My APD is really depressing me

I’m 20 and I’ve had APD since I was about 14. It’s ruined so much for me.

I could barely maintain any friendships during all of high school because I’m so useless in any location just slightly too loud.

When I had a job in a store a few months ago, I couldn’t understand customers right in front of me. I could barely hear my coworkers right next to me. It’s dawned on me that basically every job is going to be like this- loud music, loud noises, loud people around you but never anything you can understand.

I almost cried at my college orientation because I couldn’t understand a single person, even when I put my ear directly towards them. Everyone around me talked to each other perfectly while I couldn’t hear my own thoughts.

It’ll be like this for the rest of my life. I don’t want college to be like high school, I don’t want to struggle and be useless at every job I work.

The noise is overwhelming and quickly makes me confused, it can often be physically painful.

People have recommended I wear ear plugs- I think it’s supposed to make it easier to understand people next to you when you’re in a loud place. They work well in places like concerts, but in regular locations, it just muffles all the noise around me.

I’m starting to think maybe it would be better that way, just muffling as much noise as possible to the point I’m almost deaf. At least then I won’t be overwhelmed by noise, I’d seriously rather learn sign language or always carry a notebook around or something to communicate at this point. Has anyone else tried this?

Am I giving enough of this food to my cat?

My cat is 10+ years old and female. I buy her Kirkland Signature Pate. I give her a quarter of it (like in the second pic) once in the morning and once at night, and she has separate dry food she can eat in the meantime if she’s hungry.
Is this enough or too much to feed her? Sometimes she wolfs it down, other times she barely touches it for hours. My dad thinks I’m giving her too much, he only gives her half of what I give. I think he doesn’t give her enough. What should I do?

How different is a 5 string bass from a 4 string?

I’ve never played anything with more than 4 strings. Is the neck wider than a regular double bass? Can you adjust to it easily if you’ve never played a 5 string before? Does it have any significant differences or pros/cons compared to a 4 string?

Choosing porn over antidepressants

TLDR; therapist recommends I take antidepressants, I’m reluctant to do it because they’ll kill my libido and I’m seriously questioning if it’s worth it because I don’t want to give up porn.

On the surface, I didn’t think I’m an addict. At most, I’ll watch porn once every day or every other day. I can go weeks without masturbating. It’s not a constant thought and I don’t choose it over other activities, I usually do it if I’m bored. During the pandemic, at my absolute worst, I could do it multiple times a day everyday. So I felt I was doing much better now in comparison.

But recently, due to unrelated issues in my personal life, my depression has become more significant. My therapist is recommending I take antidepressants. I tried one brand in the past, didn’t like it, and I remembered the side effects being annoying. Therapist is recommending a different brand this time. It might solve a lot of problems. But, like with most antidepressants, one of the side effects is basically killing your libido. I remembered this was the main side effect I hated on the previous medication.

There are other things I haven’t mentioned that wager into this, but not being able to masturbate really sucked. I haven’t told my therapist yet, but I’m genuinely considering whether antidepressants are worth it if it means losing interest in porn again. It’s not the only factor of course; antidepressants are a huge commitment and if you decide to stop, it’s an annoying process of waning off first before you’re finished. I already take other meds and don’t necessarily want to take more. But I’m starting to think antidepressants might really help me and I’m already thinking about how much I’ll miss porn. I didn’t realize how important it was to me until I thought about it like this. If antidepressants are what I really need, then I think I’ll go through with it, but it’s making me pretty upset. Maybe I’m more of an addict than I suspected. I don’t know anymore if this is a normal reaction to have.

I wrote a lot more than I thought I would lol, thanks for reading this far if you did.

Is this official art, or fan art? (SPOILER WARNING FOR END OF MANGA)

I found this pic on a Japanese website. It looks really similar to the official art but I don’t remember it from any of the books, is it official or just really good fanart? (If it’s fanart, does anyone know the artist?) Thank you

EDIT: Thanks to everyone that commented, I had no idea there was an alternate scene! I wonder if any other scenes were changed like this, I’ve only read the books physically. I’m not sure if I prefer this version or the final one, they’re both very depressing lol. I posted some low quality pics of how it goes in the final version in the comments, https://www.reddit.com/r/LandoftheLustrous/s/lNMZVSsBkL

Why is my houseplant suddenly attracting so many flies?????

I always put sticky bug traps in my plant (foxtail fern), it’s normal for it to attract a handful of flies. But suddenly, HUNDREDS of these flies appeared on the bug traps seemingly from nowhere. I’ve never seen this many before. Both sides of the trap were covered exactly like this. I let my plant dry out before every watering, the soil was totally dry. How did this happen????

Edit: thanks for all the replies/advice, I got a lot of great tips!! I’ll be more careful with my watering now😭😭

I’m not ready to have a college roommate

The college I’m planning on attending has a website where you can decide what kind of roommate you want. When filling out the profile, it asks questions like, “How tidy of a person are you?” “What time do you prefer to sleep?” “How often would you invite people over?” It also asks you to list your interests, hobbies, favorite shows and games, etc.

It’s making me upset because, if you asked me these questions maybe 7 or 8 years ago, I could’ve answered them all easily. But I don’t have an answer for most of them anymore because my depression has taken over my life. I used to love comics; haven’t read a single thing in years. Same with video games. Haven’t watched a single new show, barely any movies. Most of my time is spent sleeping or doing basically nothing.

Im terrible at staying tidy for very long, though it’s also difficult to stay tidy because I live in a hoarder house and everything is always everywhere.

