Katara came into BARC as a stray on 10/8. She was just 9 weeks old and arrived with significant medical concerns, including widespread hair loss and an injury to her right hind leg. Her intake condition was classified as severe.

No behavioral evaluations have been documented for Katara.

🚑 Medical Notes:

• 10/8: Katara weighed 11.5 lbs and received a 4/9 medical assessment. Veterinary staff noted that her right hind leg appeared to be broken. She was also experiencing significant hair loss across her entire body.
• 10/8: A veterinary examination documented widespread hair loss and lameness, with Katara unable to bear weight on her right hind leg. A skin scraping was performed and returned negative. The veterinarian assessed her skin condition as dermatitis, potentially associated with flea allergy dermatitis.
• Flea medication was administered, and carprofen was prescribed for pain and inflammation.
• The veterinarian recommended rescue placement for further diagnostics and treatment.
• She received routine intake vaccines, deworming, and flea prevention.

2 year old Frenchie girl Hilda is incredibly sweet, but her body is failing her.

She was found as a stray & adopted on 9/15, but returned today for medical care after her spinal condition progressed to the point where she is now unable to walk on her hindquarters.

Hilda has severe intervertebral disc disease. Her radiographs showed narrowed disc spaces at L5-L7 with calcified discs, along with collapsed disc spacing from T10-T13 on all views. She has previously dragged both rear legs, causing sores on top of her paws, & has had paraparesis, meaning she had some rear-leg movement at one point. She is now experiencing paralysis in her hindquarters.

This condition also affects more than her ability to walk. Hilda has experienced urinary incontinence & was diagnosed with a UTI, with blood, white blood cells, bacteria, calcium oxalate crystals, & struvite crystals found in her urine. Because of her IVDD, she is prone to recurrent UTIs & constipation & may require a prescription urinary diet. She needs follow-up with a full-service vet as well as a surgeon / neurologist.

She also has an aural hematoma on her right ear pinna & bilateral otitis externa (ear infections), for which she received ear meds, & she has been restarted on Carprofen for pain.

Hilda requires a serious commitment to vet care. She needs someone who understands that taking on a Frenchie with severe IVDD can mean significant, ongoing medical expenses, specialty care, & a lot of patience.

She is just the sweetest little girl. Today, she happily allowed pets & was calm, gentle, & easy to handle. All she wants is people & affection.

She needs a verified vet appt before leaving, & someone prepared to give her the long-term care her condition requires.

📝 Shelter Notes:

10/3: Property manager reported that a tenant abandoned two pit bulls inside their unit and requested assistance having them removed. A 24-hour notice was posted.

10/7: Buddy spent the day standing at the front of his kennel, barking continuously.

10/8: Buddy continued barking throughout the day. He walked on a loose leash and greeted neighboring dogs with a relaxed body and wagging tail, although he barked while in the runs.

10/9: Buddy was vocal throughout the day but quieted with extra enrichment, treats or attention.

10/10: Buddy continued to be vocal throughout the day but responded positively to enrichment, treats and attention. He walked on a semi-loose leash to and from the runs, although he remained very vocal while outside.

🩺 Medical Notes:

10/3: Buddy weighed 73 lbs at intake. Staff noted significant infections in both ears requiring a sedated cleaning.

10/3: Veterinary examination described Buddy as friendly but uncomfortable with his ears being touched. Both ear flaps were severely swollen, with purulent discharge inside the ear canals and draining down his cheeks. A chronic ear infection was suspected.

10/4: Buddy underwent sedated cleaning of both ears and received Claro otic medication. He was also given medications associated with the procedure, including ketamine and ketoprofen.

Buddy received routine vaccinations, deworming and flea prevention. His heartworm test was NEGATIVE.

Buddy will need veterinary follow-up to ensure his painful ear infections are resolving.

