Exciting day for my son

Took my son fishing the last two days at a tiny pond that you can cast across. He caught a lot of bluegill and a bass so he was really excited. We also found a painted turtle. He caught 15 fish yesterday and 4 more today. I think he is going to want to go back to this pond every time we fish now. Lol.

Slowing the Niagara River to improve the ecosystem

US Army Corps of Engineers completed a project to help the Emerald Shiner.

TLDR: they created a series of baffles to slow the river instead of the vertical walls in the area now which prevented the passage of Emerald Shiner which is an important prey species for both fish and birds in the area.

Here is the article: Niagara River Fish Passage

Onondaga Lake ranks second in New York for bass fishing tournaments

Yes, even the state Department of Environmental Conservation was surprised by the news that Onondaga Lake has somehow become a bastion of bass fishing excellence.

DEC’s new Black Bass Fishing Tournament Permitting and Reporting System, which launched last year said Onondaga Lake hosted 48 bass tournaments in 2025. Only Lake Champlain, which is nearly 200 times bigger than Onondaga Lake in terms of volume, hosted more bass tournaments (72). Full story.

Hogy OG Swimmer Plug

Bought this for Striper and Pike, 7” 1.75 oz. First picture is what I got, second picture is the package it came in and what I was expected (except color), third picture is from the Hogy website. Have any of you used this lure? Anyone used a similar lure with no back treble or taken off the rear treble for easier catch and release?

Western NY, Genesee River

Google Lens (and my nephew) says it’s an alligator gar, I’ve been fishing here for 20 years and had never seen one. A search says they’ve never been naturally caught further north than Illinois. Are we crazy?

Free Fishing Weekend

Just an FYI: This weekend (June 27th and 28th) you do not need a fishing license in order to fish. You of course still have to follow the regulations. If you have any questions feel free to ask here or at r/FishingNY.

Updated Rules

“How much is this worth” posts are not allowed. The people who participated in the poll made it very clear (24 to 3) and I agree with them. This is listed under No Spam, I also updated the no AI to be more all encompassing.

Thank you for those who participated and as always if anyone has any suggestions, questions, or comments feel free to pass them on.

Poll: Allowing “How much is this worth” posts

I am leaning toward making a rule on “how much is this worth” posts being considered spam. We don’t have a lot of them yet, but they are prevalent on other fishing subs. Most of them I see are people who are just looking for a value to resell it and most of them don’t even fish. Let me know what you think.

Kayak cart wheels for back country trails

I am looking at a back country kayak cart for a sit in kayak. Looking at Diy because I have leftover pvc and extra straps and have seen a few designs that will work. Buying is not out of the question, yes I have checked marketplace. My questions is the wheels, specifically size and type. The cart is going to be used on hiking trails so uneven terrain with roots and rocks. This also means it needs to store preferably in or maybe on the back of the kayak. Wheel size I’m assuming 5” or more and wheel type I am leaning toward a soft rubber vs a hard plastic. What has your experience been using a dolly on unimproved trails?

Nets bad for Catch & Release?

In reading a fishing book about a local area it had a section about catch and release where it mentioned only to use a net when absolutely necessary. It stated that nets “tear mouths, rip gills, break fins and teeth, scratch eyes, and remove slime”… My understanding was that using a net for catch and release is beneficial as you can keep them in the water the majority of the time. So far I haven’t had any noticeable issues. Have any of you heard this or had any issues?
