Women who golf - what do you actually want from golf clothes?

Women who golf - what do you actually want from golf clothes?

Hi! I’m a woman who loves golf and lately I’ve been thinking a lot about women’s golf clothes. I feel like it's pretty rough as a woman trying to find nice golf clothes that are not too expensive, practical and aesthetic. or it might just be me so I figured the best way to understand it was to actually ask women who golf rather than make assumptions.

I made a really short anonymous survey and would genuinely appreciate any responses. It'll only take up 2 minutes of your time

Also very happy to hear any thoughts in the comments

Golfing around guys on the course is crazy.

Golfing with men can be awkward. I like all sorts of golf clothes and try not to be “sexy.” Gosh, just a normal skirt or pants and stared at all the time. Are guy golfers just horn dogs? 🤔

Question about which tees to use

I’m an intermediate player, no official handicap but generally I’m happy if I score in the mid 90s. I was taught in HS that women play the forward tees always, but recently googled it and learned that stance has changed over the years. Recently I was playing with 2 guys, strangers who were below my skill level. Of course they were playing from the middle tees so I felt a little weird about playing the forward tees when I was already playing better/out driving them. Am I overthinking it? Should I just keep playing the reds? When would it be appropriate to move back? I’m not consistently on the green in regulation, im certainly not regularly hitting below par. just curious if anyone else ever moves back a tee to protect the fragile masculinity of their group? (Jk IRL, the two players in question were totally cool)

Edited to add. On a good day I will drive 200 or maybe 220 on my best shot. However my husband works for pebble beach so the courses we usually play are HARD. Situation above was at spyglass.

A good day

I’ve played off and on with the girls and in friends scrambles for 20-years but never really any good. I’ve never played a focused 18 on my own without mulligans or giving up on holes.

I started lessons and true practicing a few years ago but still off and on. My husband has always encouraged me to swing more at the range and simulator. The last six months I finally listened and have swung more than in years.

I’m 55. I love competition, know a lot about the game (and sports in general as I’m passionate about them), but wasn’t blessed with athletic ability. I’m 5’0 and fluffy. Hustle and heart all day but I’m the try hard girl.

I played my first round of 18 today on a course I’ve never played. Finished 113 with NO mulligans and completed every hole. To complete every hole with only one double par (stupid sand) was a huge accomplishment in my book. My hubby and I played with two strangers (very nice young guys) which added nerves in the beginning. I’m 9-holes away from finally registering a handicap on GHIN. (All my other scores were executive courses).

I feel AWESOME about the day. I miss hit a handful of drives which made for triple bogeys that may have resulted in some adult language. I refused breakfast balls or redos. Not that those are a bad thing but I really want to set a realistic handicap and wanted to know a true 18 hole score.

I share this in hopes that those who aren’t sure this is the game for them keep playing. Don’t be afraid of playing with strangers. I received a lot of encouragement and felt pure joy when I heard “great shot!”

I almost gave up playing this game a few years ago and I’m so thankful I doubled down on learning. Keep swinging ladies. Fun times ahead!

Is it cheating to carry more than 14 clubs as a recreational golfer?

Would you call out a playing partner for doing so? I think we all compete even at a recreational level.

Tall Golf Apparel for women?

I've begun golfing and while I'm only 5'9" I'm struggling with a few things. For clubs I had to get men's clubs as the ladies are not for my height, which is fine for me but probably pretty hurtful for the short kings out there. Maybe the sport could accept that while our sex influences our height our height does not define our sex? But more relevantly, I am struggling to find comfortable clothes to golf in that are not "ankle length" which equates to straight up high-waters on my 33" inseam. Compound that with the shirts being short with no boob room and I'm really feeling like it's 1989 again. I've been wearing my regular workout clothes but once I go out on the course I'd like to make sure I'm dressed respectfully and have the right vibe.

Struggling to find the right glove for longer fingers/large hands help!

