For context I am 58(M) middle manager living in Metro Detroit, Michigan. Salary $180K base, AGI ~$210K. $3M in assets, $260K in liabilities so $2.74M in net worth. This puts me in top 10 percentile but I don't feel rich or close to it . $1.3M in 401k; 600k in IRAs, 590K in brokerage, 200k home equity.

To put things in perspective, my index investments have produced over 300K so far this year, net of contributions, and I am up over a million in past 2.5 years due to the MN market and consistent investment. The capital base outweighs contributions 4 to 1.

My daily routines have not changed and capital investments including backdoor Roth are taking on a life of their own.

Currently working a nice FP&A job for a great company in Manhattan, 8YOE. Commute isn’t terrible and pay is good but sometimes I wonder what life would be like if I found something closer to home. Obviously the amount of opportunities are fewer here and the network will be smaller but everything has tradeoffs..

So for those who left a finance job in the city for one back home, what was your experience? Was it worth the switch?

This question is probably worded stupidly but I need a dress shirt that while holding an overhead pole, it won’t come untucked. I’m shorter and always need to get my sleeves tailored so gambling on how a shirt behaves once tailored usually doesn’t pay off for me

All the Charles Tyrwhitt shirts I’ve bought seem to have lower arm holes. My Ralph Lauren shirts are fine and ironically, the shirt that fits the best is the cheapest shirt I have from Uniqlo.

I know there’s more perfect shirts out there, who has them?

Cricket, Visible, Mint.. they use the exact same towers as the companies like Verizon and T-Mobile. And they’re half the price too. I thought the service would be inferior but after a few months on Visible (same network as Verizon), I see no difference at all. I actually have a faster plan on Visible that I pay less for than whatI had on Verizon

So if you’re skeptical.. do some research and save some money! Theres no need to pay more to essentially subsidize the costs of running a brick & mortar company

I graduated from Baruch back in 2018 with a finance BBA. 4 of the hardest years of my life but everything turned out okay in the end. I’ve established a good career in FP&A and I’m on track to have a very comfortable life. Just some perspective:

- Failure will happen and you will overcome it.. I started as an accounting major and I failed Financial Accounting with a capital F. I think I had the 2nd worst grades in the class. That F stuck on my transcript bc I refused to retake the class.

-Failure is a blessing in disguise. Because I failed ACC 3100 or whatever class it was, I switched my major to Finance which ultimately ended up being the catalyst to success. Switching to finance was the best decision I made

-Networking is really important. I made friends with people in all my classes. Not so much to go to bars and stuff, more to study and vent and have groups for projects. I can think of 3 people that were vital to me passing these classes. Without them, I’m on my own and who knows what could’ve happened

-Finally, your GPA doesn’t define you. I graduated with a 2.5 GPA bc I had 2 Fs and a few Cs. It was really scary.. during my final semester, I was calculating my GPA with hypothetical grades to see which classes I could afford to get a B and which classes I needed an A in order to get a degree. It was close but it happened. And after that, I never thought about GPA again. It didn’t go on my resume. Hiring leaders never asked. It didn’t matter in my career and now I’m doing just fine

So moral of the story is that college sucks, failure happens and then you overcome and move on with your life. And if you have any questions, I’m here for you.

Today is a slow day at my corporate America job and even tho it’s been 10yrs since I worked at Starbucks (16yrs since I started work there), I still to this day tell people it’s the best job I ever had. The people I worked with, the customers I served for years.. I look back so fondly

Honestly, I don’t get Starbucks too often anymore.. the magic is gone and it feels like a shell of what it used to be. Not to mention, my drink is now $7. But it still is nostalgic so whatever
