starter build?

i'm just starting my first FNV campaign, so i'm here asking: which build should i go for?

i'm fairly experienced with fallout 4 and fallout 3 before that, so it's fair to say i know the game, but still.

i'm used to sneaky sniper/melee builds, and I'd like to go for something different for a change.

also, i know in FO4 intellect and luck are the two main sources of exp, off of the balance of which i've usually based my builds in the past. how about in FNV? does it compare in some way?

thanks for the help in advance!!

DOD FX17 volume/wah/expression/CV??

what do you think of this discontinued pedal?

i didn't know of the existence of it, i just came across a good deal on one, and it seems to me like what i've always wanted any treadle pedal to be!

  • on the smaller side - i mostly mess with smaller boards, so big boy wahs and volume pedals are often prohibitive
  • RUGGED - built like a tank, and no pots moving! it's actually neither an optical thing nor a pot, instead it's a very weird "open" variable capacitor. far out. (also: stinks cause i've never heard of that before)
  • has both a wah and a volume function, plus an expression function AND active 0-5v CV control*!!
  • activated by the movement of the treadle - i'm not a fan of footswitch activated treadles.
  • i have a soft spot for old school DOD designs. this one looks RAW and old-tech. awesomely fits my aesthetics.

it is an active volume pedal. it is said to not have a vintage wah sound (doesn't even have an inductor), but more like a vintage morley.

*i dabble in vintage synths, so I'd really appreciate the CV control use, tbh... BUT does it handle classic expression pedal needs as well? I can't find much info around. i fear it doesn't, that would make it less ideal.

it's not a very popular pedal, so, does this mean it's also not a great pedal? am i just being blinded by this "love at first sight", and this thing actually isn't as cool as it seems to be? lol i'm head over heels for it.

stupid news: i spent the last three hours doing a BIG MUFF shoot-out and i ain't learnt shit

...like at all.

i was thinking "I'll just get a couple and then eliminate and sell a couple". nah. not that easy. (fuck :'0 )

i found i like each and every one of them for different applications and uses. ugh.

NPD being EHX TRIANGLE and to a lesser extent matcha cream (spent a couple of weeks with it)

the contenders being:

  • EHX triangle big muff (latest acquisition)
  • EHX green russian big muff
  • TONE CITY matcha cream (second last to arrive)
  • ENO BMP (oldest one, here representing NY bmp, i guess...)

external participants:

  • (stock) boss ds1
  • donner dark mouse (not in photo)

i only learnt that:

  • i LOVE ds1 boosting ANY big muff. like perfect match (that's the only clear winner for today). the two big muff filters do actually work very interesting when stacked.
  • a high gain rat is ALMOST like my favourite sounds i look for in a muff, but a muff just sounds bigger. will probably be running parallel BM and rat soon. or assemble a board without a rat (DARE I EVEN THINK THAT??!)

other than that? no clue what to do with all these muffs. should i keep on accumulating more? lol, shut up, i know the answer to that :P

off to the second round i guess ':/

best [SHOEGAZE] drives to go after reverb - REVERB>DRIVE ?

[related picture stolen from the net]

what are the best drives (in your opinion) to go after reverbs (ofc, delays count too) for shoegaze sounds?

i know there's plenty of specialized reverb/drive double pedals and such, but I'd like to put the emphasis on *classic*, basic circuits, and standalone drive pedals.

[edit: had swapped a "after" for a "before" here, sorry, my bad. changed it back as what it was intended] also, which is "better", after a reverb? OD, distortion or fuzz?

(i know, nothing is objective here, i would just like to know your opinion and experiences)

thanks for sharing!

ignorance: odd time signatures and counting - help?

hello there!

[self-introduction][i'm your run of the mill 32yo guitar player, self taught, been playing guitars for (shit) shy of 20 years, with ups and downs, with no musical "success" whatsoever. i can poop riffs and song parts i'm satisfied with, with very little effort, i'm very satisfied with my style and taste. i also dabble in analog synths and some bass guitar.

my own field of expertise is dissonant, post-punk, post-hardcore, post-metal, noise rock, psychedelic stuff.][/end self-introduction]

TL;DR : i can't count time divisions (while playing ) for the life of me, while i've always composed in odd time signatures (not a great combo, ik). of course this throws off many other musicians.

i'm not in the position rn to invest money at all, on further education, so "find a teacher" is not useful insight for me rn. i know that'd be the best option.

so, what should i do? do you have insights, techniques, recommendations, tricks, good resources, exercises you recommend, whatever, anything at all, i can do myself to better my understanding, knowledge, consciousness of rhythm, time signatures, counts?

so that i can play better with others and communicate with them better too

thank you for reading

electro smash site is down (!)

tried to reach it for my daily circuit analysis, but i get a blank page that reads "This Account has been suspended".

i'm (calmly) panicking a bit. do you know something about the situation? i really hope it's just a temporary thing.

