Huntington froze my account when I tried to transfer to my main bank, says I have to go to a branch in person to unfreeze

This is 100% bullshit and anti-customer. It isn't worth the checking offer or the 90 days my account has to stay open. The closest branch is 30 minutes away and only open from 9am to 4:30pm (what the fuck?) and not open on weekends. I've literally never had a bank freeze my account for transferring money out to an external verified account.

Wakefield Commons (Marquee Cinemas and Galaxy Fun Park) has been sold

I know this is technically in Raleigh but right on the edge and probably an area a lot of us go to. It sold in June for $33 million.

How to make daily scrum and retros valuable?

Ugh, daily scrums. They seem so pointless for Salesforce teams. They’re just people regurgitating their story status on the Jira board that we can all see. We’re all good at reaching out to whoever when we hit a blocker and need something decided. Everyone is working on their own little piece of the puzzle. And updates are never interesting because it’s “yeah, just working on the thing I’m supposed to be working on”.

Retros are even worse. No one speaks up about much. There is rarely anything that went wrong outside of “someone was on PTO so I couldn’t get answers so this will roll over” and little to discuss for improvements.

Our org has about 1,400 users. I’m on three different teams. Every scrum is basically the same set of status updates.

How are you making scrums more useful? What are you discussing in your retros? I’ve read quite a few articles on how to improve them, but a software team just runs differently than a Salesforce scrum full of admins, POs, PMs, and other random business people who shouldn’t be there but no one will kick out.

I spend 1-2 hours every day, if not more, in this meetings and they’re driving me nuts. Everyone is multitasking on other work because the meetings take too long and feel pointless.

Baseboards at top of stairs. Need help!

Cat tax included! I’ve also included a photo of the opposite side showing how it is currently trimmed before being replaced.

I’m trying to figure out how to make the transition coming the stairs. Using 5 1/2” flat trim for baseboards. Unsure if that will work coming up the stairs. Considering 3 1/2” or even 2 1/2” trim along the stairs. The profile got changed when we switched from carpet to hardwood, so it doesn’t line up quite as nicely now.

Figuring out trim at top of steps

We had the carpet replaced with engineered hardwood. I’m also replacing all of the trim. So far so good. But I’m not sure how to deal with the profile at the top of the stairs.

I’m using 5 1/2” trim for baseboards, but 3 1/2” running up the stairs. I could use 5 1/2”, but that makes an awkward cut, too. And it will make the opposite side difficult.

Tip for discount hotel stays for UNC/Duke hospitals

I was looking for a hotel reservation near UNC Chapel Hill while my wife is having surgery and staying at the hospital for a few days. One of the hotels I called to ask about hospital rates pointed me to medstay.com to get way better rates than you can normally get. It's a local service offered for UNC/Duke hospitals in the area. You just have to provide your doctor's info when submitting the reservation and then they make it with whatever hotel on your behalf like a travel agency.

Hope this helps others who need a hotel near an area hospital!

I don't have any affiliation with them beyond knowing about them for a few days and booking a hotel for a week with them.

Courage games question about seating

It looks like most of the seats don’t have backs and are more like bleacher seats. Can you take in a cushion or a folding stadium seat with a back? I don’t see it mentioned as allowed or not allowed on their website.

My sweet girl always stares at me

We had to say goodbye to Simmer last week after just 5.5 years together, but I’ll never forget her piercing green eyes and how she always found a spot in any room to watch me.

This picture is from less than a year after we adopted her during Covid. She immediately made herself the center of our family the day we brought her home. She was done with living the wild life and always kept an eye on us to make sure we didn’t leave her behind anywhere, even if it was just in a different room.

We had to say goodbye to our amazing Simmer last night

We adopted Simmer in November 2020 after “just going to look” during a free adoption event. She made it pretty clear from the moment she saw us in her kennel at the shelter that she was coming home with us.

We thought she was around 6 when we adopted her, but due to various medical issues over the years, our vets adjusted her age by 3-4 additional years. It wasn’t easy immediately knowing we lost years with her when we were told that.

For the last couple of weeks she’s been struggling to eat well. Meds have helped, but it was becoming more obvious that maybe she wasn’t doing great. Her last vet appointment just a few weeks ago gave her good marks, though. However, she did have a heart condition and high blood pressure, so we knew that she could go from good to not good pretty fast at any time.

We went to the beach for the weekend and our pet sitter said she was good for her all weekend and ate most of her food. But it turned out Simmer was just doing what she had to until she had us back home.

I grew up with cats but I don’t think I ever loved any of them as deeply as Simmer. We have two other cats and it’s the same with both of them. Simmer took up most of my capacity to love - she was truly my soul mate and we were a bonded pair. She always wanted to be with me and on my lap. If she was on the couch and I sat in the arm chair, she’d make her way over to me. If I sat on the couch with my laptop, she’d sit next to me and head butt my computer to move it out of her way. If I sat on the couch to eat pizza, she’d be as close as possible trying to steal it from me.

Simmer had progressive arthritis, so she didn’t come up stairs during the day to see me in my office as much as she used to and she didn’t want to play with feather toys anymore. Her goal was to sleep on anything soft as much as possible. But she still made her way up at least once a day to come see me if I hadn’t been downstairs in a while to pet her. She would still figure out how to get on our bed a couple mornings even though it was a struggle for her.

We got home on Monday and Simmer was back to not eating well. She ate her food overnight with the encouragement of meds in her system, but didn’t touch any food on Tuesday. Her breathing was also becoming labored, but not consistently. At 4:30 my wife texted me that she was concerned about it, so we called the vet and they were able to get us in right away. Minutes later in the car Simmer’s breathing became much more labored and she started panting and drooling heavily. The one stop sign and stop light between our house and the vet were the longest moments of my life.

Our vet was able to see her immediately, but it was already too late. Simmer was in heart failure. We could have tried taking her to the emergency vet where they have an oxygen cage and more advanced care, but our vet wasn’t even sure Simmer would survive the drive if we did that. X-rays showed her heart was surrounded by fluid and confirmed the heart failure fears.

We were taken to the back to see her and consider our options, but I had long ago promised Simmer that I wasn’t going to let her suffer when she was ready to go. I’ve never cried harder in my life while making that choice for her. Our vet let us spend as long as we wanted with her. When it was finally time, my wife and I held her on the table and told her how much we loved her and that we were sorry this was happening. I had my hands where I could feel her heart and her breathing until she was finally in no more pain.

I love our other two cats, but Simmer was incredibly special to me. She turned my wife into a cat person in less than ten minutes at the shelter the day we met her. She loved to snuggle and would happily lay on top of us or on our legs for hours.

I miss her so much and my heart hurts so much this morning. The first photo on this post is my last good photo of her from yesterday morning. She got to nap on the bed one last time. I only wish that I had worked on the couch some yesterday to spend a few more hours close to her.
