๐Ÿ’œ Volunteer Notes

I met Lucy in October and she was one of my favorites to think she was failed again and now is in this situation with so many babies makes me sick to my stomach. These are the horror stories the shelter is trying to prevent and yet it happened anyways.

October 2024: I love Lucy. I'm not talking about the show I'm talking about this perfect puppers. She knows how to put on the charm that's for sure. Anyone that greets her gets the same sweet greeting where she gives a smile and looks all cute. She was easy to leash and didn't have any problem walking by any of the dogs. She played with a pup in the run and loved running back and forth. She enjoys belly rubs and playing which is the perfect package in my opinion. She knows how to relax and knows how to have fun. I saw several people have her out today and every time they brought her back she just would relax in her kennel. She's so quiet! I'm surprised no one has snatched this girl up yet.

๐Ÿ“ Shelter Notes:

October 2024

Approaching kennel, dog was sitting down in the front. I opened the door and she then pancaked, keeping her head low.

I placed the leash but dog remained in potion so I then slowly entered and got behind her, as I was picking her up I could hear that she was softly crying. I carried her outside the kennel and then placed her on floor. As I was petting and baby talking her, she wagged her tail and looked at me with soft eyes. As I was petting her head, she would gently close her eyes and lick her lips, and get closer to my legs. After spending a minute with her, she followed me and walked loosely with a wagging tail. She occasionally would freeze and look at me with soft eyes and a wagging tail, I had to baby talk and pet her again for her to continue walking. While outside, I squatted down again and she quickly came forward to sit next to me. While petting her outside, she got on her back with tummy up and was enjoying the belly rubs with closed eyes and a smile.

Coming back inside, she walked with a more relaxed body. After placing her in kennel, I closed the door and then started to pet her through door. She sat in placed licking her lips and closing her eyes in comfort as I petted her head. She was super and friendly towards me,

In the afternoon I was able to take her outside so she could have more outside time and adjust to the outside setting since in the morning she was a bit timid. Again, she slowly walked on the leash and needed a lot of encouragement to walk. She often pulled back but I was able to redirect her with with baby talk and pets. She ignored treats and baby talk seemed to be working better with her. When coming back inside she walked on a loose leash, still occasionally stopping. Again, responding super well to being pet, loves the attention.

dog was laying down and when i approched dog had whale eyes and as i got closer dog had lowered head down and as i opened the kennel door wider for dog to get out she pancaked and i had to carry out and carry to next kennel.

spoke to potential adopter about her delay in surgery due to URI. Was told that we had noticed that she was limping and upon looking at the radiographs on her RF there was a healing fracture. She was told that she would be going home on carprofen and doxy for her to give at home. She still wanted to move forward with the adoption.

๐Ÿš‘ Medical Notes:

๐Ÿ“ Shelter Notes:

5/18/2026: Dog presented tense body, whale/dilated eyes. I notice he still had a leash on him and once I place my leash around the dogs neck, he bolted out of the kennel. The dog then started thrashing on the leash, biting the leash, I tried to put him back in his kennel but he kept pulling back. It took me a few minutes to get behind him and to nudge him back in the kennel while he was still biting on the leash.

5/19/2026: Laying at the back of the kennel, while presenting whale eyes and tense body. while lip licking.

5/20/2026: Approaching kennel, dog is laying down with head tucked. ACT noted he does not like to walk on the leash so she has to carry him. I entered the kennel and sat down next to him and he sat up, not moving away from me. I pet his head and body as he stayed still. The other technician brought his vaccines for intake work up and I completed the work up in the kennel using a light muzzle and no restraint. Dog did not flinch or try to move away, just sat calmly next to me.

5/19/2026: Timid in kennel and tried to avoid the leash when i first approach. Once leashed he walks out with low head, body close to the ground and tucked tail. With baby talk he scoots close to me and tries to tuck his head under my arms. He allows me to pet him but due to his timid behavior leash walk him. He just looks arounds and doesnt pottyโ€ฆ he stays close to my legs. No issues placing him back into kennel because he walks in on his own and allows me to remove leash.

5/20/2026: Jerome was brought over in the am as a move adopt. Dog is very large and was placed into a small kennel so I placed him into a larger kennel. When I went to leash him he was very timid and coward away from me slamming into divider avoiding contact with me. I had to go slow and leash him and even then he still was avoiding me. Within a couple of minutes of placing into a new bigger kennel he painted in kennel and was going in circles and hitting the divider causing Gloria on opposite to stress out and not to lay on her bedding. I had to take him out and soak his kennel meanwhile having him in an empty kennel in the process. He also painted that kennel. Placing dog on beh.

