 miles. It does have the 360 cameras and a sun roof. New tires about 10,000 miles ago. It's listed for just under 25K. Planning on going back tomorrow to see how it fits the carseat.

Please tell me the good, the bad, the ugly of your owning experience! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I think my husband in particular is more on the fence about an EV. I however am ready to take the leap!

2022.5 S60 T8 Inscription vs 2023 S60 T8 Plus

Hi everyone! I recently posted about a 2019 S60 T8 Polestar that I was considering buying and got a lot of helpful feedback recommending the 2022.5+ Extended Range cars instead.

I’ve narrowed my search down to a 2022.5 S60 T8 Extended Range Inscription and a 2023 S60 T8 Plus. They’re priced pretty similarly, but I prefer the features and interior of the 2022.5.

What I’m having trouble figuring out is exactly what changed between 2022.5 and 2023. From what I can tell, the 2022.5 Extended Range is kind of a sweet spot: it gets the updated drivetrain and larger battery but still has the earlier styling and option packages.

The VIN / window sticker confirms that the 2022.5 I’m looking at is an Extended Range car.

Is there a definitive breakdown of the differences between the 2022.5 Extended Range cars and the 2023 models? Is there anything that would make the 2023 worth choosing over a well-optioned 2022.5?

Has the backup view always looked like this?

I don’t remember it showing the inside of the rear opening. It’s closed. I thought the cameras were all outside.

ERAD fluid after 60k km

This is the fluid removed from my T8 ERAD 3 after 60k KMs

I'll try 30k interval next time and see what it looks like before deciding on final service interval which I suspect will land at 45k. It's probably the hardest working fluid in the car and Volvos sealed for life approach doesn't stack up IMO

Not expensive to have it replaced, even at a dealer. $90AUD for fluid and half hour labour, also $90

‘23 XC90 T8 Transmission “Clunk”

This last week has involved a lot of driving - far more than I usually do. Maybe 1000 total, mostly highway but some mountain roads. Anyway, during the course of this driving there were two disturbing noises; the first was a strange whir after having driven over some fresh asphalt. That went away after maybe 10 miles but I have never really heard anything like that noise before. Second was during some highway travel that involved a lot of slow traffic. During that period there was one fairly loud “clunk” from the rear of the vehicle. No other noises later and everything seemed alright. But it got me worried a bit since I’ve heard about problems with the ERAD. Is this something that I can have the dealer check out? The car is CPO for less than a year with about 34k miles on it. I’d like to get it checked before anything major happens but I don’t even know what to ask them to check. Thoughts?

Do you D or B?

I find myself in B mode most of the time- even in highway. From what I can tell the regen is minimal but I like that one pedal driving.

What do you prefer? D or B?

Battery Failure on 2021 S60 T8, without a car for weeks, no help from dealer or Volvo

Our beloved S60 suffered a battery failure and then entered limp mode and stopped accelerating quickly. Towed it to the only dealer in the state. It's part of a recall, but the part is back ordered, they say 2 months at the earliest. Dealer won't do a loaner, I didn't buy it there, they suggested I call Volvo USA. Which I did, and they thought about it for a day, and then decided that my case didn't need a rental car. How does that logic work? It's literally telling to me pull over and it's part of a recall.

Anyone have any luck on getting Volvo to not leave you without transportation for months? We'll rent a car either way, I just don't think that should be on us given the circumstances.

This is likely my last volvo purchase.

UPDATE: I sent a strongly worded email to volvo suggesting that I might qualify for breach of warranty under Lemon Laws because it would be undrivable for more than 30 days. Suddenly today the local dealer calls to tell me that I can pick up a loaner today to keep until my car is done including backorder. Crisis averted, but still really shitty behavior on Volvo's part.

The grass isn’t always greener

Been renting a Peugeot 2008 for the last week and I just thought I’d share with you how lucky I think we should feel as compared to those who bought a Peugeot.

Responsiveness. You think our AAOS is bad? Drive a Peugeot. It’s pathetically bad.

Cameras. After a week, I still can’t figure out how to activate them other than when going in reverse. Cameras are vital for parking in France as people park absurdly close to each other. With our Volvo. One button access.

Cruise control. The team at Stellantis who designed this should not be fired. They should be put before a firing squad. Can’t resume speed. Setting the speed may get you there. It may get you over. Bonne chance

This is not about how a Peugeot drives vs a Volvo. One is premium. The other is Stellantis. This is about how they leverage software.

I will absolutely never buy a Stellantis vehicle. Pure garbage.

Hybrid mode on T6 & T8

What is the point of Hybrid mode?

To my understanding, Hybrid mode is just Pure mode with one useful feature- smart energy distribution- if Google Maps has a set waypoint.

