Best usage of points?

So I have a cba gold awards credit card which Ive got justover 80,000 points. What is the bestuse of these points now. Do I........

a) just let them transfer to yello points

b) redeem a myer card or similar

c) take the cash (about $100 less than vouchers)

d) transfer to velocity or qantas points, however I cant see this as an option.

Appreciate the help

Replacement for CommBank Smart Awards CC after todays announcement

Any cc's out there that you know of of that has no FX fees, travel insurance and decent rewards without requiring a package account, home loan or transaction account?

I Took out a CommBank Smart Awards back in April 26, but with the announced changes

its pretty much removed every reason I had it.

The changes they have done are:

  • Return of international transaction fees
  • Monthly fee no longer waived
  • Rewards program effectively gutted - Dont have a Transaction Account so dont qualify for Yello points
  • Travel insurance and other benefits reduced

For me, Smart Awards is basically dead from 1 Oct onwards.

Quite a few have announced it seems so just worth asking here if there is something that covers this unicorn list.....

  • No international transaction fees
  • Rewards or cashback (doesn't need to be Qantas)
  • Complimentary travel insurance
  • Reasonable annual fee
  • Visa or Mastercard (not Amex)
  • Additional cardholder option
  • Standalone credit card (no linked transaction account, package account or home loan required)
  • Suited to someone who pays the balance in full every month

I've already ruled out:

  • CommBank - no longer worth it
  • Westpac - not good product
  • Macquarie - home loan
  • ING - requries transaction account
  • Revolout - expensive

Current shortlist:

  1. Bankwest More Platinum
  2. Bankwest More World
  3. NAB Rewards Travel (currently NAB Rewards Signature)

Bankwest has announced rewards earn rate changes from 1 Oct, but they appear to be retaining no FX fees, travel insurance and cashback redemption options.

NAB has increased to a fixed $395 annual fee and rewards program changes from 1 Oct.

  • Anything Ive missed here to be on a shortlist to look at?
  • Worth waiting or moving given these annoncements have happened to BW and NAB already?

Commbank Smart Awards CC Qantas FF Changing

Hello,

I got my very first CC - the cheapest Commbank Smart Awards CC last December to earn Qantas FF points. I’m single and spend around $2k per month on expenses. They currently waive the fee when I hit $2k of monthly spending and only charge $90 pa to opt in for Qantas FF.

Looks like they’re making a lot of changes to their program and Qantas FF will no longer be available for their Smart Awards CC starting on the 1st of October. They will also stop waiving their fee starting next year. https://www.commbank.com.au/credit-cards/card-updates.html

I’ve already received my sign up bonus points and the main reason why I got it in the first place was because of the monthly fee being waived and the low spending limit.

Questions:
- Would closing the account and getting a different credit card before the 1st of October either from Commbank or a different bank negatively affect my credit score?
- What if I wait until December to finish 12 months before closing it, would it also negatively affect my credit score?
- Would they also take back the points they gave me for signing up?
- Any other CC I should consider that is also quite cheap for a low spender like me? I just want to earn Qantas FF for my everyday spending.

Thank you!

Are there any “gotchas” to be mindful of when using complimentary travel insurance?

I am looking at booking a Europe trip over Christmas. Just slightly longer than a month.

It’ll be my first time utilising the travel insurance from booking flights with a credit card.

I have these 2 cards available:
* Qantas AMEX Ultimate
* Qantas Money Platinum

I will be doing a few days skiing. I assume I need to add that on, how do I go about doing that?

And it will be a “multi city” booking if that’s relevant.

Do you get some sort of confirmation? I guess my fear is I think everything is done and then I get a little surprise if I were to need it…

Recc please - next churn after Virgin Money - Velocity Points

Just closed my Virgin Money High Flyer Credit Card, which is the only one I've had in the last 12 months. I've got to have all credit cards under my name closed by the end of the year, in about roughly four months, due to some finance obligations.

Is there anything I can churn and get the bonus points on in the meantime?

Ideally avoiding ANZ because the application process from memory was very tedious and drawn out, taking weeks. The last one I did a couple of years ago, I just cancelled after a while, after incessant calls from India asking for this and that .

