Morality of accidentally crippling a shoplifter

A shoplifter goes to steal something. Another customer stops them by lifting them up and throwing them down on the ground and inadvertently fracturing their spine, leaving the shoplifter in a wheelchair for life.

The shoplifter wouldn't have been crippled if they hadn't tried to commit a crime. The customer didn't mean to injure the shoplifter permanently. An appropriate punishment for shoplifting would be a fine, some physical pain, or internment.

How much blame is there to go around? How do you reckon with the consequences? Should any remedial action happen?

*NB - it's not a slur to use cripple as a verb. It is a slur to use it as a noun.

South Island Fish Restaurants

Does anyone have a hidden gem outside of Christchurch that is worth a drive to visit? I'm taking my dad on a trip and I remember he had this encyclopedic knowledge of fish restaurants up and down the coast of California. A great history, great staff, great owner, great wine list, etc. You would not have found them in the guidebooks, just from his own connections. I'd love to take him to some cool out of the way places like that. We are going to rent a car and have two weeks to explore the island. Thanks in advance.

Can't verify with my phone number

Does anybody have advice for me? I'm trying to add a second credit card and the verification text goes to a phone number I don't recognize. My Google ID and my bank have my correct phone number, yet somehow an old or incorrect phone number Is how Google wants to verify. I tried using the AI assistant for help and all of their advice led Me to Google having the correct phone numbers everywhere I could find them. There was no option to talk to a human. Am I screwed?
