Speech by Zhang Xianling, Member of the Tiananmen Mothers

June 4, 2026 Speech by Zhang Xianling, Member of the Tiananmen Mothers, on the 37th Anniversary of June 4th Dear friends, ladies and gentlemen, Today marks the 37th anniversary of the June 4th massacre in Beijing, China. Thank you all for coming here to mourn the civilians and students who were demonstrating peacefully but brutally murdered by the Chinese government 37 years ago. I am Zhang Xianling, 88 years old this year. As a family member of a victim and a member of the Tiananmen Mothers, I, on behalf of the Tiananmen Mothers, would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you all. Thank you for not forgetting to condemn that bloody crackdown over the past 37 years, and for not forgetting those kind people who shed their blood in the streets to speak out for the people! At that time, China had just begun its reform and opening up, and corruption was beginning to take root. Due to the dual-track pricing system and social injustice, some people with power, influence and connections amassed great wealth, and corruption began to spread. Meanwhile, ordinary people were deeply worried about the ever-increasing prices and housing costs, leading to widespread public resentment and discontent. At this critical moment, university students resolutely stood up, representing the will of the people, and through peaceful demonstrations, urged the government to take measures against corruption and ‘official profiteering’. At that time, ‘corruption’ was called ‘official profiteering’. Because of the dual-track pricing system for scarce goods, only those with power, influence and connections could resell goods and make a fortune, therefore corruption was referred to as ‘official profiteering’. The students' actions received widespread support from citizens, government agencies, and organizations. Everyone sincerely hoped that the government would take measures to stop the rampant of this phenomenon. Unexpectedly, the ruling authorities not only ignored the public's concerns, instead they deployed hundreds of thousands of heavily armed field troops in armored vehicles to brutally suppress the peaceful demonstrations of civilians and students, resulting in numerous casualties. In an instant, thousands of families suffered devastating blows. Those of us in Beijing at the time will never forget the deafening gunfire, the roar of armored vehicles, the sirens of ambulances, and the angry shouts of the crowds that night. We will never forget the silhouette of our loved ones when they left home. No one could have imagined that a government that claimed to ‘serve the people’ would order the shooting of its own people. The sacrifice of our loved ones is an indelible wound etched in our hearts. Our tears have run dry, and our sorrow is buried deep within, leaving only eternal remembrance of our loved ones and profound hatred for the crimes committed against the people. These experiences have strengthened our resolve to resist, to fight for a fair and just evaluation of the victims of the June 4th Massacre, and to demand an apology and compensation through legal procedures. Information is now readily available. If you want to know the truth, there is a wealth of comprehensive information online, including scenes of peaceful demonstrations by students and civilians, as well as graphic accounts of the massacres of protesters. As a major country that prides itself on the ‘rule of law’, the National People's Congress, the ruling authority and the highest representative body of the people’s will, should bravely confront past crimes and adopt dialogue to gradually resolve the unavoidable hurdle of June 4th. As the families of the victims, we must ‘speak the truth, refuse to forget, seek justice, and call upon conscience’ for our loved ones and comfort the souls of the victims in heaven!
