Those old enough to recall - what is your take on Cristiano Junior's death?

I didn't watch the match but saw the video in news the next day and also clearly recall the photo in newspapers with him laying on his back with hollow, lifeless eyes.

I was 9 at the time but recall hearing both Kolkata giants had fallen way behind Dempo. By the time I started following club football (2007-08) Subrata Paul was already a star player. Was he taunted or abused by rival fans in the immediate aftermath of his club comeback after the incident? He was given a suspension for 3 months.

From the video it was clear Paul was nowhere close to winning the ball. Later they said the death was due to cardiac arrest and not necessarily due only to the collision, not sure how plausible that is.

How strong was Paul's goodwill in the footballing fraternity? YouTube doesn't host any videos of the incident now from what I checked (understandable), although I recall watching Miklos Feher's final moments on the pitch before his death while playing for Benfica in Jan 2004.

Did any of you go the match? How long did they delay medical attention? Curious to know your views. Peace.

Can anyone share dine-in reviews for Bombay Door restaurant located near Majiwada?

Found it in my Dineout recommendations today while searching for restaurants to visit but only one YouTube video came up, that too likely paid influencer marketing. Has anyone been here recently? What all did you order, like and more importantly didn't like? Thanks for your inputs.

Has anyone here interacted with noted late football journalist Novy Kapadia?

I randomly recalled him from the Sony Sports Network pre and post match show panel from the 2018 World Cup, only to realise he passed away in 2021 after what seems like a torturous last few years debilitated by illness and struggle to receive pension.

Not many memories of course except his voice and that he mentioned Platini's performances in 1986 in one segment. He covered 9 World Cups for various organisations and was also on the faculty of Delhi University's SGTB Khalsa College.

How popular was Goan defender Roberto Fernandes in his playing days?

Aside from Chhetri's single US Open cup appearance for KC Wizards, he's the only Indian post war era footballer to have played in the top flight of a competitive league in the Western hemisphere. I think Romeo Fernandes only played state league in Brazil for Athletico Paranaense due to some issues, not in Brasileirao Serie A.

Wikipedia doesn't list appearance count at either of Roberto's Mexican league employers Atletico Morelia or Monterrey. The Mexican league wasn't comparable to the European top 4 leagues.

But for instance , 1994 WC winner and Brazil legend Bebeto played briefly for Toros Neza in 1999 (shortly after Roberto Fernandes returned to India from Mexico). Sure, Bebeto was already 35 but he kept playing albeit very little for another 2-3 years.

In fact some years ago it was ranked 10th among leagues worldwide (don't recall the source) but this was when France striker Andre Pierre Gignac was the league's star player.

So was Roberto Fernandes indeed the Indian player with the highest upper ceiling of his era but isn't widely known due to being a defender? Or because he played just 29 times for the national team?

He led Salgaocar to NFL in 1999 and Federation Cup in 1997, beating East Bengal after Bhutia's breakthrough hattrick in the semifinal.

Also won the 1997 and 1999 SAFF Championship. Curious to know the views of those who watched him play.

How was Bhutia's transfer to Malaysia hyped back then?

Most are familiar that he was the first Indian player in the top 4 English leagues. However, he later had 2 very brief spells in Malaysian football with now extinct Perak FC and Selangor Land MK.

Perak was actually one of the strongest Malaysian clubs of that era winning back to back league titles in 2002-03 and I recall watching highlights of some match vs Kedah (another top Malaysian club) on one of the lesser watched Indian sports channels of yore sometime in the late noughties (probably Zee Sports or DD Sports, not sure).

He described himself as culpable for missing sitters in some Malaysian Cup semi-finals ending in defeat. There's obviously not too many matches to judge from. Did he have the ability to succeed in stronger leagues if you watched him regularly once he returned to the i-League for good? I caught the very tail end of his career personally.

But what was the hype like? Was the Malaysian league considerably better back then and it was considered a major step up for him? I recall first learning his name as a 6 year old from a classmate and he was already the India skipper (this was 2002).

What all to order while passing through Surat by train?

I was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai yesterday and decided to order dinner from Zomato at Surat station since I dislike travelling heavy or eating train pantry food. And I knew Surat will have plenty of options that aren't oil or spice laden.