NPD (tomsline black teeth) cheap rat clones comparison/appreciation

this is a cheap rat post.

following my latest exploit in cheap rat clones comparisons and listing i couldn't abstain from getting me a new one for measley 17 eur (comprised of shipping!)... it reached me in nearly new condition too!

as is fashion, i couldn't then proceed at a rat shootout, featuring my lekato looper, with

- donner dark mouse (my beloved)

- joyo splinter (modded, but only in footswitch function, don't worry)

- dolamo vintage distortion

- tomsline black teeth

the new one (tomsline) features a soft (er?) switch (which leaves me feeling it more flimsy) and volume and filter pots have a middle notch (appreciated, with these fiddly micro knobs). love the anti-stomp bar feature (a life saver on minis imo).

similitudes - DOLAMO = TOMSLINE

i was surprised to notice that it's the same as the dolamo! just in mini size, and with a little parts tolerance. the cracky growl is the same. they even sport the same mis-labeled 3 way toggle: solo/turbo/normal, where solo is actually turbo (led clipping) and turbo is solo (no clipping diodes), with a simple on/off/on toggle

donner and joyo are more similar, more overdrivey. but I'd hesitate as to say they're the same. they COULD be different revisions of the same circuit though (reasonable: joyo splinter is a fat rat rendition)

GAIN TEXTURE

that's a difference i noticed when comparing to a proco rat2... dolamo (and tomsline i can now add) are more similar in that sharp distortion-metalish crackle, while donner and joyo are a little bit more round and middy. donner a little bit middier. proco rat2 has both. the harshness and the middiness.

FILTER

at times i'm thinking this is just due to the filtering: tomsline and dolamo have definitely more brightness on tap in their filter (as proco rat2 does... even more IIRC) with joyo being the darker one - with it's filter on zero (brightest) i'm almost half (on dolamo and tomsline likewise) to keep up, and a decent cut on donner

WHO DOESN'T LIKE MIDS?

that's why for me my joyo loses, while my donner always felt a winner: one feels dull (especially with humbuckers), the other boasts even more mids. and who doesn't like mids?

tomsline and dolamo on the other hand have (a little bit) more of that rat gain crackle cutting texture, but are a little less middy than the donner. while proco rat2 felt as middy as the donner and as cutting as the other two.

TC magus pro sounds like the same slight lack of mids as dolamo and tomsline, FROM DEMOS(!). i guess some could say they sound more "modern"?

i love fucking rats.

help: LED not working troubleshooting?

hello this is my first full build, and first PCB build. got this pedalpcb carcass (dod carcosa) PCB kit from musikding.

it is messy in some places, but everything works, except:

- 1) LED, i'm still not figuring this out. i'm almost to the point of wiring one from scratch, ignoring the pcb placement. but I'd like to understand.

- 2) the pots are ALL mounted backwards (lol!) and i think i will make do with backward pots for now... until i really feel bothered by it. i don't feel like desoldering them and then resoldering them again.

the cable connections are very ugly, but there is no touching between them. i can't get a continuity reading between red cable from battery/power and red cable to footswitch (they should be connected, right?)

so. can you see what is going on? thanks for helping!

