J&R - any good?

J&R - any good?

So whilst my car passed its MOT with barely a mile on after a lengthy rebuild - the work started 6 years ago during COVID. One job I did was new CV joints and gaiters but annoyingly, the rubbers are already perished even sat motionless (albeit for 6 years!). No idea what parts I used but I hate doing gaiters, it’s so messy. Quick look for gaiters and noticed whole shafts aren’t silly money. Quicker turn around and less messy.

But these seem VERY cheap… anyone any experience with these units before I make a mistake. Also - I don’t see many options for sale - where would you source shafts / gaiters in the UK?

Thanks 😊

Brake squeal

Hey folks - recently recommissioned my 850 T5 and having annoying issues with brake squeal. Turns out I had a seized caliper at the rear so have replaced both and put in new pads and fitting kit (per the picture) and I think I’ve mainly solved the squeal from the rears but it does come back from time to time.
I seem to recall their used to be anti-squeal shims available that covered half the pad but I can’t find them for sale anywhere anymore!

I also have squealing from the fronts so all the slider pins are coming out this week for a refresh / replace to try and resolve that issue.

Anyone else chasing squeaky brakes??

What is it worth?

Just won this as ‘untested’. It’s automatic day date - keeps good time and is in ok condition (worn but not ruined). Dial looks perfect and wears nicely.

Question - what do you think such a thing is worth? I won’t say what I paid as I don’t want to lead the witness (and I got it as a two part of untested watches that both seem to work fine).

This feels like a really well spec’d and nicely designed little watch for an entry level price!

Where it all started…

It’s not properly vintage yet, but it’s a good 30 years old I expect - a Lorus n945 7a10 - the most complicated mecha-quartz movement I’ve ever seen. It has a chrono function with 1/10th sub-dial, alarm function, date on a third hand, no second hand so it doesn’t ‘tick’ making it silent, and the last two sub dials give 24H and dual time functions.

Of year, and it’s stunning!

My first interest watch that wasn’t a cheap daily quartz and bred an interest in watches more generally… I have about 50 watches of really varying types and styles now 🤦‍♂️

Off the road since 2018

This is my Volvo 850 T5… but sadly it’s been off the road since 2018, awaiting a new gearbox. Slowly over time I converted it to a manual and it’s been in a shop having some final repairs as and when they had time. After 8 years, I received word today that she passed her MOT with just one advisory! Tomorrow I get her back, and I cannot tell you folks how bloody ecstatic I am!

I’ve had this car for decades, I saved her from being scrapped when her previous owned passed away and it was left to go green. I’ve driven across Europe, I’ve driven Silverstone, and I’ve moved everything I own at one point, with this car!

That is all really - just wanted to share how happy I am to have N721OFP back, I car I truly adore! 😊 bring on the noise of 5-cylinders back in my life.

Wanna see Le Mans cars… go to Goodwood!

It’s impossible to get near to your automotive hero’s at Le Mans itself… at Goodwood “sure yeah, come have a look, we’ll open it up, take the clip off and have a good look just don’t get in…!” The access here is nuts!

IDEC.SPORT car pictures

Hey team,

Does anyone have any good photo of the IDEC.SPORT LMP2 car (28) they would share?

I tried and always failed to get a good shot on track (snapped about everything else on the circuit somehow!)

I’d like to make a frame with the Omologato Tifosi watch watch that was part of the sponsorship package and matches the livery and would love to have a great photo for the frame - will happily pay for the rights to print the image of course!

What have people got? ☺️

Meet Frankenstein! Need some help understanding this mongrel

Hey folks - meet my beloved 1986 LandRover 90 v8.

Originally a v8, this has had an ‘interesting life’. It spent time being used for rock crawling until the owner blew up the engine about 20 years ago. Next owner used the shell and dropped in a replacement engine from his then rotten first gen Range Rover v8… AND the gearbox (the AUTO box 🤦‍♂️ although I’ve come to like this set up) / transfer case (not entirely sure about axels but what ever it’s got it’s flat out at 60 🤣).

So this is a really pick and mix. It ‘did’ have the EFI system installed too when I got my hands on it a few years ago for the farm but it ran like shit so I had it returned to twin SUs with the period ‘telephone handle’ runners and plenum and it purrs along now.