I used to love talking with people and making new friends. I can’t even keep a conversation going now. I don’t have much to talk about anyway.

I already feel guilty because whoever gets matched with me is going to be miserable. I’m going to try my best to not get in their way. But trying my best with everyone for the past 6 years barely worked out. Highschool was so awful. I don’t want to do school again and make everyone uncomfortable everyday again. Aughhhhhhh I hate this so much.

Looking for a subreddit to post my design for a tattoo & get people’s opinions on whether it looks good or not

Every tattoo subreddit I’ve found only lets you post art of tattoos you’ve already gotten, or they’ll have weird rules about posting art ideas. I just want peoples opinions on whether the design I made looks good or not

What to do when you realize a piece you finished looks VERY similar to someone else’s art, and it looks like you copied them?

This happens to me all the time and I hate it. Sometimes I’ll finish an art piece, love it, then later on find another art piece that was made before me and is very similar/has similar elements to mine. So it looks like I deliberately copied them. Sometimes even other people will point it out to me, I’ll show them my art and they’ll say things like, “Oh, is this supposed to be a reference to this other thing that looks the same?”
Ahhh I hate it, it makes me feel like I wasted my time drawing something.

Sometimes I forget not everyone has wasted years of their life being depressed

Recently I was listening to someone talk about all the video games/movies/music they enjoy, and it kind of baffled me how much media they consume. The entire time they talked, I kept thinking, “Wow, it’s a big deal for me if I even listen to a couple of songs or watch a couple of YouTube videos in a day, how do you look at so much stuff with your time??” Then I realized; that’s what it’s like for someone that actually does things with their life.

I have lost years of my life doing and absorbing nothing, because that energy was used just trying to survive. It’s normal for me to go an entire year only listening to a few new songs I’ve never heard before, or only watching a few movies. I can’t remember the last time I watched an entire show or played a video game start to finish, while other people don’t think twice about incorporating all these things into their daily lives.

It made me realize I’d forgotten the part of my life where I could be like that, too. Being able to read hundreds of comics in a short span of time, while playing games, while watching movies and shows, and not thinking twice about it. Now it all just feels exhausting to me. I miss it.

Any upright bassists that have extensively played with electric upright basses?

I played upright bass for 10 years in school but haven’t played in a long time. I’m interested in getting an electric upright bass. I know electric instruments are usually at least a little different than their normal counterparts, but I really want an electric upright as similar as possible to a normal upright.

I tried an electric upright bass in the past (idk the model but it was made by Stagg). It was okay but it sounded kind of strange and the strings were very heavy. Granted though the bass was broken a little, so i don’t know if this is common in EUBs.

A lot of reviews I’ve seen for EUBs come from people that haven’t played a regular upright bass before, they say it in their reviews. Like one person said they didn’t like how it felt to play, but they also said they’ve never played a bass without frets before. So I don’t want to discredit any reviews people give, but I’d like to hear from upright bassists with experience both ways. Thank you

(USA) Is McDonalds a difficult place to work if you’re hearing impaired?

Exactly what the title says, I’m 19 and have no prior work experience and it’s difficult getting hired anywhere right now. I’m considering applying to McDonalds but I have terrible hearing (no hearing aids), people give conflicting answers about whether this would be a problem at McDonalds or not.

How common is it to get all wisdom teeth out at once?

(I live in the USA if that changes anything)

I got all 4 wisdom teeth taken out in one sitting when I was 18. I remember thinking this was a huge ordeal at the time cause it’d be painful and would take a long time to heal, but now I’ve heard other peoples experience of getting one tooth removed randomly every couple of years, and I kinda feel like I was lucky lol.

Was I lucky to get them all out at once, or is this becoming more common?

Genuinely what do people talk about in casual conversations?

Yeah I know it sounds weird. I was raised isolated for the first several years of my life, then the pandemic started when I was in middle school and it didn’t really ‘end’ until I was a senior. I have no idea what people talk about. I can’t think of anything to say beyond simple small talk.

Best beginner jobs for someone with bad hearing?

I’m 19 and I have Audio Processing Disorder. I just got hired to work at a local ice cream shop. I have no prior work experience (I just finished high school and couldn’t get a job during the pandemic), it took applying to 30+ places before I could get this job.

I was really hoping my hearing issues wouldn’t be a problem at work, but it’s terrible. Hearing customers orders is the most important part of the job, and I can barely hear anyone. The freezers are so loud that I can’t even hear my coworkers when they’re right next to me. I don’t want to give up, but I don’t want to make work more difficult for anyone, and I don’t want to just struggle talking to people every single day. But I think most beginner jobs are going to be similar to this.

Is there any kind of place I could work with basically no prior experience that wouldn’t be too difficult for my hearing? Thank you

So I just got hired at my first job. I’m so happy, I’ve applied to 30+ jobs over the past year to no avail. It’s a food retail place and the work is pretty simple, just take orders and give people food.

The only issue, though, is it’s really difficult with my hearing impairment. I have APD (auditory processing disorder)and have struggled with it for a few years now. It really ruined things for me in school, since trying to have conversations in public places was almost impossible. I really hoped it wouldn’t be an issue while working. Taking orders is the most important part of my job. But I can’t ignore it, even when people are right next to me it’s like they’re whispering.

I have to do everything I can to keep this job, it was so hard getting hired anywhere with the current job market. From the doctors I’ve talked to and the research I’ve looked at, there’s no cure for APD. I’ll be dealing with this for the rest of my life. If I can’t even manage a job like this, I don’t know what I’ll do going forward. I hate it so much but there’s nothing I can do.