Ordered Idada and Sev Khamani from some eatery called Jay Jalaram or something which was showing in app recommendations and loved both. 250 gm portion of each along with ancillary charges cost me a total of Rs 110.

Such stuff in Mumbai is way dearer. So do share what else to order from popular eateries located close to Surat railway station for future journeys. I have no business or family in Surat so I doubt I'm visiting anytime soon but I travel through plenty on this route.

Mostly seeking recommendations of stuff that's not widely available in Mumbai (where I live) and is mostly available only in Surat/Gujarat. Thanks for anything.

How are the restaurants in Pride Plaza - Sizzling BBQ and Cafe Treat?

Planning to go for dinner somewhere close and found this place. Never been previously, not a local. Is it crowded or difficult to get a seat at? What about taste and service if you've been recently?

I also saw Umami by Curries while driving past last night and it's a similar distance away. Never heard of it before. Mostly it was the name that stuck but reviews seemed good.

Both Umami and Pride Plaza are 15-20 minutes away for me. Do inform if you know of any other North Indian family dining restaurant in that area, need not be very fancy just taste matters. I mean other than those at the malls.

No diet preference as such. Veg non veg anything goes but looking to avoid places serving pork/buff dishes as family are a bit touchy about that (I'm not, have tasted bacon).

Bhooth (2003) directed by Ram Gopal Varma was the first movie that scared me as a kid - which was yours?

Recently found it in the Jiohotstar catalogue and watching it as I type this. I was maybe 7-8 when it released and watched it at a family friend's home.

Think I watched only a bit then and re-watched later at my Uncle's home with cousins. There was a power outage while it was airing (late evening/night) and everyone shrieked and sprinted out of the room. I was the only boy and had cousins 8 and 2.5 years older and 1 year younger. Everyone literally bolted as soon as power went out.

Had watched Terminator 2 : Judgment Day before that and also Terminator 3 : Rise of the Machines but don't recall being scared at all despite being a wuss as a kid. Had grown completely unfazed by the paranormal or horror movies by adulthood.

Watching it, the film seems solid for its time. Short run time for Indian commercial films of that era. Taut script, appropriate cheesiness in just the right amount.

Curious to know your picks.

Have you ever known anyone or yourself dealt with squatters?

I recently watched the Squatters docuseries on Disney and each episode is horrific. I never knew squatters were such a nuisance and that laws prohibiting squatting were so lax. Curious to know if you've had encountered any and what came of it.

Are deep discounts on Pune eateries like English House, Viman Nagar legit?

I'm not a Punekar although based close by enough. This place curiously ended up in Swiggy Dineout recommendations recently so I was going through Zomato dining reviews to get a pulse on customer sentiment.

They're rated 4.5 on Zomato and yet there's multiple reviews less than a month old stating disagreements over being allowed to pay via Zomato etc with bouncers being summoned on occasion while all the others are effusive in praise so I have a suspicion a lot of reviews are by management themselves.

Surprisingly, this place is also mentioned in old restaurant recommendation threads here by Redditors. What is happening?

65% discount via Dineout app payment + free shot? Imagine someone also has HDFC Swiggy credit card to boot. Granted the prices listed on the online menu aren't exactly neighbourhood small restaurant-esque. What is happening?

How well known to modern Bangladeshi football fans is late Monem Munna?

How well known to modern Bangladeshi football fans is legendary defender Monem Munna?

I randomly recalled reading a newspaper tribute to late Monem Munna in an English daily sometime during 2007-2010 when I was visiting my hometown in West Bengal. It was likely one of the English dailies distributed in Bengal.

It spoke at great length about his achievements at East Bengal winning multiple Calcutta Football League titles and prior to that in Bangladeshi football where he was once the most expensive transfer ever for domestic giants Abahani and won multiple league and cup titles. He was also a part of Bangladesh's first ever international trophy winning squad in 1995 Burma tournament.

The article was very elaborate, even touching on his numerous health struggles and untimely demise. Apparently die hard Bangladeshi football fans still regard him as one their history's 3 greatest ever players. There is apparently an address in Bangladesh named in his honour.