IN GRAVE DANGER - EUTH COMMAND

โ€œIโ€™m Charismaโ€ฆ though right now I know that name doesnโ€™t seem to fit me. I used to be different โ€” playful, cuddly, always pressed against my person because thatโ€™s where I felt safe. But then everything changed. My parent got sick, then lost our home, and the day we said goodbye I cried into their shirt while they cried into my fur. I didnโ€™t understand why we couldnโ€™t stay together. I still donโ€™t. I just know they loved me, and I loved them, and then suddenly I was alone.

Here in the shelter Iโ€™m so scared that my whole body shakes. I hide in the corner of my kennel because itโ€™s the only place that feels small enough to hold all my fear. When people try to take me out, I panic โ€” my legs wonโ€™t move, my body freezes, and sometimes I thrash because I donโ€™t know what else to do. Iโ€™m not trying to be difficult. Iโ€™m just a tenโ€‘monthโ€‘old puppy who lost everything and doesnโ€™t know how to be brave yet.

But underneath all this trembling is the real me โ€” the girl who loves to cuddle, who follows her people from room to room, who gives soft kisses and wiggles when she trusts you. Iโ€™m playful with dogs I know, gentle with the people I love, and I want so badly to feel safe again. I just need timeโ€ฆ time to decompress, time to learn the world isnโ€™t ending, time to remember that Iโ€™m still a puppy with a whole life ahead of me.

The shelter says Iโ€™m โ€œnot acclimating,โ€ and now Iโ€™m on the list to die. I donโ€™t want my story to end here. I donโ€™t want my parent โ€” wherever they are, probably still struggling โ€” to find out that I am gone forever. I want a quiet, patient, adult home where someone will kneel beside me, speak softly, and let me come forward when Iโ€™m ready. Someone who sees past the shaking and understands that fear is not who I am โ€” itโ€™s just what happened to me.

Pleaseโ€ฆ Iโ€™m only ten months old. Iโ€™m healthy. Iโ€™m loving. Iโ€™m trying. I just need someone to save my life and give me the chance to become the dog my name promises.โ€

Experienced fosters and adopters, we need you to step up for this baby girl who did nothing wrong. Sheโ€™s lost it all, the parent she loved, the home she felt safe and loved in, and now she may lose her own life. Itโ€™s unfair. MESSAGE OUR PAGE to save her life now.

No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:

No children (under 13): Due to Charisma's intense, fearful and shut-down behaviors, we recommend an adult-only home as she may be intimidated by children.

Place with a New Hope partner: Charisma has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges:
House soiling
Resource guarding
Handling/touch sensitivity
Fearful
Anxiety
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:

House soiling: Charisma is reported to have accidents on a weekly basis in her previous home. Please see the handout on House soiling.

Resource guarding: Charisma is reported to guard her food, hovering over it with a tense body. Please see the handout on resource guarding.

Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful: Charisma has been highly fearful and shutdown during her stay in care. She moves to a corner of her kennel when handlers attempt to leash her, thrashing once leashed, and refuses to leave her kennel or walk once out. Her previous owner stated that she did not allow any form of grooming, including nail trims. And she was fearful when restrained and when her collar is grabbed. Please see handouts on Decompression period and Handling/touch sensitivity.

Anxiety: Charisma is reported to be anxious in the previuos home, but her owner did not elaborate on how this behavior manifested or if any steps were taken to modify these behaviors. If Charisma displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see hadnout on generalized anxiety.

On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Charisma is reported to bark and growl at moving objects during walks. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.

Only yesterday a dog died at BARC because a rescue couldn't find a Houston, TX, foster. Don't let the same happen to poor Drake, a 4Y HW- male Austr Cattle Dog, whose adopter has backed out! Adoption to US/Canada. Don't respond to me: fill out the foster application or the adoption one in the post!

Foster application for Mustard Seed Farm Animal Sanctuary: https://form.jotform.com/msfanimalsanctuary/Fosterapplication

Adoption application for same: https://msfanimalsanctuary.org/adoption-form/

Drake is a 4Y HW- male Australian Cattle Dog mix just tagged from the BARC euthanasia list two days ago. He is one of the few from that list still alive.

Once you have completed and submitted the foster application, alert Mustard Seed to your application by e-mailing them at Msfanimalsanctuary@gmail.com or message them on FB at https://www.facebook.com/share/14hpTvwyarM/

Then message OP or u/BanditY77 so we can give them a nudge, too.