And worth mentioning, if the car doesn’t have internet connection, smart energy distribution doesn’t work…

Shouldn’t Hybrid mode just work based on speed and acceleration? if driving over x km/h, engine takes over.

Am I missing something?
Thanks!

A/C knock

Hi community I wanted to check in. I bought a CPO MY24 T8 in January. Once the weather started to heat up in March, I noticed I could hear a knock and feel it in the pedals. I narrowed it down to this happening only when the AC was running. I took it in right away the first time and the noise could not be replicated so nothing happened. But as the summer has continued, the knock is more present and it’s currently in the shop. The dealership is saying, Volvo asked them to put in a spacer, however, even with a spacer in place, it’s still knocking. They’re saying this is a normal characteristic, but the loaners that I’ve driven and other cars that I’ve driven don’t make the same knock. Any thoughts? Is this happening to anyone else?

200 trips in my XC60: here's what I wanted to know, and what the Aximote API let me answer

I had three questions after three months with my XC60 T8 PHEV.

First: is motorway driving actually cheaper than city driving?
That's where I started, and on electric power alone the answer surprised me: 21.5 kWh/100km on motorways vs 22.8 kWh/100km in town.
The steady highway run, the one that feels thirsty in a petrol car, is the more efficient one when the battery is involved.
But that's only half the answer, because a PHEV has two energy sources. The real number changes dramatically once petrol enters the equation. Which is where the second question took me.

Second: what's this actually costing me (both fuel types)?
A PHEV has two energy sources, and they're not equal.
On pure electric at home rates (€0.34/kWh, actual Dutch contract), a trip runs about €0.07–0.08/km.
But the moment the petrol engine kicks in, the same distance costs ~€0.50/km.
That's roughly 6× more.

The API gives you trip-level consumption for both electricity and petrol.

So, I wired it to real prices: my actual €/kWh from home charging, my actual €/L from pump receipts, split per trip, divided by distance.
No averages, no estimates.
The €/km number doesn't tell the whole story until you see the fuel mix behind it & that's where the car tells you what you're really spending.

Third: can I predict the next trip before I start?
Built a forecasting model on the trip history. This was the most fun one.
It guesses my consumption before I leave the driveway.

Is it always right? No.
Is it right enough to be useful? Yes

and it will keep getting better. with each trip made.

This is just the surface of the rabbithole, LOL. Then i had more questions.

Along the way my curiosity pulled me further:

  • What road types am I driving on?
  • Can the car learn my route families without me labelling anything?
  • What's the efficiency difference on a road-by-road level?

A weekend project, then another, then another.

The GPX export gives speed and bearing at every trackpoint. Which turns out to be enough to start measuring how smooth a drive really is. That's a later build or maybe the dev-gods can make my life easy by adding G-force data to the GPX export someday. wink Hint hint.

I should also attribute the 2 specific git repos that help me build this:
google-research/timesfm
google-research/tabfm

They really helped fill the gaps. I am not a developer, just someone with a hermes agent, time and curiosity.

If I can wire this together, anyone with curiosity and an API key can.

All of this runs on the Aximote API. I pay for the Pro licence, and honestly, it's worth every cent.

The endpoints carry more detail than the official app shows now(it could show more, you never know), and the team has been responsive whenever I've hit a question. Just good data and the right questions.

So here is me peeping out of my rabbithole, asking:
What questions did your car make you ask?
Anyone else pulling Aximote data into their own stack, and what did you find?

Charge while on a long drive, or let it ride?

When you take a 200 mile drive, do you turn the car to “Charge” mode after the battery is empty, or do you let it ride?

Has anyone tested to see which method gets better long term milage?

Which T8 should I buy? (Advice needed)

Hi everyone! As a former S60R owner (spaceball, of course) and a current Saab Viggen owner, I am ready for my next quirky Swedish car. I am looking to purchase a T8 Volvo of some kind and am debating between a few options.

I found a 2019 S60 T8 Polestar with 42k miles, which I love, but it's the first Iteration of this complex twincharged hybrid system, so I am concerned about long-term maintenance costs and reliability.

For the same price, I could get a 2022.5 S60 T8 Extended Range with similar or lower miles.

Is it worth taking the risk for the Polestar, or is it a better decision to go for the newer non-polestar?

I am also considering the XC60 T8 variant since there's quite a lot more available and my wife prefers the XC60 to the S60.

This will be a daily driver I intend to keep for many years, so my goal is to get the most value for my money. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Pilot Assist

I’m considering adding the Pilot Assist upgrade to my 23 C40 recharge. It’s $599 in the app. Does Volvo ever run a sale on this either online or through the dealer? I know I’ve seen posts about 1-2 years ago and the price has gone up. I don’t want to miss this price on a price increase, but I also don’t want to buy now if there are sales!