My hands are on the larger side for a woman, however the majority of it is just that I have long slender fingers. Currently I have women’s large Callaway gloves, they are just a smudge small for the full length of my hand, however it’s really that the fingers themselves are too short. It ends of with the webbing being loose and not being able to fully have my hand comfortably in them. I have worn men’s Kirkland gloves which are good in length but have an extra half inch width on each finger.

The issue I am running in to overall in my glove hunt is while the fingers on the women’s gloves are the right width, they are coming up short on length. The men’s gloves are the right length for my fingers but tend to be too wide.

Has anybody in a similar situation found gloves that work or have any suggestions on where to start?

How did you find your ladies group?

I’m the only one of my girls who loves golf, and I’ve been struggling to find a ladies group I’ll like. I signed up for ladies league at my course, I’ve been playing with them for 3 years, and we still have nothing in common.

probably because most of them are 20 years older (I’m 45).

Is there anyone who found a squad outside of regular group?

Anyone have issues with Cobra Air X? Or Sportchek sending broken/used clubs instead of new?

Two issues:

Ordered a new Air X Fairway 3 wood from Sportcheck, and it seemed to be brand new as expected, no scratches or anything, but upon using it for about 20 minutes I then swung it in the air without hitting a ball and I heard a crack, and noticed a line near the bottom of the grip that looks like a pressure crack or something that will eventually break. I'm hopefully getting it replaced today, but the store I'm exchanging it in only has 1 more in stock and it's a floor model - so it may be worse.

I also ordered a new combo set of Cobra Air X women's clubs from Sportchek and they arrived "new" with wrap and stickers on them but after taking everything off I noticed all of the clubs were extremely pitted, chipped, scratched, like massively! It looks like someone was hitting them on pavement or something for a long time. Even old vintage clubs at thrift stores don't look this bad. This store I'm heading to again today only has 1 set in stock that I can exchange them for, and it's another floor model.

I'm wondering if this is a sign that I should just totally return the Air X and get something "better" …My issue is my current swing speed is around 55-60 and I'm quite weak and short so I thought these would be my best bet for such a slow swing, but they seem very flimsy.

Why do people act this way?

Yesterday I golfed with a friend and her husband. My friend and I were playing a two-person scramble against him. He's always been very competitive, but yesterday he took it to another level.

On the seventh hole, a par 5, we had about a 3-foot putt for birdie. My friend putted first. As she started her stroke, her husband, who was standing about 4 feet away, yelled, "Miss it!" as loudly as he could.

It startled her, she jerked the putter, and she missed.

He immediately started laughing. We both called him an asshole. His only response was, "Yeah, I'm an asshole," while he kept laughing.

By that point I was so irritated that I missed the same 3-foot putt, so instead of making birdie, we settled for par.

This isn't the first time he's acted like this on the course. On a previous round, after hitting a bad chip shot, he threw his club.

I play golf to have fun, and I don't enjoy playing with people who act like this. I think I’m going to refuse to play with him any more.

Just curious – do women golfers play betting games on the course, or is that mostly a guys thing?

My group has been playing Nassau forever and I started wondering how universal it actually is. Do women’s foursomes typically run internal games – skins, birdies, closest to the pin – or is it more of a “just play your round” culture?

And if you do play games, what are your favorites? Always looking to steal a good format.

Cheating

I just played in our club championship (to support and take a little pride in our club). Last year only 1 lady was in the ladies division so I signed up so she could at least beat someone haha. But there was 8 of us total this year which was better.

It was a 2 day total gross. I didn’t play very well at all. I shot 105 the first day and I had 3 balls go out of bounds. I play by the rules every round with my husband and hold myself to a standard. Going into the tournament I was most nervous about following the rules if something came up I’ve never experience before. I take the rules seriously.. I don’t understand how you can’t? Anyways yesterday as I was looking for my ball the girl in the group ahead(who legit acts like she owns the course and has golfed since she was 4) was helping me look and I said well I hit a provisional in case I went out of bounds(it was my second shot on a par 5). And she looked at me and said oh I don’t know that rule…… I was like ummm pardon?! I was shook. In her group she has golfed the longest so I know she was the one directing the rules day 1. She said she shot 87. Well today she got paired with a legit golfer and ended up shooting 103. (Both her and her dad were walking around stating she’s NEVER shot that in her life… seriously? Give me a break.

