Michael Jai White Cinematic Universe (MCU)

This has probably been done before but out pure boredom — I made my own Michael Jai White cinematic universe with a bunch of his movies, all with the idea of him playing the same character lol.

  • 1. Falcon Rising (The Soldier Backstory): Watch this first. He plays John "Falcon" Chapman, a former Marine suffering from PTSD. This works perfectly as the "origin story" before he gets into trouble with the law.

  • 2. Undisputed II: Last Man Standing (The Prison Era): Since he is already a trained killer from the Marines, this chapter shows him surviving a brutal Russian prison by fighting in the ring.

  • 3. Blood and Bone (The Fresh Start): He is fresh out of jail, using his prison fight skills to clean up the underground street circuit.

  • 4. Never Back Down 2 & 3 (The Mentor Years): He settles down, grows older, and passes his elite skills down to the next generation of MMA fighters. (Not a fan of the plot of NBD 2, bad writing imo haha)

  • 5. The Hard Way (The Final Mission): Watch this last. He plays a retired elite assassin who comes out of retirement for one final, personal mission. It is a great "old man" action finale for your character.

OH MY!

Jet Li and his sister posing for a picture off the camera. (I'm 95% sure, im reaching way back in memory) Martial Arts of Shaolin 1986-ish? Good comedy. Not as funny as Fong Sai Yuk 1 and 2, but still good.

Snake in the Eagles Shadow

What an absolute treat of a movie this was. I hadn’t seen the film in ages, the last time being on VHS back in the 90’s, it felt like a whole new experience watching it now in Blu Ray.

Although I love the old school grain and wear of these classic movies, it can also be quite distracting on VHS when running through the larger modern TVs. So when the studio releases something like this that carries with it an element of grain and wear, but enhances it for even better clarity, it’s a win-win situation.

This is one of the best Jackie Chan movies, and one of the best martial arts movies in general … in my opinion. The styles and skill of Jackie are incredible to watch, and the pacing is pitch perfect. Drunken Master next 👀

Thanks to studios like 88 Films, my collection is growing fast. Looking forward to spending more money 🤣

Old Bruce Lee Photo from Malaysia

I was saw this photo while in a random cake shop in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown last year. I think man in the picture with Bruce is / was the owner of the bakery. Clearly a big fan. Just sharing.

Any examples of the "it's over, don't try it" trope

The losing side doesn't recognize they've lost even though they're still standing. The winning side just needs to apply the finishing move.

I have the higher ground moment, but in kung fu?

The Furious (My Opinion)

Just got to see The Furious a few weeks early and oh my god you guys. Believe the hype. It’s definitely one of the best modern martial arts films to date. It can be argued it might be on The Raid: Redemption‘s level. Maybe not as brutal as The Raid or The Night Comes For Us but it’s definitely close.

Story: 7/10
Very straight forward no subplot or anything extra. Certain decisions some characters made outside its core fighters was iffy. It felt like an arcade beat em’ up game in live action. They knew what we were there for and gave it their all.

Acting: 8/10

Everybody is a seasoned actor so they all kill it. The only issue is the ADR (it wasn’t bad but not the greatest) but it didn’t bother me cause it reminded me of the old school 70s-early 80s kung fu films by Shaw Brothers.

Action: 12/10

The action in this film is out of this world. As I said before the fights get better and better as the movie continues. Every martial artist in it got to shine in whatever their style or characters’ styles were. Joe Taslim got to fully incorporate his Judo to its full degree. Joey Iwanaga is a kicking machine similar to Ken Lo in Drunken Master 2 maybe arguably even better. Jeeja Yanin does a little but she gets a dope moment. Brian Le is a powerhouse beast moving like a young Sammo Hung mixed with the Toad character from 5 Deadly Venoms. Yayan Ruhian doing his thing as usual murdering and beating up guys in the most ferocious ways. And last but not least the lead, Xie Miao, I’m 26 and I grew up watching him since I was a kid when he played Je Li’s son in My Father is a Hero aka The Enforcer and New Legend of Shaolin and his recent films have been outstanding but in this movie Xie moves like a young Jet Li in his prime and I wonder if certain moments was he paying homage to him. I guess like on screen father like on screen son. That final fight between the heroes and villains is, oh my goodness it’s phenomenal. I won’t spoil too much of how it goes down but think of a modern day version of the finale of 5 Deadly Venoms. Everyone has their own style and they brawl like they have never brawled before. Hopefully a sequel happens with even more hitters in the cast.

Overall Movie Rating: 9/10

Looking for films with similar female role

My wife absolutely loved Legend of the Drunken Master and Journey to the West (2013). Particularly, she really enjoyed the main female roles in them: Jackie Chan's step-mom and Duan.

Any other martial arts movies with female roles like these?

The badass of Ghost Server/Shadow

From A Man Called Hero.

No arms, fights with kicks and his goddamn pigtail, wears a mask and the other characters barely know what he's saying. A force for good and fiercely loyal. I needed more Ghost Server in the movie.