But… I have some diff lock questions. Inside I have 2 pedals, a Hi/Lo selector and Auto Shifter from the Range Rover with some ‘interesting’ brackets. But nothing to lock any diffs.

Firstly I presume the first gen RRs had some way of locking the diffs? If so - what was the mechanism? Was it vacuum with a switch or was there a lever or similar I can get a control for? (Presuming it’s all way too early for an electronic system).

Additionally, does anyone know if the torque converters are easily sourced / refreshed. It appears to be slipping more and more so I think it’s toast… or is that a autobox rebuild (as the box still shifts nicely so I’m inclined to leave well alone!)

Sorry for the essay! Just about sold the car that’s taking up my garage space so want to get this in over summer / autumn so I can play with it more in the winter 🤣

T-5R Restoration Project is a go

I hope I’m ok posting YouTube links but my beloved Volvo 850 has been tucked away out of the limelight for a long time (nearly 10 years which is shameful!) and it’s finally off for some well needed TLC - this is the first in a series of videos I’ve done to capture that journey! I hope you all enjoy!

Sweet 325 spotted in Toronto

Little more to add other than this was LOVELY! 💪

Stumbled across this LIP Baschmakoff(?)

Looking around a jewellery / ornament shop in Toronto whilst browsing and almost overlooked it. The fashion watches it was amongst were tagged at CAN$3-400.

Have you ever seen one of these before? What do you think they were asking for this weird little French watch?

Would you buy it?

Really struggling with views

I’d like to think my content is pretty well edited (better than a lot of stuff with loads more views), ok thumbnails and titles and still views are horrendous - I have some content that randomly does ok (albeit more HOW TO type content).

Will someone watch some of my videos and tell me what’s wrong - be brutally honest.

I’ve been doing this for a few years now mainly as a hobby to help motivate me to get car jobs done but it would be nice if it made some money for all the efforts 😔

Tourist question about the CN line through Calgary

We’ve been up the Calgary tower (very cool btw locals!) and noticed they have moved the 4-line track to the east of the tower before it crosses the Elbow River. In doing so they have taken a straight line and added a kink which seems super sub-optimum for a goods line (image 1) from a straight line (as it still appears on Google maps image 2)

Being nerds, we’re keen to understand why this has been done. Is it a temporary solution? Looks like some development work is ongoing in that part of town but seems a lot of effort to move a track like this.

Can anyone answer this question to settle a debate?

Thanks - a nerdy British tourist

Golby Coastal Automatic Diver

Bought on a whim because I adore the colour way (it has an orange silicon strap too) and I really like wearing this out and about. This week I’ve been in Vancouver and it’s been pride of place on my wrist, even whilst out watch shopping!
Here you see a lighthouse whilst out whale watching to match the lighthouse shaped hands!

Great british independent micro brand making very high quality watch with nice Miyota movements 🥰

Just wanted to share this vibrant little piece with you all! 🧡

Vintage watch shopping Vancouver

Hey folks! I am out in Canada for a few weeks, in Vancouver for a week to start with. Always like vintage watch browsing / shopping. Any locals got any recommendations?

Not wearing anything vintage today, but enjoy my Briths Microbrand Gilby Coastal automatic diver 🧡

My chic Alessi had stopped and I found this Braun watch needing a battery for a hefty £23 on eBay… two new batteries arrived today and both are keeping good time again!

I love the simplicity of the Alessi and raw functionality (whilst stuff being metal and weighty) of the Braun.
Both affordable, both very cool (I think at least) and both back up and running for just a few pounds!

Fun fact: the Alessi watch features in the Nation Design Museum in London (albeit with a red leather strap).

Ok, so it’s not on quite on my wrist yet, as it’s arrived needing a battery (the seller was very clear about this) but feast your eyes on this elegant piece of design. A powerhouse of Bauhaus, Braun made this lovely time piece back in the 90s and I think it’s aged really well. Celebrating simplicity of form, nothing present that doesn’t have a function, and I think that makes it a timeless timepiece.
It cost me… wait for it…

£25.72 including postage.

Can you get more cool for that little cash aside maybe a Casio?
