This 1997 burning of Reggie Miller’s Geist house is probably not new to most of this sub but I was shocked to learn how close this franchise came to losing its best player to terrible acts of violence. Reggie and his wife obviously weren’t in the home at the time their 14,000 sq ft house was burglarized and set ablaze, but the arsonists didn’t know that and this story could’ve ended very differently. They lost almost all of their personal possessions and the criminals were never caught. Miller received copycat letters for months from people who claimed they were the ones who set his house on fire. This came on the heels of an underwhelming season where they missed the playoffs, and Miller was in contract negotiations at the time. He almost left the Pacers and retired altogether. This clip from the 2004 episode of “Beyond the glory” interviews Reggie about those events.

On February 14, 1964, Elvis Presley donated his yacht to raise money for the newly created St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Pictured here is Elvis with St. Jude founder and entertainer Danny Thomas in Long Beach, California. St. Jude sold the yacht for anywhere from $60,000 to $75,000 ($646k to $810k in 2026 dollars). Thomas was well known for his connection to celebrities, and enlisted many of them to lend their fame and influence to join his campaign to eradicate pediatric cancer.