Qantas Points Reduction - NAB

I just received an email from NAB:

The Qantas Points earn rate of 1 Qantas Point / $1 spend on eligible purchases up to $5,000, then 0.5 Qantas Points / $1 capped at $20,000 spend in a statement period, will change to the following rate:

0.75 Qantas Points / $1 on eligible purchases up to $3,000 then, 0.25 Qantas Points / $1 spend on eligible purchases from $3,001 to $15,000 spend (capped), in a statement period.

So currently, $5k spend gets me 5000 points, soon I'll need to spend $14k to earn 5000 points. RIP. (Edit: for comparison, $5,000 spend will earn 2,750 points from October).

I already got my 100k bonus but this doesn't bode well. I knew it was coming, but damn, it's significant.

Annual fee

Was reading today about how much St George has cut back its Amplify and Amplify Qantas rewards program. We have the Amplify signature black Qantas but just paid the annual fee which was $370 (it was our mistake, we overlooked the 12 months anniversary date). Now that the card is so crap in terms of ongoing rewards I’m wondering if we cancel it now will we get a pro-rata annual fee refund?

Credit cards with no foreign fees but with points

Is this a unicorn? We are looking for a credit card which has no foreign transaction fees but accumulates points for an upcoming overseas trip (Singapore air). Amex platinum is great but the 3%+ fx fees mean it’s not viable to pay for the overseas hotels etc. We usually use debit cards but given how much ww are spending are looking for the above to fund our next trip 🙂

Is Amex equally strict with their existing churner customers?

I have the Amex Qantas discovery and combank ultimate awards as my keeper cards. I also have a NAB Qantas signature which I recently for just for the bonus points and planning to cancel soon.

I'm planning to apply for Amex Explorer as a keeper card after cancelling NAB. Any idea if they will accept considering I have been churning but also their existing customer?

How long should I wait to apply for the same card after being rejected?

hi

i applied for a westpac altitude black credit card a month ago but got instantly rejected. At the time I had two other credit cards (one with 6k limit and one with 10k limit). In the past I've had no issues holding multiple credit cards (up until 30k limit) so I thought applying for this card at a 6k limit would cause no issues.

I have closed off the 10k recently and only have one card open. I want to try to re-apply for this credit card before the changes that come up before 1st of October. How long should I wait in between applications to apply for the same card? How do I make sure that I don't get rejected for this again?

I've held 7 different cards in the past 24 months so initially thought it was for my history.

Thanks

Is churning all but over?

There was a post in here yesterday about the huge reduction in the ANZ Qantas Black signup bonus, and I noticed this “Offer ends 30 September 2026” in the NAB Qantas Signature offer page. Is churning effectively over from 1 October?

40,000 points for a $6k min spend - that juice isn’t worth the squeeze imo.

Qantas Money Cards and NAB Cards Exclusion Period

Hi everyone! I currently hold the Qantas Titanium card and thinking to churn the NAB Signature card.

I've never held a NAB card before, but is the Qantas Titanium card considered a NAB card for the exclusion period? Has anyone got any experience with these two cards?

Thank you!!

HSBC Cards closing November 18, 2026

Commented in another thread, but wanted to make it more visible since a number of us are collectively grieving.

There has not been any email from HSBC yet, but the FAQ on Star Alliance says cards are closing November 18, 2026.

What is happening to the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card?

As per its communication to customers on 12 August 2026, HSBC will be closing its retail banking business in Australia. Consequently, the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card will be closed on 18 November 2026 and your agreement with HSBC will end. For more information from HSBC go to: https://www.hsbc.com.au/help/important-notices

What happens to the Star Alliance Silver or Gold status earned through the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card?

Further updates to Star Alliance Silver and Gold status benefits will be provided by HSBC as soon as they are confirmed.

What will happen to my Star Alliance Silver or Gold Status?

There are no changes to your existing Star Alliance Silver or Gold status already issued by your status airline.

There are more questions in the FAQ should you wish to peruse, but if you do get issued something for next year, then it looks like you keep your status for 2027.

Also probably worth it to just keep generically spending on it for SA points and converting them as late as possible.

I also hear that it is hard to get approved for citi cards…

Let me know what you think. Thanks!