[other mishaps: i crushed one of the two (then neatly placed) clipping diodes while forcefully trying to fit the toggle switch on the the wrong face of the PCB (oops! lol again), so i had to get ahold of a new 1n34a and then i peoceeded to solder it in that indecent way]

NPD: donner giant metal (HM2 clone)

i'm very satisfied by this pedal. i paid 20 eur for it.

donner giant metal is a boss HM2 clone (same pedal as mooer blade, AFAIK) and only mini sized HM2 you can buy, except for the angry swede which is going for 160/170 eur rn.

tbh, i wasn't expecting to enjoy its sound SO much! i used to have a boss mt2, which i didn't like much. i loved its preamp/eq feature, tbf, but not the sound. so, this thing surprised me. it's VERY growly and focused. the mids control is plenty useful (as the original, i guess), but we lost the bass control; in turn we got a treble control toggle switch (not as useful to me)

I've been enjoying it through my big muff, and with clean blended in (thanks to my boss LS2), especially using my jazzmaster.

this is not a preamp pedal. this is a brutal, in your face, aggressive drive which stacks great with other drives

it's not the TYPICAL metal pedal you'd expect. it CAN do metal, but it's actually kind of fuzzy and noisy (not your usual "tight" metal) and dirty. it was famously used by david gilmour on solos.

this pedal is very powerful, i can't believe it costed so little. it deserved a permanent place on my main board... for now ;)

I'd strongly adive you ge one, if you're on the fence!

SOTB: my first unsaturated color-coded board

it just happened. just wired!

sonicake source comp>donner giant metal(HM2)>eno tc18(big muff)>donner dark mouse(rat)>tc spark>demonfx ravine*>GFI clockwork.

*fake keeley caverns clone, OF COURSE!

please ignore the cabling. honestly it was tidier when i was using daisy chain only. i only switched to a compact psu cause i figured I'd try some drives power starving (courtesy of Harley Benton PowerPlant ISO-3AC SAG) soon.

idrk how I'll manage to connect my amp cable to the back of that clockwork, but that's a future problem.

best pedals to stack with a BOSS HM2?

i recently got me a uber cheap HM2 CLONE (not in picture), which i'm LOVING. my favourite combo has been with my jazzmaster going into a big muff.

it goes without saying, that i'm not going for traditional metal sounds here.

so the query is: please throw here your favourite HM2 drive stacking combos/technique, or combos in general, even to the wackiest weird stuff!

which drives work great paired with a HM2?

I've cleaned some pots too much with contact cleaner. now what?

some feel just not lubricated enough (cheap, crappy mini pots) and don't move well, while others (more decent ones) just move too fast/easy for their application.

of course i was a bit too eager with contact cleaner (now i know :'), but ehat about contact lubricant? is there such a thing? I've never even heard about that. but i guess moving contact parts need lubrication too.

thanks for your help!

donner dark mouse is the best cheapest rat

this is a rat post.

this is a cheap rat clone post.

i have a joyo splinter, a donner dark mouse, a dolamo vintage distortion, and i've had a friend's proco rat 2 for a while. i think it's safe to say i know my rats.

HECK, dark mouse almost never left my board for any of the others. is it the middier eq profile? is it that it's crunchier, grainier overall? idrk, but it SMASHES the other two cheapos. its eq profile is SPOT ON the proco's, while the others' is flatter. that seems to be the case for TC magus pro too.

i'm not going to say it's "better than the original". but, boy, given its size, i do prefer it. it's *better* the the original at what it does... proco rat 2 just sounds good in every spot and setting, extremely adaptable. but i kind of prefer the dark mouse's slightly specific sound.

just don't get a splinter or a magus, when you can have the donner (same as mooer black secret as of what i know), unless you're averse to mini pedals, or want a fat rat (in that case: splinter). the donner sounds WAY better, AND way rattier.

and i'm not even considering the turbo rat mode here, which i'm in 90% of the time anyway.

end of communication

EDIT2: case closed - same old didn't check for the input jack inserted disconnecting ground all over :P will delete in a while EDIT3: turns out i won't be deleting post, it *could* turn out to be useful, i guess?

EDIT: ok, i've connected everything raw and everything works... the question remains: why can't i read any ground? what am i missing?

--------------------------------------------------------

i've been modding my joyo splinter and the mod works as intended.

except the pedal stopped working. i've noticed physical damage on the cheap cables' connections from motherboard to footswitch breakboard (due to too much moving it around) so i've disconnected it, and figured I'd just rewire a new 3pdt.

i've retraced everything, but, lo and behold, I can't find any ground (was looking for it to connect the on/off led, as it was).

TL;DR as of now i could only find continuity between battery clip's ground and PSU input ground and output jack.

input jack and wherever on the board, even where the (original) led's ground was connected, no dice. i'm baffled

what might have happened? am i missing something? something very obvious? :P

thanks for reading