The girl 1 stroke behind me day one ended up shooting 144 today…. Another girl shot 92 day 1 and 120 today. So everyone’s magically shooting these rounds on day 1 when you can golf with friends and family and on day 2 when you are paired with senior ladies that know the rules you blow up. I was the only lady that improved my score day 2.

The 2 I golfed with also acted like they knew the rules but I had to get into it with them and say no you absolutely do not get relief from landing in a divot. No you do not get relief from being beside a tree…yes it’s a stroke if you whiff the ball… like basic golf stuff. The one girl said she’s played competitive golf her entire life. Seriously?! How do you play your entire life and not know the basic rules.
The other girl legit was slashing off strokes. I called her after it happened twice and then it happened 2 more times and I was like wow. If she was in contention to win I would have absolutely called her out about it but she didn’t so I just kept quiet but annoyed. I realized I’m playing a game that I legit think only 1 other girl was playing(ended up being the club champion so that’s good). But wow… my first ever individual golf tournament and I’m sooooo frustrated. I love ladies golf and love when ladies shoot good and I always root for women but wow do I hate loosing to cheaters. I know there’s always going to be cheaters but I am so frustrated I don’t think I can put myself through that again.

Ladies, what’s your go-to “please no unsolicited advice” spiel?

Newbie here! At a recent lesson, my instructor recommended I have a stock spiel ready to go when at the range or golfing alone for when men (not all!!!) offer unsolicited advice. Do you have one, and what is it?

I had the most incredible day at the range today

I didn’t delete a single shot for this session. I still can’t believe it. I know I’m not a long hitter and I’ve (mostly) come to terms with it, and have just been focusing on consistency.

I’m still struggling with my 6 iron and 5 hybrid — the grouping of colors in the middle from 120-140 are my 7i, 6i, and 5 hybrid lol.

I know the next time I golf, it won’t be as great as this so I’m just posting this victory to remind myself the next time I slice my shot in front of everyone that I’m not actually that terrible 🥲m

I also just want to say for the other ladies: I’ve been really struggling with comparing my swing to all the other girls on IG because my swing is pretty ugly. I’ve done all the things to try and make my swing look pretty but it would always result in bad shots. I’ve just come to accept that I have an ugly swing and that’s fine. I’d rather have an ugly swing and a great game than the other way around 🤷🏻‍♀️

A moment for the little wins - broke 110 today!

With temps >100 degrees and multiple moments of chunking or topping the ball, I finally broke 110. I’ve given myself a goal to maintain consistency and keep playing regularly. Only gives me more motivation for my next goal!!! Happy golfing ladies!!

Wife is starting to golf. Equipment help.

My wife is taking up golf. Judging by the Amazon boxes that are showing up at my house i believe she has the bug. I want to make golfing as enjoyable for her as it is for me.

I quickly discovered that there is a huge difference as well as a disparity in clubs designed for women. She wants to start slowly upgrading her clubs with used quality clubs before she goes and gets a complete bag fitted for her.

What are some brands and models that have been successful for you ladies? She absolutely smokes my titleist gt1 4 hybrid so im thinking thats a good place to start for her.

This is her journey so I want to be able to help her as much as possible so my favorite person will be my favorite golfing partner. Thank you all in advanced

Clubs In A Bag

Follow-up to the previous post. Which clubs are usually in a ladies’ bag? One store I visited said Driver, 5w, 5h, 6h, 7i-9i, PW/SW and Putter. I understand everyone plays different clubs but just trying to feel out what a normal bag looks like.
