Kolkata VFS

Hey guys,

I have an admit from TUM for the MSc Quantum Science and Technology. These guys were making it very late so I decided to proceed with my SBI Educational Loan Application with my LMU MSc Physics admit. I have spoken to the bank officials and the loan process is being amended according to the new university.

However, I am very scared that I will not get a VISA on time because now we are in the last 10 days of August. My classes start on October 12.

Let’s say that I apply by the 25th-26th of AUGUST on the CSP portal with no missing documents, do I have a realistic chance of getting a VISA on time?

I haven’t even booked flight tickets and the prices will skyrocket by the time I get my VISA. Everything is stressing me tf out right now.

Can everyone mention their status regarding their application? For those have received your VISA what is your timeline?

Guys please reply as IT WILL be helpful for others as well !

TUM vs LMU (need serious input)

Hey guys,

I am an Indian.

I currently have an admit from TUM MSc Engineering Physics and LMU MSc Physics. Although I am still waiting for the official admission letter from the international office department at LMU.

I have also applied to the MSc Quantum Science and Technology program at TUM. Unfortunately, TUM is taking their sweet time in releasing my result for this program and it's honestly annoying at this point. I am confident I will get into this program.

My interests lie in quantum many body physics, computing and algorithms. I am also looking at quantum error correction but that's very math heavy, but it is the most important aspect of a quantum computer.

I am also interested in statistical physics. I find it amazing how we can use it many other fields such as biophysics, soft matter physics, machine learning and condensed matter. I have seen many people from statistical physics going into quantitative finance as well (the stochastic calculus helps a lot here). I actually would want to work in finance down the line as the pay would be good and the work is really interesting. Overall, this field of physics is quite versatile in my opinion.

Additionally, LMU has this AI in physics specialisation as well which is crazy as it can be bundled with statistical physics courses. Munich has a lot of quantum startups but I do not know where quantum computing is heading in general, since there is a lot of hype in the field.

I am truly confused and I do not know what to choose. Let's say the TUM QST result comes on Monday or Tuesday, then I will have to make a choice. Otherwise LMU it is. TUM MSc Engineering Physics has a non - eu tuition fee of 6k euros per semester so thats out of the question.

I basically have this weekend and some serious external input would do me good. of course in the end I have to decide as it's my future lol.

International Office Letter

Hey guys,

How much time did the international office take to issue your admission letter, after your documents arrived? I did not apply by the July 15th deadline, but later received an email from the faculty of physics deeming me suitable for the MSc Physics program.

Since I have a confirmation from the faculty of physics, I can send my documents by 21st august (sent them on Saturday, they will arrive tomorrow most probably and are in the UK right now - DHL).

Guys PLEASE give me your input. I am stressed about the visa as well (indian).

(urgent) vfs kolkata timeline

Hey guys,

I am an INDIAN.

I have received an admit letter from the faculty of physics at LMU deeming me suitable for the MSc Physics program. However, the actual official admission letter is issued by the international office at LMU for which you have to physically send the documents by post (which I have done).

I stay in Calcutta for the past year so I will be applying for a visa at the VFS over here.

For all those who have received your GERMAN STUDENT VISA could you please just give me your timeline. I am a bit stressed and I need to understand what timeframe can I expect. This will help me plan things to a better extent.

External Advice in choosing the Program

Hey guys,

I am an Indian and recently I have received admits for the following MSc Programs in Germany.

  1. Leibniz University of Hannover: MSc Quantum Engineering
  2. RPTU Kaiserslautern: MSc Advanced Quantum Physics

I have also applied to TUM, for their MSc Quantum Science and Technology, and they will release the results by the end of this month. There is a very good chance I will be admitted.

I am highly confused what to take.

My research interests include: Quantum Many-Body Physics, Quantum Information, Computing and Algorithms. Even Quantum Error correction since it that is an area that requires a lot of research as well.

MSc QST: offers great exposure and excellent professors. Munich in general has a lot of opportunities with respect to quantum startups and research institutions such as MPQ. You can freely choose your flavour of courses, whether experimental or theoretical. It is very flexible. I think around 100 students enter this program every year.

Leibniz Uni Hannover: Another great institute, but this program requires some electrical courses to be taken (from which I would choose "Information theory" and "Quantum Devices"). They offer really great theoretical research groups, which work in my area of interest, although I am worried a pure MSc Physics degree would be better.

RPTU Kaiserslautern: The MSc Advanced Quantum Physics program is theoretical in nature, and I will be able to take courses in many-body physics, quantum field theory, quantum optics, quantum information, magnonics, advanced quantum theory and solid state theory. The research groups are also good here, but the city of Kaiserslautern is small and a bit isolated from what I have heard. Also the strength of students here is not a lot, and exams are mostly oral in nature.