💖 Buddy Dog has already been abandoned once, and now his life is at risk. This handsome boy is understandably vocal in the shelter, but staff have noticed that he settles with treats, enrichment and attention. Despite his painful ears and stressful surroundings, he has greeted neighboring dogs with a relaxed body and wagging tail. Buddy deserves a chance to feel comfortable, loved and safe again. Please help give this sweet boy the second chance he deserves. 💙

Arlo is the cutest 10 month old sweetheart. I approached him at his kennel and all he wanted to do was give kisses through the kennel door. I was able to leash him and he walked on the leash with some pulling on the leash which I expected with his age and the fact that he is a young dog with energy. Poor baby just wants to play! Once he got his energy out in the run you could see what a wonderful dog he is. He is affectionate, loving, playful and sweet! He did great with his temperament test. He seemingly wanted to play with the other dog.

He is good boy I just think just like the other dogs/puppies at the shelter it’s a lot on them to be cooped up in a small kennel for hours on end! I hope he gets the chance to experience the life he deserves!

📝 Shelter Notes:

9/25: Arlo displayed a wiggly body but pulled tightly on the leash heading to the runs. While outside, a neighboring shepherd was barking continuously at other dogs. Arlo raised his hackles and paced around the run before moving to the far end, away from the other dog. When returning to his kennel, he ran with a tight leash toward the other dog.

10/1: Arlo greeted staff with a wiggly body, high, fast-wagging tail and soft, open-mouthed smile. He walked with forward pressure on the leash while picking up treats from the trail.

10/10: Arlo greeted staff at his kennel door with a wiggly body, fast-wagging tail and soft, smiling mouth with his tongue out. He walked on a semi-forward leash and occasionally picked up treats. Once returned to his kennel, he began lunging and barking at other dogs passing by. He ignored treats while focused on the dogs but lowered his head and returned to his bed following a firm verbal correction. Staff covered his kennel and continued monitoring.

10/11: While on leash, Arlo lunged and growled with raised hackles at other dogs in the kennels. He engaged in fence fighting with a neighboring dog in the run and continued lunging and growling toward other dogs. Once returned to his kennel, he barked deeply and jumped against the kennel door when other dogs passed.

🩺 Medical Notes:

9/23: Arlo weighed 44.4 lbs at intake. His initial medical examination was normal. He received routine vaccinations, deworming and parasite prevention. His heartworm test was negative.

💖 Arlo is just 11 months old, and his life is already on the line. This handsome young boy has greeted staff with a wiggly body, enthusiastic tail wags and the sweetest smile. Unfortunately, the shelter environment appears to be overwhelming him, and his reactions toward other dogs have escalated. Arlo desperately needs an experienced, patient foster or adopter with a calm, dog-free environment where he can decompress and receive appropriate guidance. Went to the bathroom right away spent some time sniffing and then just wanted to come hang out and get all the affection. Also was totally unbothered by the barking dog and very loud children in the next yard.

She immediately began exploring and checking things out. She wagged her tail often while we were together. She knows how to sit and takes treats nicely. She loved playing, she would run after the ball and also run around with me. I sat on the bench and she came over to get pets, when I stopped she indicated she wanted more pets. She had a happy friendly sweet demeanor

Waffles was super excited to get time out of her kennel! Once in the play yard, she was so excited, she couldn't decide what to do, run, play, get loved on...all of it. She was a little jumpy, but not bad, an she settled down. She just needed to get that fresh out of the kennel burst of energy out. She has the cutest personality and is such a joyful girl! I was easily able to get her to focus on me to sit and stay for a video. She just patiently looked at me and stayed where she was for 30 seconds. This girl is a gem and so beautiful!

10/10 Daycation:

Waffles is one of the longest stay pups at the shelter, and we do not understand why no one has scooped up this precious girl. She is a cute little size, loves people, is affectionate, and loves to give kisses. She connected quickly with us and just loves getting attention. We love this girl so much!

I posted a few weeks ago, hoping to have better luck this time.

My name is Gaurav. I run Safe Haven Jaigaon, a solo street dog and cat rescue on the India-Bhutan border.

I have to be brutally honest with you today. I failed them.

For the past few days, I was completely bedridden with a severe illness. I couldn't work. I couldn't fundraise. I couldn't do my daily morning rounds.

My family tried their absolute best to hold down the fort, but this operation relies entirely on me, my local shop, and the daily donations we receive. They did not have the funds or the physical ability to manage a street pack of 20+ dogs on their own.

Because of this, the food ran out.