The size of the newspaper tribute in an Indian daily struck me as to what his stature may have been among Indian and Bangladeshi football community in his prime.

I mean, staying on in public memory or at least journalist memory years after passing and as a centre back playing in pre internet era is not very common. He also retired rather young probably before he turned 30. I just found a link in Bengali feting him as being adored more abroad than in Bangladesh.

So any of you who are familiar with him or followed some part of his career - do share your memories or views on what made him such a legendary player.

I have not been able to find any YouTube skills compilations for him. Thank you for anything.

Has anyone felt the flyover shake violently at Waghbil Naka?

I'm in traffic (not driving myself) as I type this. I can see the entrance to Dalal Engineering's premises and Suraj Water Park signboard from my window.

The flyover is shaking so violently. There are multiple heavy lorries chock full in this traffic snarl. Scary beyond words can describe.

Has anyone felt the structure vibrate so much in this stretch?

Gift ideas for a child naming ceremony?

It's at 11 AM tomorrow we're two invitees. It is actually my first time attending this kind of ceremony as an adult. Customs are a bit different in my community (friend who's the parent is Maharashtrian, I'm not). In my community the child is fed solid food like rice etc by their maternal uncle or similar relation after turning 6 months old.

I had gifted ₹1500 Amazon gift card about three months ago when the child was born. Imo cash or gift cards are the best since parents are at liberty to decide what to get but is repeating the gift type acceptable? Thank you for any inputs.

Decent treat for the price.

For someone who doesn't care much for chocolate, this is one of the better chocolate based treats I've had recently. Of course it's a once in a while treat very sugar, fat and cholesterol laden but then it's just 20 gm.

Amul's Tru range is a new favourite.

Ordered the Tropical Pineapple last night and it tasted heavenly. As someone who disliked the mouthfeel of Amul ice creams the last 2 times I had it (don't recall flavours but not of the fruit pulp based Tru range) I was praying this turns out good as there are only so many units per Instamart store and pineapple is one of my favourite flavours.

I don't care much for chocolate and dry fruit based flavours so Amul Tru is pretty much what I intend to have for the summer. They also have Tender Coconut, Santra, Strawberry Crush (had originally planned to order this but Mom dislikes strawberry for some reason) and maybe 1-2 others that beat me. Let me know which flavour you've liked best.

How many of you have survived tornadoes and what was your experience like?

Where did said tornadoes occur? What property damage did you incur and how long did it take to get back on your feet? Are tornado survival skills taught in your schools, especially those living in areas with multiple past occurrences of tornadoes?

How many international matches have you attended as a spectator and which was your most memorable experience?

I've only attended a single match. New Zealand vs South Africa in Pune during the 2023 World Cup. It ended in a 190 run win for South Africa. It had 2 centuries by de Kock (114) and van der Dussen (133) and 2 half centuries by Miller (53) and Glenn Phillips (60). The stadium is very poorly designed in my opinion with hardly 20% seats under the roof (mine was under the roof).

Actually the stadium experience was driven by the crowd banter. Since South Africa basically trampled over New Zealand with bat, ball and in the field. Listing some of the most memorable quotes/chants-

  1. Come on Dick Cock - you have to play!

  2. Come on Dick Cock - you have to win!

  3. Dickoo Dada!

  4. Dick Cock Samosa! (Samosa vendor had just walked by)

  5. Tem BAHH! Bavu MAHH! Tem BAHH! Bavu MAHH!

What kind of oil do you use for omelettes?

Yesterday I asked my mother what she'd put in my omelette. Just the usual apparently chopped onion, green chilli and salt. No spice, when I probed further.

I asked what kind of oil - she said it's "refined oil, the usual". I've loved eggs all my life but hadn't eaten one so perfectly seasoned, crisped at the edges with an almost faint char. This was a single egg desi omelette - as I rarely have double egg omelettes (weak gut).

Suddenly I asked what they'd taste like fried in mustard oil. She said before refined oil was widely available, they'd prepare omelettes in mustard oil itself. Have you ever prepared desi no frills omelettes in mustard oil? What kind do you use mostly?