Fostering is LOVE! all expenses paid! How can you turn that down and cost Drake his life at the same time?

I met Lucy in October and she was one of my favorites to think she was failed again and now is in this situation with so many babies makes me sick to my stomach. These are the horror stories the shelter is trying to prevent and yet it happened anyways.

October 2024: I love Lucy. Iโ€™m not talking about the show Iโ€™m talking about this perfect puppers. She knows how to put on the charm thatโ€™s for sure. Anyone that greets her gets the same sweet greeting where she gives a smile and looks all cute. She was easy to leash and didnโ€™t have any problem walking by any of the dogs. She played with a pup in the run and loved running back and forth. She enjoys belly rubs and playing which is the perfect package in my opinion. She knows how to relax and knows how to have fun. I saw several people have her out today and every time they brought her back she just would relax in her kennel. Sheโ€™s so quiet! Iโ€™m surprised no one has snatched this girl up yet.

October 2024

Approaching kennel, dog was sitting down in the front. I opened the door and she then pancaked, keeping her head low.

I placed the leash but dog remained in potion so I then slowly entered and got behind her, as I was picking her up I could

hear that she was softly crying. I carried her outside the kennel and then placed her on floor. As I was petting and baby

talking her, she wagged her tail and looked at me with soft eyes. As I was petting her head, she would gently close her eyes

and lick her lips, and get closer to my legs. After spending a minute with her, she followed me and walked loosely with a

wagging tail. She occasionally would freeze and look at me with soft eyes and a wagging tail, I had to baby talk and pet

her again for her to continue walking. While outside, I squatted down again and she quickly came forward to sit next to me.

While petting her outside, she got on her back with tummy up and was enjoying the belly rubs with closed eyes and a smile.

Coming back inside, she walked with a more relaxed body. After placing her in kennel, I closed the door and then started

to pet her through door. She sat in placed licking her lips and closing her eyes in comfort as I petted her head. She was

super and friendly towards me,

In the afternoon I was able to take her outside so she could have more outside time and adjust to the outside setting since

in the morning she was a bit timid. Again, she slowly walked on the leash and needed a lot of encouragement to walk. She

often pulled back but I was able to redirect her with with baby talk and pets. She ignored treats and baby talk seemed to

be working better with her. When coming back inside she walked on a loose leash, still occasionally stopping. Again,

responding super well to being pet, loves the attention.

dog was laying down and when i approched dog had whale eyes and as i got closer dog had lowered head down and as

i opened the kennel door wider for dog to get out she pancaked and i had to carry out and carry to next kennel.

spoke to potential adopter about her delay in surgery due to URI. Was told that we had noticed that she was limping and

upon looking at the radiographs on her RF there was a healing fracture. She was told that she would be going home on

carprofen and doxy for her to give at home. She still wanted to move forward with the adoption.

Hello,

Snowflake was turned in as a stray on 12-26-25. She is young, energetic, and vocal. She has no medical conditions noted.

Please let us know if you can help Snowflake, she will be in danger on 1-3-26.

๐Ÿ“ Shelter Notes:

12/28 Approaching her kennel she was standing by the door quietly, tail down, tensed, trembling. Walks on a tight leash pulling

forward. While outside she just looked around very alert ears forward. Walking back in she was flinchy as i was checking her

ID band. Placed her into new kennel and took leash off no issue

12/29 While Nellie was in the outside run, she was consistently vocalizing and jumping on the run gate. Overly aroused even when

she was being walked, she was walked on a tight leash and would attempt to chase come birds when treats were on the

ground for her. When she was in her run, she would sometimes yelp and cry in the run for a short time.

During PM feeding, Nellie was still being overly aroused and jumping up on the gate. As I entered the run, she started to

jump on me and paw at my stomach. I gave her treats on her cot to redirect her.

12/30 During morning feeding, Nellie was bouncing around in her run and yelping. During morning walks, she was still being overly

aroused in her run and even painted in her run. While walking, Nellie was walked on a tight leash and pulling in different

directions and while in the run, she was jumping and pawing at the gate. On the way back, she was bouncing around me

and walked on a tight leash still. I offered treats but she continued after eating the treats. She even attempted to chase

some birds.

1/1 jumping on kennel door nonstop when trying to leash she is trying to jump with mouth open towards my face. when

leashing she began to pull forward on tight leash outside she begins to whine when i walk away. coming back to go leash

her she is jumpin nonstop i have to fully step in and try to leash while she is jumping upwards.

5/18 tense body, had to muzzle during working. Growling in vehicle, foster had to bring in