When I finally got back on my feet today and went to my spot, my heart shattered. Bruno, Mama Cat, and the rest of the pack are weak, skinny, and malnourished. They have lost weight. They are hungry. They have been surviving on scraps and starvation just like they were before I found them.

I am fully recovered now. I am back. But I am completely broke. I have zero funds to feed them today.

I am in survival mode. I am not asking for the shelter today. I am not asking for Mama Cat's spay today. I am asking for food, right now, before they lose any more weight.

9/15: Beavis was described as very wiggly during intake.

9/17: Beavis displayed a loose, wiggly body and walked on a loose leash.

9/19: Beavis walked on a loose leash, showed interest in treats and remained quiet in his kennel.

10/6: Beavis greeted staff at his kennel door with a loose, wiggly body, fast-wagging tail and perked ears. He was easily leashed and walked on a loose leash to and from the outdoor runs. While outside, he got the zoomies and tried to play with neighboring dogs by play bowing and running along the fence line.

10/9: Beavis was standing at the front of his kennel when staff approached. He walked on a semi-tight leash to the outdoor run and back. Once returned to his kennel, he began throwing water from his bowl and watched staff while they attempted to clean it.

10/10: Beavis was a little vocal during morning feeding and cleaning. He greeted staff at his kennel door with a wiggly body, fast-wagging tail and soft, open mouth with his tongue hanging out. He walked on a loose leash to and from the outdoor runs.

🩺 Medical Notes:

9/15: Beavis weighed approximately 43 lbs and received routine vaccinations, deworming and parasite prevention. He tested negative for heartworms.

9/21: Beavis was neutered.

9/28: Beavis developed sneezing and nasal discharge. Veterinary staff diagnosed a canine upper respiratory infection (URI) and prescribed doxycycline 200 mg once daily for 10 days.

10/8: Beavis continued showing symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. His doxycycline treatment was extended for another five days.

💖 Beavis is barely a year old, and this happy, playful boy has so much life ahead of him! Shelter staff describe him as a wiggly, affectionate youngster who loves treats, walks nicely on a leash and gets the most adorable zoomies when he's outside. He's even tried to make friends with neighboring dogs by play bowing and running along the fence! Despite battling a respiratory infection, his playful spirit hasn't faded. Beavis needs a loving foster who can give him a safe place to recover, plenty of affection and the chance to enjoy being a young dog. He has so much love and happiness left to give. Please don't let his life end in a shelter. 💙

Force has several medical conditions, including spondylosis of the lumbar spine, bilateral hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis of the left stifle (knee) joint, and heartworm disease (HW+). These conditions may affect his mobility, comfort, and overall well-being. He needs further veterinary care to help manage his medical needs and determine the best course of treatment.

DX: Xray (RL & VD View Lumbar spine, Pelvis and both rear legs)=Significant spondylosis down lumbar spine, Hip dysplasia bilaterally and significant osteoarthritis in the left stifle joint.

TX: Carprofen (50mg/ml) 1.8cc SQ

RX: Carprofen 100mg 1T SID 7 days

RX: Gabapentin 100mg 2C BID 7 days

Reversed sedation with Atipamezole (5mg/ml) .4cc IM

Look at this handsome 2-year-old boy! This is Big Mac (ID: A598242), a 67.8 lb Pit Bull who desperately needs an experienced rescue, foster, or adopter to step up and save his life right now!

Big Mac's time is up. He is listed as RESCUE ONLY at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter with an absolute final deadline Today, October 4th at 2:00 PM PDT. No extensions can be granted!

Big Mac has shown aggressive behaviors in the shelter towards other dogs over space and food guarding. It is important to remember that high-stress shelter life can push dogs to display aggressive behaviors that they normally would not display, or the behavior could be a result of how Big Mac was previously socialized and cared for. Big Mac will require someone who understands him, understands how to care for and train him to correct aggressive guarding behaviors, as well as someone who has strong experience with the breed.

There are plenty of experienced handlers and trainers who know how to help a dog like Big Mac succeed. In the right environment with clear structure, management, and training, Big Mac can become a happier dog who isn't expending energy on things that heighten his stress levels.