In summary, TUM has everything but I feel there will be a lot of competition for student jobs and stuff. Munich is also expensive, but I feel it's still doable.

LUH on the other hand also has groups of my interests, but unfortunately I will have to take a few engineering courses. I have also applied for the MSc Physics program here, but no reply (they said mid-august).

RPTU on the other hand I feel is more chill and offers a less stressful enviroment. Since student strength is low hiwi jobs will be easier to get. But the city does not have many startups or so, except for DFKI and IWTM Fraunhofer which have some research in quantum computing (algorithms).

This is a long post but I need some opinion guys.

  2. Do you find student assistant jobs (hiwi)?
  3. What is the waiting time to get a student dormitory?
  4. How do you find the exams to be? Is there relative grading?

PhD Physics in Germany with a German MSc

Hey guys

I will be going to Germany for my MSc in Quantum science, to pursue my research interests in quantum computing and many-body physics. I have offered from RPTU Kaiserslautern, Leibniz University of Hannover, and Ulm University. I am currently awaiting a response from TUM as well.

I have been reading a lot of posts about the fact that it is very hard to get a phd in europe now, germany included for physics. Some of this data are from people on reddit itself, so I do not know what to really take from that. And some of these people are applying to these positions with non-europeans degrees as well. I would really like advice from some people who are doing their phd in physics, so that I have a realistic picture of what to expect and how to prepare.

Although nobody can predict the future, as an Indian I am trying to understand the German system better, and this post is part of that process.

Help - PhD Physics in the UK

Hey guys

I am Indian with a dual degree in physics and astronomy.

I plan to move to go to Germany for my MSc in Quantum Physics at RPTU - Kaiserslautern. In the future, I aim to do a theoretical physics (in the field of quantum computing) PhD in the UK and my target are the following universities: UCL, Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Manchester.

I want to understand the reality of admissions for the PhD physics program at these institutions. What are the faculty looking for and what really matters in your profile.

I have a slight fear that the university I will be going to doesn't have much international recognition, although there are very good physics research groups and are known in Germany. I have also applied to TUM for the MSc Quantum Science and Technology program, but have not received any response till now (probably by the end of this month).

I will be in competition with students who directly have their prior degree from these UK institutions, and I think they will majorly stand out because of course UK admission committees will know UK degrees and professors far better than Germany.

Also I did not perform my best in my undergraduate so will that be a factor as well?

Please give me the brutal reality guys. I want to be practically optimistic.

The thing is recently I have been reading a lot of about statistical physics and AI, and it feels like a more lucrative field of physics to specialise in down the line, as it has practical applications in drug discovery and biophysics.

Quantum computing on the other hand seems like a long shot after a lot of research. I have even gone through the r/QuantumComputing sub reddit, and almost 80 % of the opinions are based on the fact that it is a major hype, and we have almost zero useful algorithms currently. And even the ones that are kinda useful (optimisation) are not worth running on the hardware which is anyways very noisy.

My interests in this field are towards quantum algorithms, information theory and tensor networks for quantum many-body systems.

I want to do a PhD for sure, and broadly in theoretical and computational physics. However, I do not know which field to specialise in at this point.

Please give me your honest input on this topic. I am sure a lot of people need such clarifications.

Urgent help with Projects (Quantum Computing)

Hello guys

I will be starting my masters in Germany this winter. I have a prior degree in physics and astronomy, and now I am eager to enter the field of quantum science and technology.

My research interests include: quantum algorithms, computation and information along with tensor networks (for representing many-body systems)

I have decided that I am going to start building projects until October arrives for my own understanding and profile. I have a good theoretical knowledge of quantum information theory, but no practical experience, hence the goal.

Could you please give me any pointers regarding this? How can I start and what projects should I build? I am asking gemini pro as well, but some human input will be far better.

(How?) PhD Programs in the UK

I have applied to certain German MSc programs in quantum science and technology, and have received admits for the same. Some of these unis include Leibniz Uni Hanover, RPTU Kaiserslautern, and Ulm University.

Further down the line, I want to do a PhD at a good university and under a good advisor. I am pretty sure literally everyone has this desire, but I am still stating this explicitly. I was looking at the UK for PhD, at places such as UCL, Imperial and Oxford.

I have researched about these places and they have pretty good research in Quantum Tech, but it is difficult for international students because only 30 % of the seats are available to us. Even in that 30 % , you also have to get funding for your phd which is no joke.

Can you guys please tell me how do I really build a good profile for such universities. I know my potential and am quite clear about my interests as well. I just want to move forward with a solid plan and practical optimism.

My long term goal is to do go into research based roles in the industry, especially at companies such as google quantum AI and IBM.

PLEASE give me any input you can, if you think it would help me ! After all we are in this community to look out for each other !
